We don't know what they were asking in return from the Padres so we don't know how many holes they were creating or what their motivation may be.
Maybe they were asking for a guy like Lucchesi or Lauer as well......we only assume it was
Myers/Segura and Leake which I always thought was missing a couple pieces anyway.
They may have had a deal in place to move Healy or Haniger which would really open up the need for Myers.
The Cano deal makes sense as they can just move Gordon back to 2b.
I still think the M's aren't done even after this Cano deal...just not sure it will involve us.

I'm OK with Leake as an innings eater and to help solidify the rotation for a couple seasons.
Also allows us to work "the kids" in as we see fit instead of by necessity.
But I "really" want Segura.
Always have.....hoping AJ makes it happen without losing anything "too" significant.

Mets were interested in Indians Yan Gomes....but looks like he is going to the Nats.
So maybe the Mets are even more interested in Hedges/Mejia?
Will this help make a Thor deal more of a possibility?
Not only missing out on Gomes but he's going to a Division rival.

Sure seems to keep lining up for a match with the Padres ... a number of national types always drop them in as a prime candidate to get Thor (if the Mets deal him). A comment this morning suggested the Mets are more bias to go the trade route to fill their needs than the FA route ... a way to "control" their payroll by not paying premium for a C like Granda or CF like Pollock.
At the core the consensus seems to start with Hedges and Margot then a prime SP prospect ... that one can surely be hotly debated but given the Mets only have one year with Wheeler and Vargas maybe be overpriced to have his option picked up next winter ... likely that prospect is one that could fit in for 2020 (or late 2019 if needed). So, maybe one of Lauer, Lucchesi, Paddack, Allen ... a bit longer shot Quantrill or Nix. They really don't have much near term pitching in their farm. Even as good as Syndergaard is (but only for 3 years) and the Padres need 5 quality starters going forward ... I would balk on Paddack and Allen being included .... would love them to take Quantrill maybe with a 4th piece to seal the deal. I could be convinced on Lauer or Lucchesi but would prefer to use one of them in another deal for a 3B/SS.

The two years of Leake would be a decent placeholder and it taking him allows the Padres to get Segura for less in terms of prospects should work. Taking both would be a $90MM pick-up if Seattle did not kick in some money ... there are formula that will translate the projected WAR for Segura and Leake into dollar "value". Guessing the "value" is less than the dollar contracts which makes the case for less going to Seattle.
Also, looking at the prospect return Seattle is taking in the Cano / Diaz deal they are not near ML ready .... Bruce and Swarzak are just salary shifts to offset some of Cano's contract.
If the Padres will take the money ... might get away without including any prime prospects.

I will resurface another INF option ... Senzel (3B prospect with CINN and ML ready). CINN is pretty set in their INF but have just non-tendered Billy Hamilton (CF) and are a bit short on SP plus they are pushing (like the Padres) to start winning ASAP.
IF Margot does not go in a Thor deal and the Segura deal is not working .... Margot to CINN for Senzel might work for both clubs (maybe some other pieces). Padres left with Jankowski / Cordero for CF BUT would not be surprised to see them under that circumstance the Padres signing Adam Jones on a 1 or 2 year deal ... price should be comparatively low given his age and diminished skills.
If Margot goes for Thor ... maybe CINN like Cordero plus a pitching prospect ... Senzel is a prime prospect.

IMO Padres couldn't possibly be better positioned to play the Mets (Thor) & the Indians (Kluber) off against each other: both teams now need exactly the same things: MLB C, MLB OF, MLB/ready controllable SP. HAS to have the effect of driving the price down for the Pads since each team knows they lose the opportunity to fill multiple MLB holes if Pads deal with the other.
I realize Kluber has the pedigree & durability, but he's 6 years older, vastly more mileage on arm & much more expensive in 2019.
If the Pads can pull a deal for Syndergaard without giving up Paddack I'd be SO psyched (also think Yates holds more value as a standalone than 1 of 4 pieces), but think I'd be willing to go UP TO:
Kluber: Hedges, Lucchessi (or any LHP but Gore), Renfroe, prospect < top 100 MLB (#11+ our system/"50" grade)
Thor: Hedges, Paddack, Margot, Yates OR young MLB RP OR prospect > top 50 MLB (#7+ our system/"55" grade). We take back Juan Lagares to backfill RH CF & eat salary (Mets save roughly 10 MM in 2019)
Which would you guys pick?

The Reds aren't trading Senzel and nobody among the 20+ teams interested in pitching from the Mets and Indians is in a position to 'play them off against each other.'

Actually don't see the match that everyone else sees between the Mets or the Indians ... except for position. Both will be seeking some significant offensive add ... Hedges / Margot are not that.
More likely both Kluber and Syndergaard are not dealt to anyone ... let alone the Padres (and I am good with that).
Mets are probably trying to work a bigger deal that lands Realmuto and would fall back with signing Grandal or Ramos ... CF is not that critical a need.
Cleveland is tossing out all their SP as options so for now an impossible mix and match analysis where they could solidify their catcher / OF without dealing Kluber. Kluber to LAD is possible but think LAD may balk if the asking price focuses on Verdugo (immediate plus to the OF) and another Top 100 prospect.
As for Senzel ... very very unlikely UNLESS they secure a long term extension with Gennett ... that would lock down their INF for years. Moving Senzel to CF (as rumored) has the makings of Myers in CF ... they do (and will need) pitching so wouldn't go zero chance. On the other hand, if they trade Gennett, then think zero chance.

Or Myers/Mejia?
Those options would be decent upgrades offensively for the Mets I would think.
