If Harper does sign... doesn't the obvious trade become 2 MLB OF (1 being Myers, Pads eat a little future $) plus ?? for Kluber...

Obvious payroll pressure, but might be able to mitigate it depending who goes out?   Something has to happen at some point here....

My guess is the Indians don’t feel our  outfielders are good enough to warrant a true #1 starter.

Its a shame(for us) that the Indians are shoe-ins to win their Division.

Otherwise they would want prospects and not major league pieces.

”Those” we have!

Since Preller has been seeking takers for any of the "excess" corner OF ... apparently has found interest BUT not at his asking price which probably focused on ML or near ML talent. Not going to get any ML or near term ML quality for any of Myers - Renfroe -Reyes - Cordero who are all good enough to want but not want a lot.

So, IF they add Harper making arguable 3 of the corner OF redundant, he may choose to change his tact on the returns. (think all have minor league options, so there is that). Also, keep in mind that the 40 man roster squeeze gets more difficult next winter.

Could (should) Preller move to his strength and start dealing this "excess"  for deep minor leaguers with high upside (e.g. worked with Tatis, E.Ruiz, Paddack, Naylor, etc.). Do that and teams that "need" corner OF suddenly become more feasible ... e.g. Cleveland, SF, others.

Now with some wishful thinking, IF the Padres signed Harper, PHIL still needs OF upgrade ... PHIL still has crazy money to spend even if they sign Machado .... Padres might be able to send Myers and his contract to PHIL for a quality prospect ... Padres alleviate an OF crowd and payroll issue starting in 2020 while PHIL fills an immediate need to contend with a player with name recognition and All-Star credentials to keep their fans at bay.

Not sure I really care which OF survives (all have their pluses and minuses) and the return is most important ... so a bit of a buyers' choice. CF goes Margot / Jankowski (for defense first) and RF goes Harper.

IF they don't sign Harper .. still may want to move one or two of Myers, Renfroe, Reyes, or Cordero using the same strategy of getting prospects, clearing roster space, while give the others some legit ML playing time. Also, Naylor is lurking in AAA with all his pluses and minuses.

I agree.  Even 2 of them.  But I didn't really like the idea of trading 2 OF from our current 6 "MLB" guys in earlier trade proposals b/c we'd be too thin/unproven in OF then.  Obviously Harper solves that.

Too much speculation, but IF ended up winning a trade for JTR involving Mejia, now we have Hedges + 2 OF + ??

Hedges, Myers, Margot, Stammen, maybe another young RP like Wingenter and a top 100 prospect/s for Kluber?   2 MM + 2MM+ + 3MM out lowers cost for Kluber significantly this year, acutally save $ in future years.  Key is getting Cleve to take Myers.  He is vastly better than anyone in their OF, but Pads might have to eat a little future $?

If we end up with any one of Machado, Harper, JTR, or Kluber I'd be pretty happy with the offseason.  2 I'd be thrilled. 3 = ecstatic!

Am I the only one would like to see an OF of Myers-Margot-Harper?

Or even Myers-Jankowski-Harper?

I think Myers gets a bum rap from Padre fans based on the $ we gave him and the games he misses.

Both are issues....but if he plays 150 games I feel his contribution would be greater than Renfroes.

I see it the same way. His contract will always be an irritant but that is fixed ... so move on to his on-field comparison. In 2016 he played  in 157 games and in 2017 in 155 games, so his being injury prone is over-stated.

Now in LF field:

vs. Renfroe ... Myers is better defensively, better baserunner, better OBP, but less SLG (roughly the same age)

vs. Reyes (who would have to move over to LF) ... Myers is WAY better defensively and on the bases but the jury is out offensively given Reyes' short ML window.

vs. Cordero ... Myers is now better defensively, same on the base paths, and well ahead of Cordero hitting (proved as yet zero in the ML and has shown a major hole against LHP).

Since I also see dealing any (or all) of Renfroe - Reyes - Cordero while keeping Myers should yield a better return to support the team since moving Myers' contract would kill any quality return.

The Myers - Margot/Jankowski - Harper OF would be the best balanced offensively and defensively and be in place for 4 years which may take that long to get any equal or better OF prospects coming up in the system.

I’m with you guys on Myers. I’d hate to see Myers or Margot dealt this offseason because I feel the Padres would be selling low on two very talented players that fill important roles. Margot with his defense, speed and offensive potential in center is hard to sell low on. We all know Wil can hit and he’s a very solid all around player when healthy. If the Padres don’t end up with Harper, I’d like to see an OF of Myers/Margot in LF  CF with a Cordero/Renfroe platoon in RF and Jank as the defensive sub. Reyes was great last year. I loved the improvement in his approach, love his big personality, but I just don’t see him as a fit in the spacious Petco.  Renfroe is the  likely man out the door in my view. I only see Preller parting with Margot  in a package to get an ace or impact bat. I imagine other teams feel the same way we do about Reyes, impressive, but a small sample size and likely more of a DH.

Since PHIL (and their money) seem to be the key to any big time offseason movement .... this does NOT sound promising for getting things done:

While we already know this through observation, Phillies GM Matt Klentak made clear again that his organization intends to remain patient in its blockbuster free agent pursuits, as Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia recently reported. Klentak says he won’t be rushed into a decision by the onset of camp, saying that there’s no “deadline” to get a deal done before Spring Training. Generally, he said, “The fans are well aware that we’re pursuing the top end of free agency. When that’s going to resolve itself, we don’t really know.”

At some point the players (their families) and the agent might just conclude that PHIL is not going to be dishing out the big money to them (think Kimbrel, Keuchel, Gonzalez, Moustakas) and start to look at the best alternative offer out there. Then Harper and Machado' agents need also to make the call (and suck it up and make the deal first) if they begin to think PHIL is just waiting out someone else to sign one ... taking out competition for the other ... then low ball the other without any competition. Machado appears to only being pursued by CWS and PHIL (then potentially a second group of bottom feeders) and Harper by CWS, PHIL, SD, and maybe still WASH but they dumped a lot of bucks on FA after Boras turned the their off (may no longer be on the table).

PHIL will not sign them all ... may not care all that much which they sign as long as it is at a favorable price ... agents have to see that coming and move on lest their client is on the outside looking in (see Moustakas last year).

Thinking of the Nationals.

If I were them I’d keep the OF as Soto-Eaton-Robles and use that $30+ mil per year in other areas.

They will need to lock up Turner at some point and Rendon is about to be a free agent.

Also their bullpen is their weakest link at the moment.

So lets play silly and say that we sign Harper, and our OF is set for 4 years with Myers, Margot/Jank, Harper. We then have 3 young controllable OFs as trade pieces. Who in your opinion is a reasonable target for SD, knowing our needs and openings. If we sign Harper, can we still sign Moose?

If Moose signs for $8-10 MM (MLBTradeRumors estimate) probably yes. Doubt they front load Harper's deal.

As for the "excess" ... probably would sit Cordero in AAA as the #1 call-up for injury and some more development time to potentially supplant Jankowski as the 4th OF in 2020. Better plan that seeing if Reed or Olivares develop in maybe 2 years.

Then work to deal Renfroe but would be flexible on the return ... doubt they could get enough of a quality ML pitcher  , so might shoot for a high ceiling non-roster prospect. Ditto with Reyes but could send him to AAA too. Basically with the position players "set" and having waves of quality SP prospects coming soon ... never too soon to start building the next wave of prospects.

PHIL (after missing on Harper and Pollack) would be in play with CLEV (zero OF and need low cost alternatives while still trying to contend) and SF (not throwing in the towel for 2019 but also want low cost options). Preller has been good with these type of deals getting Tatis, Paddack, Naylor, Oliveras, and some others.
