Quote from fenn68 on December 12, 2018, 8:41 amUntil the Padres can resolve their INF (more specifically 3B) not really interested in dealing for a SP and giving up a lot for adding a quality pitcher for a losing team. Focus the trade chips (and even overpay) to stabilize 3B for the next 3 years or more.
An INF to start 2019 of Pirela - Urias - Garcia all backed up by Guerra is a recipe for a 120 loss season. Pirela a poor fielding 2B / OF best suited for the bench and one many wanted to DFA, Garcia a utility guy claimed off waiver, Guerra luck to hit .150 in the ML, and Urias as yet unproven playing out of position at SS.
Even then, the OF is filled with Reyes (1/2 year of hitting and poor defense), Cordero (zero ML success hitting, poor defense, and has shown minimal ability to hit LHP, Myers (enough said), and Renfroe (again 1/2 season of strong SLG offset by poor defense and OBP) ... not a winning picture and will be lucky to get two to be successful in 2019. I would added Margot into the mix with his down season in 2018 ... but at least he is a CF who can field ... and Jankowski has at best established himself as a 4th OF for defense.
Why throw away money and trade chip for a build to mediocrity at best?

Quote from fenn68 on December 12, 2018, 8:53 amI expect the Indians might like the proposal from the Cleveland writer but they would like less getting the sea of leftovers from SD for Kluber / Encarnacion. LAD would not since they want to "control" payroll under the extreme top of the luxury tax penalty threshold. Keep in mind that Encarnacion has been only a DH for about 5 years and just prior a 1B/DH ... has not seen regular time at 3B since about 2010. Basically, Encarnacion has no future with any NL team (not at his age, contract, and inability to play in the field). Bad for LAD, bad for SD ... although getting Puig and Verdugo would be good for Cleveland.

Any ideas for a return?
I’d love to see Tyler Nevin come to the Padres.....Phil’s son and my Sons name is Tyler Nevin.
Good hitter but still a couple years away and it looks like he has struggled enough at 3B that they’ve been playing him at 1b.
Colorado backed off this report ... not seeking Myers.

Wow. That is depressing! We just see this fundamentally differently. Pads think they have an above average to all star caliber SS OR 3B in Tatis, Jr. So they need EITHER a SS OR a 3B. No one is questioning that. But there are literally 10 times more options available in FA or Trade for: SS (fewest, but some like Galvis), Utility guy (Marwin Gonzalez, Jurickson Profar), and especially 3B (you personally listed 7 guys). THEY CAN GET "THIS GUY".
Young P's typically take multiple years to reach their ceiling IN MLB AFTER reaching MLB. The chance that Gore is going to be an Ace when he debuts is very low. A FRONT OF ROTATION, 200 IP, 3 year control, "BRIDGE" & MENTOR to young SP's is a much greater need / rarer asset: I can't think of a theoretical possibility beyond Thor, Kluber, & Greinke.
The fact that our MLB assets (Myers contract structure: Indians ARE interested, Mets: C, RH OF) & ability to absorb some dead $ in 2019 make us even POSSIBLE matches for these guys convinces me that this is the route to go instead of a half measure, arrow down guy like Kyle Seager. I'd rather have one glaring INF hole the majority of the year, than 6 OF's for 3 positions and our current rotation of 8-10 #4-5 SP's.
What I hope we do: Big trade for (our) #1 SP, trade for Profar
What I think we'll end up doing: Much lesser trade for Sonny Gray, FA re-sign of Galvis (do think he's ideal mentor for Tatis/Urias)...

Quote from fenn68 on December 12, 2018, 10:43 amSaw the potential interest from Cleveland on Myers .... and exclude any "complicated" deal for Kluber or Bauer .... what would make sense for both teams to move Myers.
Padres: overstocked in corner OF and Myers with the oversized contract would be a good subtracting under the assumption that frees up $20MM / year from 2020-2022 to pursue a player more valuable to the roster (e.g. SP or 3B). Would (should) they deal him to a team that would take his entire contract and just require a minimal player return?
Indians: they want to win now and need OF (probably more than one). If they don't have to give up talent ... might the bite on the contract. Maybe if they look at their total payroll for the next few years (not even assuming other moves):
Encarnacion $21.7MM (2019) ... option declined for 2020
Kipnis $14.7MM (2019) ... option declined for 2020
Martin $3.0MM (2019) ... FA in 2020
Otero $1.5MM (2019) ... FA in 2020
So with no action the Indians' payroll will drop about $41MM after 2019 down to about $96MM.
Myers' contract is on $3MM (2019) which should not be an issue and then jumps to $20MM for the next three years ... Cleveland drops way more than that so that should not be an issue
That is the do nothing scenario for Cleveland .. be we know they are actively trying to move Encarnacion, Kipnis, and Alsonso now to help 2019 payroll plus considering moving Bauer ($11.6MM) or Kluber ($17MM) for an IMPACT bat for now and the future (Verdugo / Puig would lower 2019 and the future). So, could construct a set of moves that significantly improves the Cleveland offense ... longer term ... lower cost.
SD gets out of Myers' contract to deploy somewhere else.

Quote from Booster SD on December 12, 2018, 11:25 amJust saw that DET has signed SS Mercer for about $5.75M, so he is slightly better offensively than Galvis, with Galvis having the better glove. So unless a better option comes along, I say resign Galvis to a 2 year deal, with a 3 year option and let him cover SS until Tatis is ready, and then he can slide over to 3B and occasionally spell Urias at 2B.
I would imagine that the deal could look like, 2019 - $10M, 2020 - $6M, and 2021 - $4M with a $1.5M buyout.

NO I hope. Article on 1 of Pads websites said Pads were getting offers like that for Myers -- i.e. treating his contract as dead $ -- and that Preller/Pads were NOT looking at it that way. While this is "the year" to trade Myers, I would NOT just salary dump the future obligation; better to let him rebuild value and decide at deadline whether to keep or trade him... He's too young, too much upside to do that.
Biggest issue I have with the concept is you weaken one of your MLB areas of strength WITHOUT gaining the (you know my preference) SP that you likely have to trade MLB assets for to get.
I HAVE to circle back to Kluber. His (assuming he qualified for +4MM in 20 & 21) & Myers' AAV's are quite similar, but spread out in a way that's favorable to Cleveland (low 2019). I realize "Wil :)" take much more than Myers, but if we can figure out a way to do it with Kipnis included? Probably something like this a few pages back:
PADS get Kluber & Kipnis & 7.5 MM in 2019
INDIANS get Myers & Yates & any P but Gore or Paddack & Josh Naylor & 7.5 MM 2020-2022 (2.5 MM/yr)
Pads: 13 + 14.5 = 27.5 - 7.5 -3 -3 = Net + 14 MM in 2019. Payroll still 5-6 MM < 100 MM + at least a body/stopgap middle INF.
17.5 + 2.5 Kipnis buyout + 2.5 MM (Myers) =22.5 - 20 - 5.5 (Yates est) = Net - 3.0 MM 2020
18 + 2.5 (Myers) = 20.5 - 20 = Net + 0.5 MM 2021
2.5(Myers) -20 = Net -17.5 MM in 2022
Indians reverse; save big $ in 2019 in exchange for absorbing most of the last year of Myers' contract. Nominal 2020 increase for them insignificant with expiring 2019 contracts.

Alex Dickerson re-signed with the San Diego Padres on a minor league deal. Pirates 3rd round pick in 2011, he missed all of 2017 with a back injury, all of 2018 due to Tommy John surgery. Has played just 95 MLB games, but still has almost three years of big league service time.

Agree. Would just structure slightly differently, maybe 9 MM x 2 + 1-2 MM buyout vs 10 MM. Might even be lower, but seems insulting to go < 7 MM he made last year?

LF/1B/DH/PH. MLB caliber bat at least as 4th OF was there...
