Since many of you have stated your distaste for multiple prospect trades for ML players. So let me throw one out to get some post Christmas discussion going. We send Luchessi, Erlin, Stammen, Yates, and Baez to NYY for Andujar and Gray. I know Andujar and his defense, but I looked at some quick stats and he is getting better as he gets older, so maybe he get to adequate and with the other INF options (Tatis, Urias, Hosmer, Kinsler late inning defense sub) maybe we can live with his glove to get bat into the line up. So go ahead and behead me! 🙂

LOL....Stirring up the pot I see

Well Fenn, I pondered this deal after listening to MLB radio on XM this morning. And they were saying the biggest holes in NYY was bullpen help and a swing man that can either pitch long from the pen or a swing start here or there based on the health of both Tanaka and Sabathia. This is where Erlin, Yates, and Stammen help based on salary of the players and giving them good help with very small hit towards the luxury tax and helping them afford Machado. I know Gregorius is a FA after the year, but they will have Machado that "wants" to be a SS at this time in his career, so he could be the 3-4 year answer at SS for NYY. It would be easy for them to sign Moose on a 1 year deal to cover the loss of Andujar (better D as well) and then they could chase either Rendon from WAS or Arenado from COL next winter when both are FA as the long term solution for 3B in NYY. Or if they put Machado at 3B, then Torres can cover SS until the return of Gregorius and they could sign a stop gap 2B such as Dozier on a 1 year deal. And if NYY wants, no way they get outbid for Gregorius returning to NYY.

From the SD side, it would be more about getting the bat of Andujar. Tatis, Urias, and Hosmer are all considered above average defensively and we need the strong bat. Live with the glove and have the utility defense guy come in late if needs be. I dont think losing Stammen and Yates this year is that big of deal. Gray helps this year, not that important W & L in 2019, but helps mentors the younger pitchers, becomes trade foder, or likes SD so much and sees the upcoming talent and wants to sign an extension. Erlin in SD is basically Strahm IMO so he is replaceable. IMO it really boils down to Andujar for Baez, and I think I like that deal.

Gotta do something, so week at work this week! 😛

So how about back to some "serious" fodder for infield help. Is there any interest in acquiring Franklin Barreto from OAK? If we think that Urias could handle 3B, and place Barreto at 2B, probably his best defensive position. His a MiL .280 hitter with .350 OBP  that seams like he can steal some bases as well. Doesnt seem to be able to get into ML with OAK, not sure if they have lost faith in him or see him as a 4A player. Is he worth a gamble?

IF the NYY want to stay under the luxury tax ... they can't sign Machado (or any other big FA). As it stands (Per Cot's) they are only $11.750MM under ... Machado will have an AAV of $30MM+. Sort of one reason they want to move Gray (about $9MM) and maybe Gardner (about $7.5MM) .... both FA after the season for league minimum types and that still will not make enough room for Machado under the cap ... but would open room for INF support (Dozier?) and RP (tons on the market). Plus most teams want to leave a "cushion" to add at the trade deadline.

Looks to me as the NYY have no option but to blow through the luxury tax line if they sign Machado. Also, keeping Andjuar (at league minimum) makes sense given the INF situation. If they can't move Gray and / or Gardner ... they may need to move some prospects to fill their holes.

Think getting Andjuar is a lot harder than you think ... NYY have alternative routes to get their holes filled.

From MLB.com ... Morosi:

The Padres and Indians are engaged in discussions about a trade that would send Kluber to San Diego, sources told MLB.com, although one person with knowledge of the talks does not believe the Padres have eclipsed the Dodgers as favorites to land Kluber -- yet.

The Padres can offer what the Indians may need to justify moving Kluber: Major League talent. One source said Cleveland's return in the deal could include one or more from a group of three young Major Leaguers: outfielders Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe and catcher Austin Hedges.

Cleveland likely would obtain at least one prospect as well, although shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and lefty MacKenzie Gore (San Diego's top two prospects) are not expected to be involved in a Kluber deal.

The Indians and Padres have a good working relationship, which led to Cleveland's acquisition of relievers Brad Hand and Adam Cimber in July.

=========

Hard pressed to see them move Hedges since none to the reports seem to suggest Mejia is defensively ready and adding Kluber with a very young staff ... an elite defensive catcher makes everyone better.

Now moving Margot (replaced by Jankowski / Cordero) and Renfroe (replaced by Myers) as the base works since Cleveland just lacks OF ... and maybe the "prospects" include A.Allen as a catcher future plus one of L.Allen, Baez, or Quantrill as the AAA SP in waiting? Cleveland would probably want to upgrade to Paddack. Cleveland does fill the other objective of lowering payroll since Kluber is controlled for 3 years: $17.5 - 18.0 - 18.5MM. (also why Myers in not an option).

Padres have the payroll space. "Could work"

A trade proposal that may be a bit difficulty to put together but consider:

1. LAD want to sign Bryce Harper (apparently) and Harper want to sign with LAD ... BUT he is likely to command an AAV of about $35MM

2. LAD problem with the salary cap this year is that they are only $24MM under and signing Harper would kick in some penalties (note 2020 they shed about $80MM of payroll so no issue going forward).

3. LAD has an All-Star level INF in Corey Seager who is a LHH power bat under control for 3 years and in arbitration ... major asset BUT they won with him not contributing in 2018 and can use Chris Taylor full at SS.

4. LAD has a 39 year old Rich Hill at an AAV of $16MM who is a FA after the season.

IF LAD bundled Seager ($3MM) and Hill ($16MM) and take that savings with their $24MM under position they could sign Harper ($35MM) and have "cushion" remaining for trade deadline moves.

Enter SD ... what at league minimum cost would they have to give up (considering they are eating a big contract) to get these two? Could go prospects but LAD has indicated they would like a RHH bat (Myers too expensive AAV) so Renfroe? Reyes? plus a prospect. Or pass on the bat and deal a SP (Lucchesi or Lauer). Padres do have some low cost appealing options.

Hosmer - Urias - Tatis - Seager for 3 years could be interesting.

Two teams that were apparently in on Cruz (as their DH) are now left looking for a bat ... TB and Houston. Seattle seems to want to move Encarnacion (but he is costly).

What could the Padres get out of those teams (if anything) if they dangle one of their corner OF (more valuable than just a DH) ... Renfroe - Myers - Reyes? Keep in mind both teams see making the playoffs in 2019 a priority ... so maybe a strong prospect. Also, TB just dealt for Diaz (3B) which bumps Duffy (3B/SS) ... maybe he could be part of a deal as an interim SS/3B Padre.

I think both would be interested if we attached either Yates or Stammen in order to clear the salary of Myers. Everyone can use RP, especially teams that want/expect to be in the playoffs. I think HOU gives us a mid level prospect, and I think we could get Duffy out of TAM, which could play well for us. However, since he has 3 years of control we might have to add a prospect to TAM. So if we get them to take Myers and his salary, we might have to add a upper level prospect. If they prefer Reyes or Renfroe, then we might not have to add a prospect.

This is a copy from the SP thread, but I think it is more fitting in this thread with a couple of adds.

How about a different thought (and against my post earlier) what if Allen is the key to this offseason. He had a really good hitting season at the Wolf which is not a great hitters park IIRC, and the reports are his defense is improving quite well. So what if we did trade both Hedges (glove, limited bat) and Mejia (bat, limited glove at this time) in packages that netted us both Kluber and Realmulto. There are always veteran catchers that are able to be that back up/mentor "Crash Davis" players looking to get another year in the bigs and catch 50-60 games. We know that Allen is AAA this year, and 2020 should have nothing left to prove in the MiL. So 2020 you could have JTR RH bat, and Allen LH bat on the 25 and he could learn in the last year of JTR. Then you could hand over the reigns to Allen in 2021 and sign a Jeff Mathis type to be the back up in 2021.

So lets say that Margot-Renfroe/Reyes-Yates-Baez nets you Kluber.

Lets say that Mejia-Luchessi/Lauer-Morejon-Quantrill nets you Realmulto.

Then Nix-Kennedy-Naylor nets you Cobb from BAL.

Then we sign Moose for 3B, a LH bat and we are RHH heavy, for 2 years with an club option for a 3rd based on the progress of Potts. Then we need a RHH CF to pair with Jank who I am more than fine with against RHP. Maybe a reunion with C Maybin who can hit LHP to a .299/.347 line and can still go get it in CF IMO.

So 2019 runs out a team to start the season until Tatis of :

1. Jank/Maybin - CF

2. Urias - SS

3. Hosmer - 1B

4. Realmuto - C

5. Moose - 3B

6. Kinsler - 2B

7. Myers - LF

8. Reyes/Renfroe/Cordero - RF

And rotation of Kluber, Luchessi/Lauer, Cobb, Mitchell, Strahm.
