Offseason Thread

This offseason definitely smells a little like 2015 when Shields hung around so late. Machado and Harper are both still out there without anyone really jumping. The Padres, imo, would be negligent in their operation of the team if they didn't at least check in this late in the offseason. Both guys would make sense for the team. Machado especially so if he was willing to play 3b. Personally I'm not a fan of either player's attitude, but there's no denying that they'd improve this team.

Who knows? Maybe the blow back from Acee's article gives Fowler just enough of a push to direct his guys to go hard after one or the other.

But probably not.

Maybe this is crazy, but thoughts on this scenario. SFG are intrigued by the thought of Machado in SF but have no position spot available. We have a glut of OFs. What would be the interest of either of the two trades.

SF gets Myers and Jank. SD gets Longoria and $24M in cash. SF outfield gets more athletic and a spot for Machado, and we get a above average defensive 3B for $12M AAV per year until Potts is ready in two years.

SF gets Myers and Jank. SD gets Crawford. SF gets the same as above, and SD has a SS until Tatis is ready and then Crawford slides over to 3B. Or Tatis slides to 3B and Crawford stays at SS. And SD adds a LH bat to help reduce our heavy RH hitting team.

Either way it reduces our payroll after this year, and gives us some cash to go get Kuechel if we want.

I'm not sure I like the idea of helping the Giants land Machado.

I would be worried about the declining performance of Crawford and Longoria both offensively and defensively).

Longoria especially. He is 33 under a 4 year contract with (after adjustments for buyouts and TB contributions) is still costing about $62MM. His wRC+ is now running below 100 (no reason to see it improving at his age) and last season his defensive metric showed real deterioration from his previous quality. He looks like a real candidate to turn into dead money in a couple of seasons. I would stay away from him.

At least Crawford is a SS, so more versatile. He is now also below 100 in wRC+ so not much offensive help. He is 32 under a 3 year contract worth about $46MM.

Myers on the other hand is only 28 and under a 4 year contract for $64MM. Since BOTH Myers and Crawford are about the same effective AAV ($15MM) with Myers' offense a push against Crawford's defense (both should be about 2.0-2.5 WAR) and Crawford's premium position could be a push against a higher risk of decline due to age with both filling the new team's needs .... should make a case for a even swap. The hole in that is SF ability to sign Machado (or come up with a suitable SS replacement). Payroll wise SD adds to the 2019 payroll while SF frees up some money ... no reason for SF to kick in any money to this deal

According to Acee per MLBTR the Padres are seriously chasing Machado in hopes in getting him while there is a lack of a strong market for him. I am torn on this possible signing. Love the bat and glove; especially at 3B and solves a huge hole for us, but not excited about his prime time persona during his tenure in LALA land. Loved him in BAL and wonder what brought about the difference. Who is the real Machado, BAL or LAD Manny? If we get the BAL Machado, really like that, if its the LAD Machado......Ugggh!!

If we do sign him, we will have $75M tied up into 3 players in 2020 in Myers, Machado, and Hosmer. That seems like a lot for a team of SD market dollar wise.

I didn't realize there was a difference between BAL and LAD Machado. To me, he's always been a POS with a terrible attitude and a quick trigger. I can think of at least a couple incidents in BAL where he flew off the handle over perceived slights from other players that should have been non-issues.

I, too, am torn on the guy. If we sign him, we get a stud 3B with a quality bat. But we also get that shit attitude, which I absolutely detest. That sort of thing is poisonous in a clubhouse and a huge drag on the kind of chemistry you need to make championship runs.

The guy wants to play SS because he is a "Me" guy. If the Padres did sign him and he played 3B and the team was way below .500... it wouldn't take long for him to do the "Manny don't hustle" thing

Just read an article from last Oct by a Baltimore scribe basically saying that Machado is now someone else's problem and his LAD antics were consistent with this time in Baltimore. Excellent player but a man that never matured.

So, it is just one scribe's view, but there must have been enough to get him to take that tact with this piece.

Gets back to my point, if scribe is right, not sure the Padres all they need from signing Machado on a big money / long term deal ... risk is probably bad for a team ... even with Machado ... will be a non-contender for the early part of his contact (making the dollars a waste). His dollars will minimize the signing of other key adds down the road and there are (will be) other and maybe better options down the road.

I am still no on Machado.

If they would have to pay long term $25MM per year for Machado, would not they be better served signing BOTH Moustakas AND Marwin Gonzalez for about the same AAV but shorter term commitments?

Moustakas would be solid at 3B (plus a Hosmer buddy) and Gonzalez could start the season an SS and evolve into the super utility guy (or solid fill if any player fails). Add that getting Gonzalez would make it "easier" to move more than one corner OF / reserve INF since he can play INF and OF at a proven ML level.

Padres are still at the point were the need multiple quality ML players to fit in with the prospects than just one star (we saw his value to winning in Balt without support).

Hosmer persona trumps Machado's... ying and yang.... I am ok with adding Machado at any time. Players like him dont grow on trees and are huge gets. Even if we trade him in 3 or 4 yrs we would get a HUGE HAUL back for merely signing a FA.. Win Win...

As far as 2020 Myers? He is cheap, cheap cheap in 2019.. If he puts it all together or at the very least stays healthy and gets his 30/30 goal... He would increase his trade value immensely and could be a center piece for a TOR before 2020... so AJP can have some Flex.... also I see at least 1 or 2 more trades before 2019 gets on its way, and supposedly we are still on JT Realmuto...

C- Realmuto/ 1B- Hosmer/ 2B Urias/SS Tatis Jr/ Machado 3B.... thats a WS type INF
