Listened to a Green interview ... nothing of note (just like Preller) but more reading between the lines on my part:

Hedges will be the starting C and although they love Mejia's arm and bat to ball skills, he needs development as a catcher (a chance he starts in AAA) but clearly they see his future at catching.

They are talking to Galvis ... Galvis is still checking the market.

Consistent with Preller, they still see Myers as a highly versatile player for multiple positions and suggests Myers is OK with that .... not ruling out a return to 3B.

=====

side note: I am getting a bit frustrated with their approach to Myers. Just because you want a player to be versatile (and good at all the positions) ... even if the player is OK with the approach ... does not make a good versatile player. Basically trying to put that square peg in a round hole. That approach is making the Padres team worse and probably hurting Myers hitting and overall value (to the team or in a trade). RF-CF-1B-LF-3B in his short stint with the Padres would be a problem for any player unless the player is built for that ... Myers is not. Put him in LF (his best position) or lock him down at 3B and let him develop but stop the madness.

=====

With little going on and most indications is that Myers has no team interested ... beginning to think Renfroe has less trade value than we would think. End state: Renfroe LF - Myers 3B is beginning to move much higher as a probability.

Anyone really know what is going on with TB ... they seem to be getting linked to some old, expensive (but good) bats (remember AL with DH). Apparently, they have (and are willing to spend) after a very good season in 2018.

Linked to Cruz (FA), Encarnacion, Santana (not Myers). Maybe a ripple effect if the deal for Santana or Encarnacion a team get salary relief while creating a hole at DH. Double ripple effect is that Cleveland is interested in Santana if they move Encarnacion (I am really confused). Taking this daisy chain to the next level IF Seattle clears Santana for salary relief COULD the deal Seager (I know not loved by many) to the Padres for Myers ... they save more money in 2019 for a couple million more over the full deal for an extra year of control.

Few like Myers and his contract ... few like Seager and his contract ... dollars overall are not far apart but Seager is a plus plus defense 3B / LHH / power and Myers is ??????

Rule 5 tomorrow ... Padres need some SS/2B options (if nothing more than insurance against injury) ... full 40 man roster (for now) ... prediction:

one of the teams drafting ahead of SD will select either SS/2B Richie Martin (23, AA) ... quality glove coming off a decent offensive season ... OR Drew Jackson (25, AA) coming off a decent offensive season.

Padres will trade someone off the 40 man roster to open a spot (not necessarily to the selecting team) and if not them deal a minor league body for the Rule 5 selection.

Padres get an insurance policy at SS/2B going into ST and maybe a decent back-up during the season.

Pretty odd to see a story like this on basically the last day of the Winter meetings and not see the Padres even mentioned.

Right?

I’m guessing after seeing the return the Nats got for Roark that AJ simply wasn’t interested.

Orioles have made Alex Cobb available.

I'm kinda "Meh" on him but I mention it because he should come pretty cheap depending on the amount of

salary the O's are willing to eat.

Still "only" 31 and had a real good second half last season.

Finally a trade of some substance ... but confusing unless (until) the follow up deals are made (announced).

Seattle sends Santana to Cleveland (Cleveland did really want him back)

Cleveland sends Encarnacion to Seattle and a Comp Pick plus Seattle saves money (unless they have yet to announce some cash considerations) but they have to pay Encarnacion more than Santana in 2019 but escape Santana's 2020 obligation ... again elimination any longer commitments. Seems as though Seattle did OK.

=====

Cleveland deals Diaz (3B) and a PTNL to TB for Jake Bauers (1B / LHH). Makes little sense for either team on the surface.

=====

As of now Cleveland has Bauers / Santana / Alonso for DH / 1B ... so would not have Diaz (who is 3B/OF) been more valuable to Cleveland in 2019?

TB adds a 3B ... they have Duffy for 3B and he had a 2.4 WAR last year ... but now a bit short at 1B / DH.

======

Rumor is the Encarnacion may move from Seattle to TB for ????? which would save even more money in Seattle and solve TB DH issue for 2019.

How could SD benefit .... 3 3B (Duffy, Seager, Diaz) for two slots in TB and Seattle setting a trade match?

TB could flip either Diaz or Duffy to SD (depending on the ML return piece) OR TB could send either Diaz or Duffy to Seattle for Encarnacion and Seattle could flip either Diaz or Seager to SD (depending on the return).

Diaz (cheap with 6 years control); Duffy in arbitration (2 years control); Seager (expensive with 4 years of control). Can't see TB dealing Duffy ... so Diaz to Seattle (meets Seattle's payroll requirements) and likely someone they would keep. So SD deals with Seattle for Seager?

Had decent numbers in TAM and getting out of the AL East wouldnt hurt. Would look into a Myers for Cobb trade, Myers would kill it in BAL launching pad. Small LF for him to cover. Throw in a MiL SP and split the cash difference between Myers and Cobb, and I think it would be a win/win for both teams.

Not sure on Cobb ... he was bad both Home and Away at age 31 with a 3 year contract the gamble is too steep ... doubt they want to take on Myers (and his contract) since the are "stuck" with 1B/DH types already in Mancini, Trumbo, and Davis and Trumbo / Davis are expensive. Lost 120 games so bet they shoot for a contract dump on Cobb for minor league prospects and work on a rebuild for the next 3-4 years.

If they can't get the contract dump for prospect ... maybe they are better off to find out if Cobb can rebound with them and then deal him at the trade deadline when his value is up.

In a similar vein ... as of now reports say that the NYY are asking high for Gray in the terms of ML talent as a return.
