IMO Pads have lost what little leverage they had re trading an OF when they made it public Myers was going back to the OF.
Media & to a degree this board are "lumping" all the OF together in a way that is a little misleading. Myers is superior to either Renfroe or Reyes because of his speed/athleticism. That plus his contract weighing down his value puts him in a different trade category than Renfroe/Reyes. Barring a trade, it's pretty simple:
Myers is going to be the LF, Margot it going to be the CF, Renfroe or Reyes is going to be the RF. Cordero will definitely challenge for playing time, but if they have all 6 guys, I could see him being optioned down to play every day to start season. Reyes is the other guy who could go down, but not much to gain from doing so. Jankowski's role is pretty well established.
Worth mentioning Cordero & Reyes (Dec) coming off surgery, Margot off a bone bruise to foot in Dec.

Just to add more frustration to the off-season:
1. A report that the NYY are close to dealing Sonny Gray .... first, Oakland and SD were leaders then they were not then radio silence. Think NYY have to make a roster move to accommodate the signing of Ottavino (suggesting any trade would likely be for a non-roster prospect).
2. Braves GM says they are close to a deal (70%) with the principle parts agree upon ... probably suggesting 2 of the 3 players involved (or 3 of the 4) are settled and just a debate on the last piece. Then, another radio silence event.
Can anyone get something done?

Going deeper into obscurity ... report that Manny Machado's father is saying that Manny has offers from multiple teams INCLUDING the NYY and LAD (no idea what the offers are but that is kind of important) and implies he MAY sign with a team less discussed. Wonder what Manny's agent thinks.
Less than 30 days until ST gets into full swing.

Guys on MLB XM were talking about the Angels earlier.
They have basically spent $35 million for 5 very average players who don't move the needle.
They've signed Bour,Harvey,Cahill,Lucroy and now Cody Allen.
They were saying the team would have been much better off just signing Machado or Harper and actually getting a
player who would make a difference and sell tickets.....and I agree.
But this is a tale of the downfall of having a bad Farm system.
If they had guys even remotely ready and competent in their Farm system to pitch,catch and play 1b they could have left all these guys alone and added another star to the lineup with Trout.
If i were an Angels fan i would be scratching my head wondering what the heck they are trying to do?
All five of those guys could end up with negative WAR in 2019....and cost them $35 mil because they needed "bodies".

I can see why the Angels are not in on Machado ... not the $30MMish but the 7-10 years when they will have to try to extend Trout and Simmons after 2020. Trout (if they can sign him) would be a bigger contract than anything we are talking about so far plus Simmons is one of the top SS in MLB.
Keep in mind they are "stuck" with a major contract in place for 3 more years with Pujols and 4 more years with Upton. Plus Moreno is probably a bit gun shy after the disaster contracts with Pujols and Hamilton (now past).
All of that and they still were a .500 team with no pitching, IF they were going to spend big ... they would aim for pitching.
Besides needing money for Trout and Simmons .... they are in a stadium dispute with Anaheim with POTENTIALLY the Angels moving to building a new stadium in Orange County but outside of Anaheim and that could cost them a lot of cash ... even a new deal with Anaheim might cost them since from some reports the current Anaheim leadership wants to end what they think is a sweetheart deal and get more money out of the Angels.

Expect the NYY are looking for a very good NON-Roster prospect (SD has probably more inventory than either CINN or SF.
CINN and SF ... probably want Gray more than Preller but don't have the asset to swing a direct deal.
So, 3 way with SD being the middle man brokering the deal between NYY and either CINN and SF. (of course still assuming a 1 for 1 for 1 package but COULD expand, I guess).
IF SD gives up a very good non-roster prospect to NY, hard to envision the return from either SF (not much on the 40 man or in the minors) or CINN (not going to be Suarez or Senzel).
Don't even have a good idea how this fits together .... maybe why NYY are not getting anything done on moving Gray.

If the following is correct ... can see why the Padres may be out of the picture for 1 year / $7.5MM of Sonny Gray:
Jan. 19, 9:02am: Expect Gray to be moved sometime this weekend, per Fancred’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link). The Reds and Yankees are inching closer to a deal, with two prospects and a draft pick the expected return for Gray. Long and Stephenson (currently the #6 and #7 prospects in the Reds system per MLB.com) are the prospects most likely to be headed to New York. It’s not a done deal, however, as the Giants, Brewers, and Braves are still part of the conversation.

Those two prospects are rated "50" and Stephenson was rated as the #10 catching prospect in 2018 but it is the draft pick that is the knockout blow. Has to be CINN Competitive Balance Pick which is at #36 ... a lot would have to fall into place with Gray to give him a QO and get a similar pick back.
Looking like CINN is pulling a SD 2015 shoot for the moon now that they have Puig, Kemp, Wood, Roark on a 1 and done deals plus Gennett in his last control year. Adding Gray (and arguable overpaying) fits the theme.
Expect to see a lot of selling at the trade deadline by CINN.

Wow that competitive balance pick they are rumored to be giving up is the Reds banking/gambling on him to get a QO. Well done by the Yankees convincing the reds he will pitch well enough /getting insurance they get compensation for the QO pick. With that being said, unless Gray reverts back to his old self, gotta say I’m glad padres didn’t make that deal
