Quote from MrPadre19 on November 3, 2018, 12:39 pmPut me down for spending it in offense.
But we aren’t getting Machado.
I’m sure he would choose a larger market plus we aren’t gonna commit $300 mil to one player.

Do we really need to RHH that watch singles bounce off the LF wall on the same SD team?

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 3, 2018, 2:27 pmNot many offensive players available in free agency that make sense.
Moustakas......Pollock.......that’s about it.
So if we’re gonna make a move to improve the offense it will most likely come via trade?

I would expect the trade route but that also is hard to figure out ... 3B is a need but a not sure anyone of quality is on the market (at a fair price). Not going to come from C (Hedges / Mejia), 1B (Hosmer), 2B (Urias), SS (Tatis) projecting forward. OF is a possibility even though the Padres have "bodies" that would have to be cleared .... a lot of room for upgrade I guess. Of the FA, I guess I would not rule out Moustakas on a deal for a couple of years ... not my favorite but none of the current (or near term) alternatives are that appealing. Has some LH power and still some decent defense.
Would love to find out what CINN would want for Senzel who could give the Padres POTENTIALLY 6 years of quality 3B ... given their roster I would guess ML/AAA/AA pitching that at least for the lead piece "elite". Senzel is in the Top 10 of ML prospects so would not come for scrubs but the Padres have "young" ML arms in Lauer and Lucchesi plus near term Top 100 arms in Paddack, Allen, Baez. Might also consider Quantril in the mix. Might be worth offering up a couple.
More likely they deal with Cleveland for Diaz as a mid-term fix and keep searching.

Quote from fenn68 on November 3, 2018, 3:11 pmThe MLBTradeRumors "prediction" of top 50 FA and their contracts / destinations is at best fodder for debate with most suggesting that it has no bearing to reality. I am sure I can't do any better ... different yes ... but not any more accurate.
I do expect both Harper and Machado to get very large / very long contracts with complicated opt-outs, incentives, options and most will conclude that the signing teams are nuts. Will not be the Padres.
Harper I have pegged going back to Washington where he has a good relationship ... they have the money (and are willing to spend) ... and they have a very good working relationship with Boras. Would expect a "creative" deal with some back loading to bridge the next two years of backloaded deals for Scherzer and Strasburg.
Machado to Philadelphia seems like the fit. He wants to stay on the East Coast (prefer NYY but not going to happen) and prefers to play SS. Philadelphia has the money and has indicated they want to spend to contend ... have the need at SS ... and last I checked still on the West Coast. (side: can't wait to see how Machado's no hustle and attitude plays in Philly once the start losing ... Philly fans ... whew!)
Corbin and the NYY seems the match with the NYY having some money to spend and a desperate need for SP (they may try to get two SP) and don't really need bats.
That is the top 3 and after that a bit of a toss up with FA not in the same echelon.
The Kikuchi to the Padres is the best bet for SD out of this top 50 list.

Quote from Booster SD on November 3, 2018, 3:37 pmMoose and CV would make a nice platoon situation at 3B. Then if you were to work a trade with CLE for either Carrasco or Kluber based around Renfroe and other pieces, then you could slide Myers back to LF.
Anyone else think that we are the stage where we need to consider both Margot and Jank as platoon players and not full 150 games a year guys?

Forget Kluber unless you want to give up Tatis plus plus. Cleveland is NOT in a fire sale ... more of a controlled burn.
Might be able to get Carrasco (2 years) but not sure why. Renfroe may be a piece that could interest the Indians. Getting 2 years control is not enough to give up longer term assets .... Renfroe has 5 years of control and is pre-arb and could be a key piece in a "better" deal for a longer control return piece. One could argue he is as (or more) valuable that the corner OF FA on the market (ex. Harper). Carrasco would be gone by the time the Padres are serious contenders.
Agree that Margot has to show more in 2019 ... and may (should) have reduced playing time if favor of strategically using Jankowski. Not ready yet for a full platoon since Jankowski is probably at his peak (and not really a starting CF on a contender) ... while Margot at 23 still has development potential to meet that prospect projection. 2019 is not a contending season so a bit more leash for Margot to make adjustments from the second year slump.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 3, 2018, 5:32 pmYeah I think 2019 will determine Margot’s future as a ball player.
At least with the Padres.
He needs to do better than last year...pretty significantly,to assure himself as our everyday CF.

Quote from Commie on November 3, 2018, 6:35 pmSo what about Myers for Desmond & Gray from COL? I know about Gray's issues last year but think combo of getting out of Coors and just different voices in his ear could get him back on track. He has top rotation ceiling.
Would add one of Kennedy, Avila or Stammen for instance to make the deal.
Desmond is a bit more versatile than Myers but there will be offensive drop off for him out of COL. Oppo for Myers. He loves to hit at Coors.
Money is about right for talent and control exchange.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 4, 2018, 4:56 amWe need to ADD offense.....IMO Desmond would not do that.
He is also a liability in the field at any position we could put him.
I like Gray enough.....but not at the cost of adding Desmond who is declining with age.
