Quote from fenn68 on January 21, 2019, 2:32 pmJust speculation on the "mystery team" for Machado .... Miami.
They are coming close to having a real minimalistic payroll after 2019 (think Chen is left with 2020 being his end). They can go big money on Machado ... let him play SS ... face of the franchise in Miami works .... and he seems to get along with Jeter.
Long shot BUT ....
=============
For SD ... Moose makes sense from a need standpoint ... just a question of contract and his options. Same as last season so not a lot of teams seeking a 3B (on a long term deal) ... Preller could just be waiting for Moose to realize is ask is not going to work. Moose might not yet drop his ask until Machado deal is done since for some reason PHIL may move on to Moose (bumping Franco) and offer a better contract.
On the other hand, Preller still may be working on "mega deal" for Andujar (NYY), Franco (PHIL), Senzel (CINN), Riley (ATL) or ????????? Might see any of them longer term value than Moose.
Based on that, I expect a platoon of France / Garcia and will hopefully be surprised.

Quote from Commie on January 21, 2019, 5:44 pmI just cannot believe the team would do the UT piece and then run out a worse squad than last year. There has to be at least four moves to be made: SS, SPx2, 3b. Right? 🙏

I can see at a minimum a left side infielder ..even a Galvis reunion...2 SP like Pomz and Buchholtz.... I think the plan is to start 2019 with Kinsler 2B Urias at SS and XX? At 3B..if they resign Galvis..he starts at SS (until Tatis Jr os ready) Urias at 2B and Kinsler at 3B.. If they sign or trade for a 3B then its Urias at SS and Kinsler at 2B to start season... On the SP front I can see Stroman + Pomz being added..or other at least..for 2019.. So I think at a minimum 3 or so trades or signings between now and ST

Quote from fenn68 on January 22, 2019, 8:29 pmBeginning to get harder to figure out where the Padres go from here this winter.
3B still has the Moustakas option (not excited about any other FA and don't believe Machado is realistic) and maybe a ripple effect with others sending Franco over. Don't see any kind of match-up to get Andjuar for NYY.
SP not much exciting after Keuchel who apparently is being viewed less favorably than the media view him due to some diminishing peripheral stats (and at his asking price). Don't really know of any quality SP available via trade except for an overpay for short term control.
In sort of a reverse view ... not sure how the Padres can effectively deploy (and develop) Myers, Renfroe, Reyes. and Cordero as corner OF ... may need to play to develop and Myers (and probably Renfroe) will play most of the games. Reyes and Cordero to AAA? Both seem too far along to go back to AAA for 2019. Preller wants to deal but apparently there a less than expected teams seeing corner OF (at the level the Padres have to offer). Still FA on the market. At what point does Preller shift his return focus from a ML player to maybe getting prospects in return?
Just don't see sellers for what the Padres want to buy and don't see buyers (at a decent return) for what the Padres have to sell. P.S. have no idea where Cleveland is going with their OF (or total lack of OF) ... seems like a perfect match with SD except for what they have to give back to SD (except Kluber who Preller apparently only wants to flip). Maybe that is our last great hope of a winter deal

Quote from Booster SD on January 23, 2019, 6:15 amI can see due to injury both Cordero and Reyes starting the season in AAA, along with Urias and his hamstring. Then you start the season with Renfroe, Myers, Jank, and Margot in SD and hope that Myers and Renfroe start hot and some other team then figures out that they need one of the two, and then a trade happens. Of course, you could see Myers get hurt and then you can start shuttling Reyes/Cordero from EP to SD based on performances in AAA.
I still think Moose ends up in SD, and Iglesias on a MiL contract with an invite to Spring and he makes the team when they can more safely shuffle rosters and move guys to the 60 day DL to free up a spot for Iglesias. And you start the season with an INF of Moose, Iglesias, Kinsler, and Hosmer until Tatis and Urias are ready at the same time. Then you simply DFA Iglesias and have Kinsler as the back up along with Garcia and his LH bat.

Quote from fenn68 on January 23, 2019, 10:37 amTaking the approach that nothing significantly new is going to happen to the roster (hope I am wrong) tried to come up with some logic that will make the Padres a better team in 2019.
First, not necessarily a better team but good chance a better record since there is a good chance both Arizona and SF will be worse due to age and departures without any significant adds. Colorado for now is on the bubble of being the same or worse. Padres do play a major part of their games against those teams. So, maybe the Padres don't have to improve all that much to get that improved record (not suggesting a contender mind you).
Clear both offense and SP were major disasters in 2018 ... and SP is still a total question mark but offensively a case can be made (albeit with some wishful thinking) of significant improvement. Consider their OPS by position rank in 2018 and the potential for 2019:
............ 2018 ............................ 2019 player ....... 2018 OPS ............ Career OPS
C: .707 (10th in MLB) ............. Hedges .............. .711 .......... .637 ..... has Hedges turned the corner offensively?
................................................... Mejia ................ TBD but his calling card is offense
1B: .716 (25th) ........................... Hosmer ........... .720 .......... .773 .... rebound to career average?
2B: .641 (27th) .......................... Kinsler ............ .681 ............ . 782 ... Kinsler is already an improvement
................................................... Urias ............... TBD but projected as an offensive asset
SS: .669 (25th) ......................... Tatis ................ TBD but should improve that in his sleep
3B: .709 (22nd) ........................ Garcia .............. .613 ............. .696 ... stronger vs RHP
................................................... France ............. TBD but hitting is his forte (longshot)
LF: .730 (20th) ......................... Myers .............. .763 ............. .768 ... better than the 2018 crop
CF: .701 (19th) .......................... Margot ............. . 675 ........... .697 ....
................................................... Jankowski ........ .678 ............ .640 ...
RF: .784 (15th) .......................... Renfroe ............ .805 ........... .793 ...
.................................................... Reyes ............... .838 ........... .838 ... best OPS probably worst defense
In 2018 the team sat at 28th in OPS but with the exception of 3B there is a chance that we see improvement in all the other positions with the current mix. Enough to be a contender ... no ... but maybe enough to move into the mid pack in MLB.

Preller "checks in" on everyone.
Guessing he just is laying groundwork IF either Machado or Harper or Gonzalez decide to go to some sort of short term deal (much shorter than the expected market) .... expect a lot of teams become "interested" if that group shifts to short term to re-hit the FA market again in a few years.
Probably the same with Moose ... just on a lesser degree.
