Just saw that DET has signed SS Mercer for about $5.75M, so he is slightly better offensively than Galvis, with Galvis having the better glove. So unless a better option comes along, I say resign Galvis to a 2 year deal, with a 3 year option and let him cover SS until Tatis is ready, and then he can slide over to 3B and occasionally spell Urias at 2B.

I would imagine that the deal could look like, 2019 - $10M, 2020 - $6M, and 2021 - $4M with a $1.5M buyout.

Would we play Galvis at 3b for most of a season?

No, I'd keep him at SS & have Tatis play 3B... then we've "found" FENN's 3B 🙂

I have a feeling AJP has a plan B of Gray SP Franco 3B and Galvis SS... and at the moment is trying to upgrade those or other areas (Plan A)... obviously I think SP = 2 at least this offseason.

Kilkuchi (January 4 deadline or goes back to Japan per postin rules) is still in play for Pads... Kluber can be had and such a deal could add Kilpnis 2B.. if so Kilpnis at 2B -- Urias at SS (until Tatis Jr comes up) then Urias to 2B/Tatis Jr SS and Kilpnis/Garcia backup all IF spots... But we will see

If we do trade for a TOR arm... I think Kluber is who I want... 3 yrs of control (reasonably priced) and a workhorse/proven 200+ IP yr in and out... vs Noah (same control, costs way more in trade assets and cant be counted on for more than 170 IP) ,,, Not to mentioned Kluber would be like a father figure (been there done that, look at the hardware) to the many kid P expected to arrive in SD in 19,20,21

Not much happening so far at these meetings.

Usually stuff has "gone down" by now.

I know i'm anxious for "something" good......Padre related.

Same here!  But dominoes are starting to fall with SP's signing... and  Realmuto just seems like he's going to get dealt there...

I wonder if Pads are waiting in the weeds?   Do they jump in offering Mejia + ? to counter what the Reds are talking about just to gain the asset to then work something else out with either him or Hedges getting traded?  I don't know..... Barnhardt & #17 MLB prospect Trammel would = us trading Hedges AND Mejia; no way!

Bottom line:  I don't think this offseason will be anything like last.  If Realmuto traded, all the other C's will start going fast.  One of the 2 big mega-dogs signs, the other will very quickly after, then other position players & signings, etc.  Don't see it dragging on to just before Spring Training.

Yeah I’m thinking those that lose out on Realmuto will look to the free agents....then Mejia/Hedges may come into play.

Mets say they aren’t trading Thor unless it makes their team better for 2019.

I guess Myers or Renfroe may fit into these plans but other than that we can’t offer much.

Relievers could come into play but I d0nt think we can c0mpete with other interested teams when it comes to “immediate” major league help.

I like Dickerson's return!  He does overlap Josh Naylor in AAA though... unless he's traded 🙂

LF/1B/DH/PH.  MLB caliber bat at least as 4th OF was there...

AAA does have the DH ... so LF/RF/1B/DH .... can handle Dickerson / Cordero (if sent down) / Naylor / and still have an option for a 4th similar player. (note all three a LHH defensive deficient, but LHH is a shortage on the 25 man).

I do like the resigning ... always thought his bat could play in the ML OBP/SLG.

I have no problem with sign Galvis ... but for a lot less than suggested.

Mercer gets 1 year for less than $6MM ... and arguable the better SS (at least statistically). Add that I am not sure of a lot of teams pushing for adding a SS which reduces the demand side. In 2018:

Mercer: wRC+ 85; dWAR 4.8

Galvis: wRC+ 85; dWAR 3.3

Izturis: wRC+ 90; dWAR 13.6

Not a lot of demand ... a "better" SS still out as a FA .... the Mercer comp seems fine .... so sign him for $6MM plus a club option for another $6MM.

When Tatis arrives he will be the SS (and a good chance better defensively than Galvis) then, if needed, Galvis goes to 3B or "super utility" if they find a real 3B.

You know a lot of times the Winter Meetings are used to lay the ground work for something down the road so I would not be to worried if AJ Preller and the rest of the brain trust don't make a trade right now.

I get the sense from talking with people at the meetings that quiet is a good thing as it lets the "shiny" new toy hoopla subside and then some deals get made to fill holes that are team friendly ie;

Starting Pitcher for lower level guys....doesn't have to be a stud just a solid starter ( We saw the big money pitcher in Shields and yes we got Tatis out of that trade deal ) and hopefully Darren Balsley does his magic and we have something

SS - see how the market plays out and maybe resign Steady Freddy Galvis at a fair salary...strong up the middle is one of the oldest axioms in baseball...Catcher, Pitcher, SS, 2B, CF. Depending on how Tatis developes he may be at SS for a bit and Tatis at 3B

3B - A middle of the road 3B to hold the fort until the Cavalry arrives and I'm not talking about the 7th Cavalry....again nothing off the top shelf of even middle shelf UNLESS this is a guy that will be at the hot corner for the next 3-5 years and if Tatis slides to 3B you then have a trade chip maybe

Personally I like the fact that Preller and crew are laying in the weeds and not doing the sound bite game and rumor talk which is usually nothing more than noise of a agent or team trying to inflate the value of their own player trying to ensure a nice haul in a trade.

reminds me of the idea of who is the smartest guy in the room ?

The guy that talks loud and tries to sound like he is or the guy that lets him talk and just smiles.....I get the feeling that AJ Preller is doing more of the smiling 🙂
