Quote from Booster SD on December 11, 2018, 12:56 pmSo TOR just released Tulo, could he be a possible gap for SS for this year? Small contract with incentives based on PA and/or games played. I know in past interviews he sees himself as only a SS, but wonder if he know will consider 3B. See if he can play SS until Tatis and then slide over to 3B?

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 11, 2018, 1:44 pmHe didn't play at all last year due to his knees.....I'm guessing this release is an indication they don't expect him to ever play again.
Or is there info out there that he "is" healthy?
If he were healthy I'd have no issue with a one year deal.....but it doesn't appear he is.

From my understanding it was bone spurs in the heels after that nasty ligament tear the year prior. He believes he is healthy, but that still needs to be determined. I know there is not a huge SS market, especially for one that has not played since 2017. So hopefully he would be willing to take a MiL contract with an invite to ML Spring, with bonuses for making the roster and other milestones based on health and performance.

Quote from sportwarrior on December 11, 2018, 2:12 pmI certainly wouldn't mind giving Tulo a shot. I wouldn't expect much, but the upside is better than resigning a Galvis or someone similar.

Quote from fenn68 on December 11, 2018, 4:04 pmI don't know much about Tulo as a teammate ... IF he has the attributes of a Clayton Richard or Eric Hosmer and he is willing to come in on minor league (make good deal) might take the shot ... Toronto is on the hook for his entire salary (except for the required signing at league minimum).
No expectations since he is 34 and did not play in 2018 and only 66 games in 2017 and has a history of injury. It would be a no cost gamble but still would have to sign a SS option that can be expected to start every day. Tatis is not likely to be seen until late 2019 at best. Tulo has only ever played SS so an even longer shot he could stay healthy and master 3B at age 34.

Quote from fenn68 on December 11, 2018, 4:13 pmInterview by Preller ... as expected no specifics so some between the lines interpretation for me:
1. His Christmas wish is a middle of the order hitter who can slot in at #3 for the next 4-5 years (good luck). What was interesting is that was the first thing that popped in his head which might give a clue on priorities.
2. He said he "expected" Paddack, Allen, and Quantrill to be starting games for the Padres near the end of 2019. Maybe an indication that adding SP might not be on the horizon.
3. When asked if we should expect any moves during the Winter Meetings ... sort of sidestepped the question and said maybe some minor move on Thursday. Note I believe Thursday is the Rule 5 draft. Could he be positioned to DFA/trade a minor piece off the 40 man and select someone in the Rule 5 (can always give them back) or select someone for another team and deal the selection immediately (happens every year for some). Hopefully the player received is better than the player DFA/traded. At lest something to watch for.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 11, 2018, 4:45 pmAccording to MLB TradeRumors the Rockies may have interest in Myers for 1b?
Any ideas for a return?
I’d love to see Tyler Nevin come to the Padres.....Phil’s son and my Sons name is Tyler Nevin.
Good hitter but still a couple years away and it looks like he has struggled enough at 3B that they’ve been playing him at 1b.

Quote from 3fingersplit on December 12, 2018, 6:17 amHere is a totally out of Left Field idea.....Could Hunter Renfro play 3rd Base ?
He has the arm no doubt and he would be a thumper in the line up and it could open up the clog in the out field....Meyer in Left, Margot / Jankowski in Center, Reyes and Cordero in Right
We tried Meyers there....Villanueva, Spangenberg etc
How much worse could he really be and if he was able to actually play the position then his trade value would go way up
Like I said....totally out of Left Field 🙂
I also like the idea of bringing Galvis back to play SS if nothing else breaks loose...the guy is solid with the glove and if he hits in the 240-260 range with 10-15 knocks he is the bridge to Tatis
1B - Hosmer
2B - Urias
SS- Galvis
3B - Renfro
LF - Meyers
CF-Margot / Jankowski
RF- Reyes/ Cordero
C- Hedges/ Mejia
SP- Lucchesi, Lauer, Lamet, Richard,Strahm,Nix, Kennedy ...whoever makes it out of Spring Traning
Even if the Padres add a starter are they really going to be a 80 win team in 2019 ?
2020 is the year that has been the target

Quote from Booster SD on December 12, 2018, 6:52 amYou are right in the fact that SD is probably not making the big step next year, but a real SP would help in multiple ways. I think that if you are keeping either LF at 3B, that it is best to pursue Myers there. His arm is not as good, however he is used to being on the dirt being a 1B, used to the speed, and really IMO needs time working on footwork and arm slot. Listening to Preller on XM yesterday, Myers might still be an option at 3B. Probably slim, but maybe.

Quote from Booster SD on December 12, 2018, 7:01 amListening to a talking head on XM this morning (cant remember his name, a CLE announcer though) mentioned that in a trade with LAD for Kluber, he wanted both Puig and Verdugo.......SO. Could not SD include both Cordero and Reyes or Renfroe or Myers? He seemed to think that CLE CFer was fine, so no need for Margot. So, Cordero, Reyes/Renfroe/Myers, Luchessi, Stammen/Yates, and Paddock for Kluber and Encarnacion. That eliminates $38M for CLE in payroll this season and $20M next season. SD could afford to take the $20M team option for EE in 2020 if he plays well and makes the bridge to Potts for 2021. Then, you could take a run at Micheal Brantley suggested 3-$45M contract for the OF, big OBP guy. That would give you an OF of Myers, Margot/Jank, and Brantley, with either Renfroe/Reyes as the 5th OF.
