Trivia Time: Who was the last Padre to get an MVP vote?

My guesses would be Peavy or AGon. I doubt anyone got a vote in 2010.

I had no idea this had happened.

I suppose Franmil was made aware?

Sad. I am surprised that the media was not reporting this when it happened ... and making it major talking point.

I guess good for the family to keep a tragedy such as this out of the media.

Heard a couple of bits of speculation (not rumor):

1. not a surprise but Padres - Toronto deal for Stroman is inactive, no traction

2. surprising is that the Padres may be players for FA catcher Martin Maldonado (32, gold glove defense, sub-par bat) ... MLBTradeRumors has him signing $8MM/2 years but this late probably less. The "logic" is trading Hedges for ????. Maybe Hedges is just a piece of a bigger deal rather than a one for one. Money would be close since Hedges is in arbitration money. Padres would have to be betting in the longer term on Mejia / Allen or Hedges.

Interesting balancing the arguable better defense in Maldonado (but less offense) vs. the impact of the return for Hedges. Hedges still has 4 years of control. Maybe if the Padres can score an offensive minded, low cost, long control 3B for Hedges ... makes sense. Maybe Hedges goes in a Realmuto package ... Maldonado becomes the back-up ... Mejia back to AAA (or also dealt if there is a Realmuton extension).

So many ways to go here.

Ding!  Ding!  Ding!  We have a winner!

In 2012, Chase lead the NL in RBIs ... ah, the good ol' days!

I'm looking forward to a few Padres getting MVP votes over the next 5-10 years 🙂  (but maybe not 2019, I s'pose)

With the possibility of the DH showing up in the NL as soon as this season, Harper becomes even more reasonable in SD. Imagine the following line up.

1. Margot/Jank

2. Urias

3. Harper

4. Reyes

5. Moose

6. Myers

7. Hosmer

8. Tatis

9. Hedges

Yes please

So the Giants have met with Harper.

I wondered why they hadn't.

With their current outfield....age of their club and in a quasi rebuild.....it makes way too much sense for them to sign Harper than most anybody.

Which means it will probably happen.........again, because Padres.

My guess is that SF (and another couple of teams) did not want to get involved at contract levels greater than the 10 years / $300MM that he reportedly turned down for WASH ... waste of their time.

BUT time has passed and Harper is not signed ... some thought that WASH's offer is no longer on the table (given their other signings and a potential mega deal coming for Rendon) ... speculation that a shorter and / or lower cost deal maybe be in play ... that combo gets the sideline players into the game as "interested".

=========

Saw a piece on the 8 position players who have signed contracts greater than $200MM ... so far the signing teams have only scored 1 World Series Championship (think that was NYY and Rodriguez). So IF the thesis is that a team needs to sign players to mega contracts to win the World Series ... history is not on their side. Seems to be a combination of injuries and the signing teams' inability to build around the super star. Something to consider.

How much is it worth the be good (better) but still not win it all?
