Offseason Thread

I really think highly of Stroman, but I’m with you mr.padre. The thought of dealing Baez or Allen for Stroman doesn’t make me feel good. I could live with Lauer, Nix, Quantrill. If the Pads deal with the Jays for Stroman I would like to see Branden Drury included. Maybe something like Lauer, Quantrill or for Stroman and Drury?

I just realized that despite the fact I really want something to happen the idea of losing prospects isn’t too exciting.

When I saw the negotiations for Stroman involved Baez and Allen it knocked my excitement level down. But you gotta trade somebody.

It just reminded me how much I “don’t” want to lose these prospects we’ve been so excited about.

NO Kidding....I have been saying this all off season....making trades just to make a trade is just stupid unless it's the 1st leg of 3 or 4 legs down the road.....Baez and Allen for Stromen.....No Way

For the record it wasn’t Baez AND Allen for Stroman.

It is rumored to be a deal in which those two are being discussed.

Totally agreed on the 4/5 for 1 rubbish. It takes a team to win and we'll NEVER find out what we have until management gets these kids to SD.

Give them time. We're obviously in no rush. Let Myers play 3rd, let Kinsler play 2nd, have Tatis and Urias become the next Trammel and Whitaker, bringning them together at mid season. Give Hedges and Mejia all the possible opportunities to succeed. Let Reyes and Renfroe get 500 AB's. Create a 2 headed monster in CF with Margot and Jankowski.

And let the young guns GO FOR IT! Lucchesi, Lauer, Strahm, Erlin, Perdomo, Nix,..............give them multiple starts. I don't want to see stop gaps.

Add me to the NO on trading top prospects for one ML player. Think that is a strategy for a team with a quality ML core needing a veteran to get them directly to the playoffs ... Padres in 2019 are not that club.

=======

Did go and look at Stroman's 2018 ... he had DL for both blisters and (this is concerning) shoulder fatigue. He started 2018 badly ... and a short good period mid-season ... the fell apart again in August - September before being shut down in September. Based on that 2018 profile ... only 2 years control and $9MM in 2019 .... would not give any  MLB Top 100 prospect ... probably not even a Padre Top 30.

OK some more fodder for speculation (this one is very unlikely to bear fruit). MLBTradeRumors suggests that the LAD are seeking an impact RHH (preferably at C or 2B) while restating the cost for Realmuto is still too high. They then go on to present a laundry list of options via trade / FA ... and Wil Myers' name was included (writer's speculation) as an option. Assuming this is just not a LAD tactic to influence the negotiations with Harper, is it possible they would pursue Myers over the other alternatives? Consider:

1. LAD are a bit LHH oriented so a RHH makes sense

2. LAD LOVE to mix and match player RHH/LHH and move around the field ... e.g. Bellinger CF/1B, Taylor CF/INF, Turner 3B/2B .... Myers (above the other options except Marwin Gonzalez) has ML experience at 1B/3B/LF/RF/CF which fits the LAD's style perfectly.

3. Andrew Friedman would be making the call ... he was in TB (as I recall) when TB acquired Myers but was gone by the time TB traded Myers (think I have that right) ... so maybe he likes Myers skills / potential.

4. Dave Roberts coached Myers in 2015 ... so maybe he likes Myers

Enough points to make this remotely POSSIBLE.

For the Padres the would clear the corner OF jam ... clear $64MM in payroll over the next 4 years (assuming the LAD take the contract) ... and add some more prospects (don't see ML players in play). Padres would have to have a lot of trust in Renfroe - Reyes - Cordero for the future but beyond the prospects added ... frees future payroll to better make adds that fit needs.

0.000000001% chance of even going beyond the speculation piece BUT ............

As much as it would be nice to free ourselves of Wil's contract, I'd really like to see him give it a go at 3rd.

I realize he didn't show too terribly well there last year but if he's had an offseason worth of instruction, I certainly believe he can become a serviceable defender at the hot corner.

Given his youth, speed, and power, again, I think management owes it to the fans/organization to see if he can cut it. No more taking on bad money or eating someone elses dollars. If we're as heavily stocked as we think we are, let it ride!

Windsor.....THAT is exactly what I've been talking about...if the minors produce at a 50-60% success ratio the Padres will be in a really good place with a club that can contend for years to come...I posted before...could we have the potential for a Glavine, Avery, Smoltz and Maddux type pitching staff down the road ?

Now is NOT the time to get crazy and do 4 or 5 for 1

Hey Fenn....Glad to see somebody else is taking a long view of what we could have....I'm not a fan of taking on another teams damaged goods as there is a reason those teams are "willing" to talk trade

3finger, I’m with you and excited about the possibility of having young aces and impact bats  come through the system. I don’t think I’ve made my position clear. AJ has built something special with this farm system. There are top tier prospects I don’t want to see the Padres part with even for a guy like Thor. Tatis Jr, Gore, Paddack, Urias, Morejon, Baez, Patino, Espinoza, Lucchesi, Reed, comprise my list of keepers. I think Logan Allen, Quantrill, Lauer, Nix, Lawson have varying degrees of value on the trade market now and won’t be a big part of the Padres future due to having more talented guys ahead of them. Say 60 percent of Prellers prospects pan out, that leaves 40 percent that gave you nothing when they at one time held significant  value. I don’t think the Padres will be World Series contenders in 2019, but I would like to see improvement and a step or two in the right direction. The Giants are ancient, the Dbacks appear to be selling off pieces and the Rockies are a team with  flaws. If the Padres can add impact bat and some rotation help, I don’t think it’s out of this world to think they could be playing some meaningful games in July and August. I can’t think of anything better than the young kids like  Tatis Jr, Urias and Paddack playing in some meaningful big league games in late summer.
