AAA LHH 3B ... 25 .... basically a AAA body to fill out the EP roster. Unlikely to be seen in SD. Some power but not much of a hitter in the minors.

The Padres have designated righty Colin Rea for assignment along with infielders Cory Spangenberg and Allen Cordoba, the club announced. San Diego also designated Christian Villanueva, whose contract rights will be sold to a Japanese club.

Meanwhile, the Friars completed a busy day of 40-man roster maneuvering by adding a host of players. Catcher Austin Allen, infielder Ty France, outfielder Edward Olivares, and righties Pedro Avila, Anderson Espinoza, Chris Paddack, and Gerardo Reyes will all be protected from the Rule 5 draft.

Dropping BOTH Spangenberg and Villanueva is a bit surprising ... Rea and Cordoba not a big surprise unless (as I am) that Guerra / Asuaje survived. Now we really have to focus on 3B (France probably is not ML ready).

A outfield of Renfro, Reyes and Margot playing most of the time and not splitting at bats could only be a good thing with Jankowski in the mix. Villanueva was a terrible 3rd base and had big holes in his swing and once teams learned how to pitch him he was not a factor in the long term plans. The trick now is to figure out who can play 3rd base...solid defense and average bat and power ( 240-250 average with 10-15 HR ) would be wonderful

Spangenberg was versatile but he changed his game to try to elevate the ball for the Home Run, I blame Matt Stairs for that, and it cost him a spot on this team. He was never going to be a Home Run guy and his game was line drives and use his speed.

Cordoba was lost in the injury and numbers game and Colin Rea is just another pitcher that has had a one promising career cut short or derailed by injury

Guerra and Asuaje are not going to hit at this level but maybe one of them could see time at 3rd if they don't have other options

Did not help his cause that he was a below average fielder at both 2B/3B ... only had two control years ... and was going to get about $2MM in arbitration. Looks like adding Garcia (lower cost, 3 years control, can play SS) is what finished off Spangy.

I would absolutely include more to get it done, and would absolutely do it.  Sport, if M's balk, another way to structure the deal is to give less in prospects but take more in $ i.e. Felix.  Bottom line on King Felix is trading him would be like Pads trading Tony Gwynn or Trevor Hoffman; no dice UNLESS HE wanted it....  but I was on the right track

I really hope it happens.  Offense needs more Seguras!

Reports are that Seattle has contacted both players about waiving no trade clauses .... yes, they both have FULL NO TRADE CLAUSES. So, maybe SD and Seattle are close in determining the players in play BUT getting both Segura and Leake to waive their contracts usually comes with an added cost to the buyer assuming they are willing to leave Seattle and / or join the Padres (never know what players think). Usually, that issue is resolved with more money ... both have "option years" at the tail end of their deals that they may want made permanent or just a a "modification" to their base contract (bonus to waive the no trade or a revised "larger" contract).

Tough to get just one player to waive a no trade clause but two in the same deal would he some heavy lifting ... but possible. If it is just Leake that is holding up the deal and not Segura ... might just see a different mix of players or dollars.

San Diego is his hometown, PLUS the Mariners are obviously trending toward rebuild while the Padres are headed in the opposite direction. Plus he's already waived it once when he headed from St Lous to Seattle, so why not again for his hometown?

The only no trade clause we'd need to be concerned with is Segura, and he probably sees the writing on the wall as well.
