What do you guys think about signing buy low candidate Randall Delgado?

Still young and had success when healthy.

Maybe a change of scenario mixed with health and some "Balsley magic"?

Might be worth the $$ moreso than a much higher cost Starter like Eovaldi,Keuchel or Ryu.

Might be a candidate for signing on a minor league contract with an invitation to ML camp. Injuries and his drop in velocity (down to about 91MPH) make him a long shot (and not worth a roster spot). Maybe work in initially as a RP option ... only 28 so some chance of rebound. Really has not been (even when healthy) a SP since 2013 ... and actually never that good ... a guy with big potential that never really materialized.

Do think Spangy is on the bubble but probably has enough value to hang around (or get traded) before they go the non-tender route (his arb number is not that bad given the Padres projected payroll).

He for now still provides insurance if Urias under performs and if they don't keep Myers at 3B (and not get a suitable replacement) he and Villanueva could be the platoon solution for 3B. Additionally, he does has the flexibility to cover some OF ... and this analytical era (see LAD, CUBS) the moving of players in/out and all over the field is the hot trend.

Also, there is a chance the Garcia is the starting SS on day 1 until Tatis arrives. Not betting (or really wanting) the Padres re-sign Galvis and with Tatis coming soon ... why waste money on even filler.

On the POTENTIAL of the platooning Spangenberg / Villanueva 3B, consider 2018 OPS:

VS. LHP: Villanueva (1.118) .... Spangenberg (.417)

VS RHP: Spangenberg (.725) ... Villanueva (.574)

That platoon would be better than Myers both offensively and defensively making it even more justifiable to deal either Renfroe or Myers. Something to consider.

This is a little "out there" take on Myers....

Has anyone considered that in addition to Myers' contract being an issue to the acquiring team, it's also an issue for the Pads to eliminate it?  Removing Myers would put our TOTAL payroll at around 60MM.  Short of signing Machado or something, I don't see how payroll would end up anywhere near where it was last year.

I don't care & teams shouldn't spend just to spend, but wouldn't Pads maybe come under some scrutiny here?

Myers' HR watching, "laid back-ness", inability to be a true team leader, and sense of entitlement ("LF is boring", regressed at 1B due to not working to get better defensively) way beyond his actual worth, .250 BA when ability is there for so much more.... are all increasingly driving me crazy.   But IMO, it's an easy call that you keep him & deal probably Reyes, who I love but we are all really over-rating... always going to be a defensive liability on field anywhere.

Agree that Myers' contract is not really a constraining issue for the Padres ... clearly not in 2019 and not really in 2020-22. However, it is likely to be a constraining issue to a club trading for him (plus they would have to give up something). Barring a real surprise ... see him as a Padre in 2019 (and likely in LF).

Reyes has virtually no trade value ... I like his POTENTIAL but being unproven and one dimensional (offense only) only a very limited set of team would even be interested and fewer would be willing to give up anything of value. Padres are best served trying to establish some more value first by letting play for them.

As usual that get me down to Renfroe being the better trade chip (control, low cost, power) is the profile that would yield the best return among Myers, Reyes, and Renfroe. It is about the best return since I am not in love with any of the three.

Considering Allen Cordobas' less than stellar 2018 is it logical to think that we may DFA him to open a roster spot?

I don't want to lose him but isn't it unlikely someone would snatch him up?

Actually I think there would be a very good chance he gets claimed if DFA. He is still relatively young and most of the GMs know he was recovering for a very serious injury. His hitting potential is (was) high and he does have 2 more MiL options to see if he rebounds. There are some seriously bad farm systems out there and soft 40 man rosters .... would make a smart gamble (remember once the get him they can DFA him later if they need the roster spot).

Dickerson released.....Makita DFA

So maybe he and/or Torrens used as trade pieces?

If we keep Mejia and Hedges along with the other C we have in the system Torrens is expendable.

OK, the Padres are now at 40 and need to recast that by Nov 20 to set the Rule 5 40 man roster. Preller is likely pushing for some trades in the next couple of weeks to clear some roster spots before having to DFA players.

As I see it there are a minimum of 5 prospects likely to be added (all in the Top 30):

#5.  Paddack (RHP)

#12. Espinosa (RHP)

#25. A. Allen (C)

#28. Olivares (OF)

#29. Avila (RHP)

plus I would consider one RP ... Rodriguez.

So maybe a minimum of +6.  Offsets? I will suggest: Asuaje; Pirela; Guerra; Lockett; Rea; Brewer. IF there is someone else maybe Torrens but keep in mind that mid-season they may want to add a non-roster type (e.g. Tatis, L.Allen, Munoz) so they may need to gamble a bit now so they have some flexibility at that point.

Agree Torrens is expendable ... especially if they really like A.Allen. Not much trade value since he was just in A+ but might be a piece to close a bigger deal. Sort of the 2nd or 3rd player in a deal. Catching prospects are alway needed ... so might deal him after a AA season gambling he hits well and builds some trade value. Really a function of who is being DFA ahead of him and their long run value.

Sort of the same with Cordoba whose potential I like more ... at least offensively. Wish they put him in the OF and just let him work on his bat.

Jumping WAY ahead ... the Rule 5 adds at a minimum NEXT winter probably takes care of both since they will have to consider adding L.Allen, Quantrill, Munoz, Naylor, and Reed .... all Top 30 types ... and except for Reed all should be in AAA and very easy Rule 5 targets.

I'm kinda hoping Quantrill and Naylor are used as trade pieces.

Naylor has more value to an AL team who needs a 1b/DH than to us with Hosmer locked in and Myers on the team.(and no DH available)

As far as Quantrill I guess I just don't see what everyone else does.

IMO he's probably our 6th best SP prospect. So he too I think has more value as a trade piece while his name recognition and prospect status is at its peak.

Again...just my opinion on him.
