I find the Moustakas saga interesting. Given this fate last winter when he ended up back in KC on a one year / minimal deal because there just was not a major market for 3B of his skill level (and carrying draft pick compensation) ... not sure I see anything different this year (except SD) and Moustakas is NOT Machado. The two candidates for Machado (PHIL / CWS) are seeking that super star presence ... does not mean they will even fall back to Moose AND pay him a long term deal ... more a repeat of last winter. Consider in 2018:

Moose: WAR 2.4 .... wRC+ 105 ... dWAR 1.0 (basically an "average" ML 3B)

Franco (PHIL): 1.2 (not a full season) .... 105 .... -3.4 .... (PHIL needs to spend its money on OF and pitching over the marginal upgrade Moose would give over Franco)

Sanchez (CWS): 1.7 ... 87 ... 5.3 ... (non-contender so no reason to add Moose over Sanchez)

Shaw (MILW): 3.6 ... 119 ... 2.5 ... (Shaw returns to his natural and better position, MILW has alternatives at 2B and also is better served by spending on pitching)

Not sure how Boras sees a multi-year deal from any of these options. Enter SD

PTNL (SD): --- .... --- ... --- .... (just maybe an opening for a 3B ... now and for a few year)

Maybe SD has a deal sitting just waiting for Boras to accept at some point but the logic / match is just too compelling. Adding an "average" 3B for a couple of years (when you have nothing) is a major upgrade to the line-up ... and Moose will only be 30 for 2019 (not an old guy and did play a full slate in 2018).

MLBTradeRumors had Moose signing for $16MM/2 years ($8MM AAV) ... not sure he will get that from anyone but the Padres and I would even sweeten the pot a bit ($10MM per year) to get a club option(s) for 2021-22. No clear cut 3B coming up the system in the next 4 years, Potts is still a "maybe" in 3 or 4.

If they want to contend, they really need to lock down some positions and eliminate the "black holes" where there is no ML quality. Get that critical level of stability and then focus on fewer positions for upgrading.

(keep in mind that inflation and escalating salaries will make $45MM at the end seem a lot less in today's dollars).

I understand the concept that this statement is based upon ... but, for example, Pujols' salary doesn't "seem a lot less in today's dollars" ... and I think that's a significant factor in how/why the Angels are not a contender!

Padres are poised to win with depth ... the biggest mistake so far has been the big/long contracts for Myers and Hosmer ...

Since I am on record of not wanting to sign any player to a contract greater than 5 years ... I agree.

Trying to strategize what Padre ownership may do if they really want to sign Harper. Don't see the short term (e.g. 4 years) super high AAV working for the Padres since 2019-20 even with Harper will not be championship quality plus the super high AAV would eliminate adding much additional support.

They would really want him starting in 2021 (when critical mass of prospects are up and producing) and spanning maybe the 5-6 years when the prospects are in full blossom (and still cheap). Sort of puts the sweet spot about an 8 year deal (and in this market that may be more than PHIL / CWS offer). If that is the ownership view, and considering Harper's age, that could work with Harper only in his very early 30s at contract end (unlike Pujols who signed his long term deal in his early 30s ... very bad deal for the LAA).

So the latest "rumor" I've been seeing is that Harper will be announcing his decision via the new MLB The Show video game trailer that comes out tomorrow which will show him in his new Teams jersey.

If true then it probably isn't a good sign for the Padres as I would assume it was filmed before our meeting with him.

Pure speculation on my part and pure rumor as far as the actual video revealing the "winner".

Not necessarily. That sort of thing could easily be filmed and edited in a matter of days.

Also, fwiw, the developers that makes MLB The Show? Sony's San Diego Studio.

Well he will announce his signing via SONY (guess that was part of his deal with them) but the trailer coming out now, as I have heard, has him in nondescript "sweats". When "the Show" releases on March 26th he will be adorned with his new team's colors (if he is signed). Probably a "special" event will be held at the point of signing. The probably have programmed him in every team's colors and just have to switch.

Yes, the SONY headquarters for this product is in San Diego. (maybe they can kick in some of SONY's money to help out the Padres)

Harper did stir up some discussion with his one word tweet this weekend ... "Loading". Obscure to we old guys but one "interpretation" is based on computer games where the "player" waits until all the pieces of the game are downloaded before he can play. Sometime a painfully slow process.

There are other "interpretations", so you guess.

There is a photo of the game box with him in sweats.....but the rumor is tomorrow’s trailer will have him in his new uniform.

FWIW.

For the record, I don't think that tomorrow's trailer will be an announcement. I think the likeliest explanation for his "Loading..." tweet is that Bryce is doing his part to help stir up interest in a game with a cover that will feature his own face.

lol this is quite possibly the most clinical explanation for a loading screen that I've ever seen. Props!
