Quote from MrPadre19 on January 20, 2019, 9:22 amOf course there’s probably only a 2% chance we sign Machado.
But it does kinda make some sense and may explain why we’ve been so quiet over the last month or so in adding/trading players.

Well it does say that the "Mystery" team has the HIGHEST bid out.. So if we are that team....hmmm

Quote from dusty on January 20, 2019, 3:46 pmLol IF the Padres are, in fact, the mystery team, with the highest bid, and Machado signs with them then how will Padres twitter and everyone in the fan base (including me) feel after the frustration and calls for change feel? I would love to see that press conference and would love to hear the interviews that would immediately follow with ownership.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 21, 2019, 12:28 pmSo are we stuck waiting on Machado to sign before we do something about 3b?
It's no secret we still need to add SP,3B,and SS.
Does anyone think AJ will sign any of the existing free agents or is he just waiting for certain trades to materialize based
on where Machado lands?
Like with the Phils. for instance?
Do you think he just doesn't want Moustakas or do you think his asking price is just too high?
It just seems like alot of teams are in a holding pattern both with trades and free agents waiting to see where Harper and Machado land.

Supposing that the Padres *are* the mystery team in on Machado (which I doubt), then it was would make sense that they wait till that deal is resolved before moving onto Moustakas.
Either way, Moustakas just makes too much sense to not be a target at some point. Get him on a 1-3 year deal and he can lock down the corner until Potts or someone better takes over.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 21, 2019, 1:49 pmI'm not really assuming that the Padres are in serious talks with Machado.....just that "other" teams are that may be waiting to sign him before
finalizing a deal with the padres.
Like for Franco in Philly as an example.
Or Moustakas may be waiting to decide on a few offers based on where Machado lands.
Maybe Philly has made him an offer contingent on the Machado decision which therefore also impacts us if
we've also made Moose an offer.
I just wish the Machado- Harper sagas would end already so the rest of us can get on with our offseason......

Quote from fenn68 on January 21, 2019, 2:17 pmI underestimated the impact of Machado and Harper holding up the overall market ... but I think the main reason is Philadelphia and their statement that they have "stupid money" to spend this winter.
Clearly they are in on Machado and Harper but most seem to think that if even just one signs with PHIL ... money is still on the table for the likes of Keuchel or Pollack or Mouse or Kimbrel ... you get the point ... everyone thinks PHIL will spend and wants them IF Machado and/or Harper go elsewhere. Why take a "lower" contract when PHIL might go high. For all of the higher end FA ... they know the will get signed so why panic ... ST is a month away and for some signing at the end of ST is fine. Probably fine with Machado / Harper too.
