From Jim Duquette in his top 25 FA write-up:

11. Yusei Kikuchi, LHP (28 years old)
Kikuchi -- who is expected to be posted this offseason -- spent time on the disabled list with a left shoulder issue this past season, which may give pause to some Major League clubs, especially considering the underlying concerns many MLB teams already have about the health of Japanese pitchers transitioning to a big league schedule. But from speaking to evaluators who have seen Kikuchi pitch, the consensus is that the left-hander who plays for the Seibu Lions can be a mid-rotation starter in the Majors.
Interested teams: Rangers, Dodgers, Yankees, Mariners, Phillies, Padres

More for Jim Duquette's Top 25 FA write-up ... and I would NOT take this seriously as it relates to Padres "interest" in certain players but for your amusement these players ... in Duquette's mind .... are of interest to the Padres:

#1 Machado (OK, stop laughing NOW) ... 1 of 6 interested teams

#8 Eovaldi .... 1 of 3 teams (apparently his WS work did not impress a lot of teams)

#11 Kikuchi .... 1 of 6

#14 Ryu .... 1 of 3

#17 Happ .... 1 of 5

#20 Miller ... 1 of 5

#21 Britton ... 1 of 7

A lot of arms on Duquette's Top 25 ... in turn the lack of compelling bats might help the interest in trades for a Renfroe / Myers.

Not surprised on the linkage of the Padres to pitchers but unless one falls a bit in potential suitors (lower contract demands) Padres may just be used to boost the price to others. Looks like a collection of aging arms that are hit and miss. Padres better working trades or going with their own prospects.

Count me in the “keep Myers” camp.

While I understand why some want him gone I think we need him.

I also think we are done with trades for prospects.

We need major league producers......IMO we are in the “trade prospects for major league players” stage of

this rebuild.

We don’t need to save money.....and we don’t need prospects.....so what is the purpose of trading Wil Myers?

The purpose of trading Myers is he is a man without a position in SD. He cant stay healthy, and when he is IMO he is still the 4th best OF on the team. We are right handed heavy, so I say Cordero is safe IMO. So as mentioned by Fenn, that leaves Myers, Renfroe, Reyes all battling for the same spot.  Personally not a big fan of Myers because of the posing coming out of the batters box and the health issues. Thats why I would like to see Myers go instead of Renfroe or Reyes.

I also don’t like his “posing” in the batters box but would offer that this is not a good reason to trade him.

Plus due to his contract we won’t get anything of value in return.....therefore trading him over Reyes or Renfroe doesn’t make much sense.

Unless the money is needed to sign someone else?

Otherwise, his value is greater to us than in a trade.

If we were to acquire a legitimate 3B my position may then change....

Do think the knock on Myers of not being able to stay healthy is a bit overplayed. Clearly lost significant time in 2015 and 2018 but for 2016-17 (2 years) he was 20th in most games played (over 150 per season). If he were out every season for significant time that would be compelling but that is not the case with Myers. Still would trade him but health would not be a major factor in the decision.

Unless they keep Myers at 3B (not out of the question although maybe not optimum), the corner OF glut will force a trade of someone. If Preller cannot find a decent deal for someone ... that may become the short term decision.

Cordero .. agree that he is very unlikely to be dealt given his POTENTIAL for the Padres but has not demonstrated enough ML production to get a value back via a trade .... good chance to start the season in AAA.

Reyes ... love this guy's potential as a hitter given his 2018 in-season development focusing on better contact and using the entire field (where is the DH when you need it). Downside is that he is the worst fielder of the quartet. Still a POTENTIAL play on a young player and not likely to generate any trade interest to the level of his POTENTIAL. Start the season as the Padres RF.

So the trade (if any) is down to Myers vs. Renfroe .... both about the same age ... both about the same control ... Myers (in LF) is the better fielder (not necessarily good but better) ... Myers is the better baserunner .... Myers is the better OBP guy ... Renfroe is the better SLG ... Renfroe is the better OPS ... Myers has the better versatility (good or bad can play the corners as Renfroe but in an emergency can play CF, 1B, 3B ... positions that are foreign to Renfroe) ... Renfroe has the much better (cheaper) contract.

Don't really think the difference between the two is all that much (different sure) with on-field value. Frankly I could easily move on from both if the was a better option near term. So back to the key point ... trade the one that delivers the best return ... and I would expect that to be Renfroe given his control / contract. However, there are some teams that MAY value Myers for his ML track record and versatility ... he actually has a career OPS that is pretty consistent around .790 (slightly above average) which may be more appealing that taking a risk that Renfroe's 2018 is a real indicator of future performance. Basically, a contender with money may actually prefer Myers (small shot group) while Renfroe would appeal to the masses contender or non-contender due to his contract.

Buyers choice.

The first Padres' blockbuster move of the offseason:

The San Diego Padres have traded catcher Raffy Lopez to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later or cash consideration, the Padres announced today.

One down and one to go this week.

Reboot .... 2 to go again:

The Padres announced today that they have claimed infielder Greg Garcia off waivers from the Cardinals.

29 year old LHH utility INF (can back-up SS/2B/3B) from El Cajon. Not much of a hitter but the ability to back-up SS is important no matter who they end up with at SS to start the season ... allows Urias to concentrate on 2B.

Bad news for Asuaje ... and maybe Spangenberg who may be more available in a trade.

What do you guys think about signing buy low candidate Randall Delgado?

Still young and had success when healthy.

Maybe a change of scenery mixed with health and some "Balsley magic"?

Might be worth the $$ moreso than a much higher cost Starter like Eovaldi,Keuchel or Ryu.

It doesnt look like he has pitched over 100 innings since 2011, so thats 7 years so it would take awhile to stretch him out to take a valuable amount of SP innings.

San Diego native.  900K estimated 1st yr Arb.  Out of options.  Most importantly, can play SS.   Similar career BA to Spangy, but  better OBP.   Oh, and he's a good pinch hitter.  I really wouldn't be surprised if they simply non-tender Spangy (2.3 MM est) whose value is really hurt by not being an option for whatever reason at SS, plus also kills the value of his speed by trying to hit for power that he doesn't have, resulting in way too low OBP.  Spangy tantalizes as a potential multi-tool platoon 2B, but that doesn't help the Pads much with Urias' arrival.

Process just starting, many changes coming soon, but early projection to me is Garcia & Villanueva as the L/R Infield bench
