I think it is wishful  thinking that Cleveland ... favorite to win the AL Central ... would deal Kluber (5.6WAR) who is under control for 3 more years with a team friendly contract for anything less than multiple ML pieces that can generate similar WAR in 2019-20.

Also, consider that they seem willing to deal Kluber because they have enough ML pitching to at least hold down a creditable SP staff and they have a decent defensive catcher. What they need is impact OF ... likely 3 since their top OF barely of ML quality.

Padres would HAVE to include at least 2 OF (guessing Margot AND Renfroe) to even open the discussion then debate the prospect to be player 3 and player 4.

FWIW this morning Jim Duquette commented multiple times without elaborating that "the Padres are hard to [make a] deal with."

Guessing he means that AJP won't include any of the top prospects from the farm in deals.

He's gotta do something: no 3B, no SS, no proven ML SP.

Fenn, I clearly stated you have to start with an A type young piece. To me Margot, Morejon and Baez are clear A pieces. One of those guys can be the centerpiece of a deal. I doubt AJ would give 2 of those 3. Hedges is a clear upgrade to anyone they have on that roster. Hedges would be their starting everyday catcher. That’s a nice secondary piece to a contending team. Renfroe would be a 35-40 HR guy in CLEV and be a starter. If Pads add a Stammen or Jankowski who would be useful players to a contending team I would think that would be close to enough.

I keep throwing Lauer in because I don’t see him with a future here and he can step into backend of either Cincy or CLEV rotation. Plus he’s from Ohio. 😃

Got a new speculation from MLB:

NYY get Kluber ... they want to upgrade SP staff (have OF surplus, Gray is a known trade piece, and Andujar is the prize hitter).

CLEV gets Andujar, Frazier (OF), and Gray

Cleveland then flips Andujar to SD for more OF help.

Cleveland could solve their OF problem with young, longer control ML OF plus a filler SP in Gray. Question would become which OF(s) fit best for Cleveland from SD (considering Frazier COULD play CF and they have Martin who is a CF). Guessing Renfroe.

NYY gets a Cy Young level SP on a power laden offense (watch out Boston)

CLEV gets Frazier (LF), Renfroe (RF), Gray (SP), and another piece from SD (not sure that is enough unless the other SD player is impactful).

SD gets their 3B in Andujar (Preller does not seem to care about the defense) for Renfroe and another piece ... somewhat the wild card.

The speculation was just the potential 3 way match in a Kluber - NYY deal and ID'd SD but not the players involved.

Who makes sense for the "other piece" besides Renfroe to get Andujar? Keep in mind it will need to be someone Cleveland really values. I guess it depends how everyone would value Renfroe. Substitute Margot for Renfroe ... the other part changes likely.

Too many moving if conditions here to truly understand but as a concept has some legs.

Perhaps the other part is taking the bad contract of Ellsbury so that NYY can either sign Machado or Harper w/o or less luxury tax implications.

So this one is for MrP, from the ESPN website. A proposed trade between SD and ATL. ATL gets Renfroe and Mejia and SD gets Riley(a target of MrP I believe) and Gohara.

I personally think that maybe ATL would prefer Hedges; however, either way I think I would pull the trigger. Thoughts?

Lauer is a good match with Cleveland IMO b/c their rotation is all RHP.   They could use a LHP.  People saying we "can't" trade Lauer will       NE-VER be able to make a significant trade b/c they are wildly over-valuing our own guys... you are right that Gore > Morejon > Logan Allen > Weathers > Lucchesi > Lauer... and that's just LHP!!

He did come on strong 2nd half last year, and let's not forget he was the 1st round pick, not Lucchesi.  Wouldn't surprise me if he has a better year or even career than Lucchesi, but he is so far from an "untouchable" trade piece that hearing we can't trade him in a deal for Kluber just makes me shake my head...

Renfroe to ATL for Kolby Allard?

Steve Adams

I wouldn't trade any MLB-ready starter for Renfroe

Obviously Renfroe would help ex the Indians relative to what they have, but I think guys who can hit 25 HR ... and that's about it ... have less value than "we" (Pads homers) might think.  It's one thing to have the "S" (slug),  it's another to have the "OP" (on base PLUS.. )

I am sure that the NYY would want to put both Ellsbury and Gray in deals ... each with only 1 year at $7.5MM.

But in a Kluber trade they are not in the driver's seat ... Kluber is the elite prize and Cleveland does not need to trade him and clearly does not want to add payroll. Basically Cleveland wants quality, low cost, long control multiple ML OF (sort of why no trade is happening).
