Outside chance the Segura idea could be reality (along with the Myers exodus) from Ken Rosenthal:

Padres want trade for Myers in which money is almost even.

Myers owed $64M next 4 years. Segura (3 years) and Leake (2) owed combined $79.75M. Segura could play SS for Pads until Tatis is ready, then move to 2B. Tatis also has played 3B. Deal at moment not thought to be close.

=====

focus on the not close part and no idea who pitched the rumor to Rosenthal ... guessing the Padres given the first line.

I would do it ... Segura at SS for the next 4 years (5 in the option is exercised) and Tatis locking down 3B for the next 7 and Urias locking down 2B for the next 6 years. Add that Hosmer will be around for 4 more years (likely to exercise the opt out at that point). Basically could be a plus plus INF for the next 4 years minimum.

Padres pick up some extra cost but I would expect that Padres would need to add some prospects to make this work (not elite but decent).

Good fodder for speculation.

And according to Rosenthal, SD is also getting Leake in the deal as well. He is good for 200 innings and with a little Balsley magic and pitching in Petco he could be a couple of ticks above average. Preller, pull the trigger on this one ASAP!

I would easily trade Myers for Segura/Leake. You essentially move Myers' 110ish OPS+ from the twilight zone into the SS position.

I would not, however, trade for Segura in the proposed deal from the last page. We absolutely do not need Felix Hernandez soaking up roster space and money, especially for someone like Renfroe or Reyes or Gabby Arias. Sheesh.

Per MLBTR, Villanueva's contract has been sold to a team in Japan pending his approval.

Could the Villanueva deal mean that the trade for Segura May be probable?

Or completely non relevant to that deal?

It’s a bit odd to lessen our options at 3B without something else happening for sure.

I would jump all over a Myers for Segura / Leake deal if I were the Padres. I would expect the Mariners are holding out for more ... hard to tell how much more and how much more would the Padres go.

Seattle may want to bolster catching for the future (Allen or Torrens) ... not Hedges / Mejia from the Padres perspective. Maybe a SP at the level of Perdomo, Diaz, Kennedy, Nix to close the deal ...

I have always been bullish on Segura......wanted to acquire him back when the Brewers offered him up....

Speed + OBP is a Mr P kinda guy.

Probably not related to that possible deal being likely, but likely related to the Padres going full bore on changing out the 3B options. Since (baring a surprise) Tatis is a mid-season add, so adding Segura would still leave a short term hole at 3B (unless you like Spangy).

Need 40 man roster room .... Villanueva is a limited asset (3B/hits only LHP) with no long term value ... drop him and protect the prospect for the future.

So if we get Segura is Tatis automatically our 3B?

This is the thinking in making this deal I assume?

Or If Urias struggles Segura goes to 2b and Tatis at SS.

Or does Urias have the ability/arm strength for 3B. However, I believe that it boils down to Tatis - 3B, Segura - SS, and Urias - 2B.
