What do you guys think about signing Daniel Murphy?

We need guys who can handle the bat...get On Base.

Very few get on base like he does....especially who are available.

He was fine last year after he got back healthy.

Could he handle 3B?

He could certainly handle 2b if Urias struggles and spell Hosmer at 1B.

Between 3B,2b and 1B I’m sure he could play just about every day.

At his age he would probably accept a 1-3 year deal.

And should we bring back Tyson?

Other SP I hope we consider....

Garrett Richards

Nate Eovaldi

Matt Harvey

Tyson Ross

Murphy will be way over priced for an insurance policy on Urias and a back-up of Hosmer on a team that will not contend in 2019.

He will be 34 in 2019 ... coming off a season where he was paid $17.5MM (as a part time player) .... is a bad fielder at 2B (and has in his entire career only played 83 games at 3B). He can hit and some contender will see more value in him than the Padres will (or should) likely on a one year deal.

I am at the point in the Padres' transition (and roster composition) to avoid any major FA signing .... rather try to work trades. After the FAs depart the roster will be at 42 with at least 6-8 legit prospects ticketed for being added to protect for Rule 5. Sure some "easy DFAs" but might be better served for the future to move some of current 40 man for a combo of new 40 man roster and/or non-roster types. Still focused on a roster that best supports 2020-2022.

I will go with a trade to Cleveland (will be desperate of a RHH low cost OF) .... screams a match for Hunter Renfroe. Cleveland has a 3B "prospect" in Yandy Diaz (27) who is a plus average / high OBP guy with no HR power and a "late" signing out of Cuba. Add Diaz and move Myers to LF (not going to be able to trade him). Probably not a one for one deal (can debate how much more Renfroe is worth) but Cleveland has a number of non-roster prospects that appeal. Diaz not the long term answer but should be better than this year's alternatives and buys time to find out if Potts is legit for 2021.

I would be really be listening to offers on Renfroe (clear out corner OF gut) ... Spangenberg (2 years control) .... Erlin (2 years control) ... Stammen (1 year control) ... and, yes, Yates (2 years control).

Agree on all.  Wonder if PIT would move Moran for Spangenberg and Kennedy or Nix?

CLE is an obvious match up, as you pointed out, and the clubs have heavily scouted each other's talent over the last year or so I'm sure.

Could move Myers if they ate 35-50% of remaining contract.

Still think Mejia is traded for SP in a package before ST.

Doubt the Padres could get Moran from Pitt ... he had a very good season, is low cost, and 5 years control and considering Pitt is a relatively young team with a winning record last season they have to think as a potential contender for the playoffs in 2019. With no clear replacement, can't see Pitt wanting to move him. Also, as a cost conscious organization, his contract allows them to focus money elsewhere.

Could see Mejia moved in a deal but could also see Hedges moved ... might be a buyers choice scenario. (likely neither). Padres were able to get Mejia basically for a very good RP in Hand with a key logic for Cleveland being their need in a pennant race ... would guess in the winter with no sense of urgency by buyers his trade value is actually lower ... especially since he is an unproven commodity as yet and there are alternatives on the FA market. Hedges on the other hand is a proven commodity and elite defense (and still low cost with years of control) should gain a better return from a contender ... and Houston, Washington, and Atlanta may be matches. (note: Houston does not need offense and is managed by a former catcher so?). IF Preller liked Mejia enough to deal for him ... would he be bias to stick with Mejia's POTENTIAL superior hitting at the expense of some defense rather than Hedges?

Would guess that Preller will try to market Myers ... but not eat any (or not at least much) of his contract. (Keep an eye our for Philly as a potential match if Preller just wants to move the salary but without payroll pressure don't expect that is a motivator).

Since I don't see much potential difference in Myers vs. Renfroe in overall on-field production (and both about the same age) .... and Renfroe is coming off a good power season, low cost, controllable I could see a Renfroe trade yielding a better return thus in the bigger picture being better for the Padres down the road. Gives Myers 2019 (which is basically a $6MM contract year) a chance to build some value for a future move. More of a sell high on Renfroe and avoid selling low on Myers.

As always it is about the best return (and net advantage to the Padres) and not moving any specific player ... so sort of indifferent in dealing Myers or Renfroe or Reyes or Cordero as long as the player(s) received outweigh the player lost in the 2020-22 window.

Perception is everything ... this note from MLBTradeRumors about the Phillies owner:

"owner John Middleton once balked at a perceived lack of on-field hustle from former Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis,"

Watched a lot of Padres games last season and can't say that was my perception of Galvis but might explain why they let him go without much of a replacement last season. In context, the piece was about the potential lack of interest by the Phillies in Machado despite having the money given his performance / attitude with the LAD in the WS. Might that send them after Harper instead? Not sure how much Middleton has observed Myers but that could be an issue if Philly is a potential trade partner.

If he thought Galvis lacked hustle he's not gonna like what he sees in Myers.

Although I do defend Myers and his "apparent" lack of hustle.

I think he is just a laid back dude and I would wager he seems "chill" off the field too.

I do hate when "any" player stands and admires a ball they just hit....and he does do this.

Did you see Machado the other night standing and admiring his "line drive" that bounced off the LF

fence for a SINGLE?

Lol

Machado and his "antics" are not something I'd like in S.D.

Of course....I wouldn't want Harper either really...hes a bit brittle and his attitude is also less than appealing.

I'd rather give up the Farm for Mike Trout!

Roster-crunch month begins Friday. The Padres need to reinstate their four 60-day DL guys then. They had a full 40-man, and only two free agents come off the books, so they're going to need to find two roster spots.
=====
So, in some mix, two will be gone ... should not be a problem for Friday. Since this is the "exclusive window" for teams to negotiate with their own FA (Galvis, Ellis) their is an outside chance ... logically with Galvis only ... the Padres strike a deal to avoid his FA and create a need to drop an additional player ... still not a big issue.
=======
The bigger issue (and more "entertaining" for us) will be moves before Nov 20 to accommodate the 6 - 8 prospects needed to be added to protect from the Rule 5. Accommodating that many prospects that are unlikely to contribute to the 2019 ML club while at the same time ensuring enough 40 man roster players to actually provide a ML 25 man roster will be an interesting balancing act.
Would think straight DFA would not be the priority option which may lead Preller to more aggressively try to swing some deals before Nov 20 to clear some roster space .... either for non-roster prospects (Preller has had some success mining prospect with that approach) or 2 roster players for 1 roster player.
This should also put a bit of a crimp on any potential FA signings unless they are signed to minor league make good deals (so more fringe types).
Expect at least a 25-30% 40 man roster turnover by the end of ST.

Realistically speaking what are the odds we sign Kikuchi from japan?

I know Makita is a close friend of his so that may at least help as would being on the West Coast I would think.

But do the Padres have serious enough interest for $15-20 mil posting fees and a possible $100 mil deal?

Or will we lose him to Seattle, the Dodgers or the Angels........or another larger market team  like we always do?
