OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 14, 2023, 7:10 amQuote from fenn68 on December 14, 2023, 4:10 amIF the Padres don’t see Marsee in CF … might they make Kevin Kiermaier their #1 priority?
LHH (a need) … excellent defense … the better offensive option of the FA (ex Bellinger) … hard to see a low cost quality CF via trade.
Projected on a 2 year / $20MM contract ($10MM AAV) … that probably means it will be at least a $12MM AAV .. or nearly half of the money the Padres have to deploy. Problem may be he is waiting for the Bellinger deal to come down and hope the losers in the Bellinger race fall back to him and raise his total contract value.
Then go lower end for the other two OF slots (if Marsee is not one of them) … Profar would be good and should be a low cost sign that can cover both OF/INF. Still money left for an OK OF option.
Betting on the sea of current arms being good enough for the #4-5 SP. RP is so low on my priority rank that not even going there.
I just don't see them spending more than what Grisham would have cost on another glove first option. Kiermaier is better when healthy. I don't think he's worth double what keeping Grisham would have cost. I think it's Marsee or a trade. Maybe they can bring in a low cost veteran like Aaron Hicks or take a flier on someone like Kyle Lewis to support Marsee.

With what the Duds just did with Shohei, I imagine every player is available to every team? Obviously the players will have to sign off on deferring monies but if you're guaranteed say $200 million from 2032 to 2042, you're getting your money regardless.

The key is Marsee … and I am beginning to believe (based on nothing) that the Padres see him to be a better overall CF asset with long term value at less cost.
Probably why they were OK with trading Grisham (maybe just tired of sub-200 hitting) and may have needed him included in the trade to get the final pitcher added.
If so, that basically shifts the targets to use my $25MM. Sign Profar as the 4th OF/super utility and still over $20MM to deploy on a more productive (than any of the CF candidates) LF and SP.
Depending on the candidates on the FA market … probably could be fine with a $10MM LF(DH) and a $10MM SP for the #4 slot. Shuffle that a bit and go $8MM / $12MM.
I would not spend any money on “protection” of Marsee as a CF … just takes away from filling the other holes. Sometimes just have to gamble on the player and be OK with Azocar / Tatis / or whomever you sign for LF to cover as necessary.
So the entire season rest on Marsee’s ability to hit .225 and play quality CF?

Don’t hold your breath on the Padres being in. First, Boras will drag this out to the last moment for the highest offer and deferred money or not … other teams are better positioned to pay the freight. Second, just my speculation, the LAD were able to pull the Ohtani deal off because of their overall financials while SD reported has their issues and that might preclude them from playing the same game.
Then add my view that the Padres would actually hurt the future with another BIG - LONG TERM contract with a no trade provision that Boras will demand. Eight big, long term and Eighteen league minimum deals probably yields a mediocre team in the near term and could spell disaster in 3+ years with aging / injuries.

Quote from fenn68 on December 14, 2023, 8:57 amQuote from MrPadre19 on December 14, 2023, 6:58 amI've been arguing hard for a trade with Miami for pitching since this time last year....but,they've had so many injuries to their Starters I'm thinking they will be very reluctant to trade one this off season.
Probably rather find a low end SS rather than give up Garrett or Cabrera....and would want a kings ransom for Luzardo.
But maybe they will?
May depend on how soon they believe Meyer will be ready.
Ok, another out of the box trade proposal that makes some sense but very unlikely.
Three way deal with SD - MILW - MIA with the idea SD wants a top line SP, MIA wants a SS, and MILW wants to shed money / get prospects
SD trades Kim ($8MM/1 yr) to MIL for Burnes ($15.1MM / 1 yr)
MILW trades Adames ($12.4MM / 1 yr) to MIA for prospects and saves a net $19.5MM with the two deals.
Basically a trade of rentals the covers everyone’s wants.
SD only goes up $7.1 MM for a TOR SP still leaving around $18MM for the other slots .. basically CF / LF / 1B (DH) … middle INF goes to Bogaerts / Cronenworth. Then if Marsee and/or Merrill step and they sign Profar low cost … a lot of payroll space for one more impact bat.

I like this idea, works for all teams IMO. Use that $18M for Profar, Duvall, and Pederson. Between those 3, Marsee, and Carpenter, you can have L/R coverage for LF, CF, 1B, and DH. Plus with Azocar, have a late inning defensive replacement if needed.

Quote from lafnboy13 on December 14, 2023, 12:11 pmI might be flying solo on this take but hear me out. The only real pressure to compete is coming because of the presumed hot seat Preller in. I think this is a mulligan year to right the ship financially and to bring back a throwback "Let the kids play!"

The only caveat to that is a thought to win for Siedler this season.
In all honesty, no matter what Preller does this season, it will probably be a lost season.
So field the most competitive team we can, reset the penalties, and let the kids develop. And then tackle 2025.

We, the fans, may want to win it for Seidler but without the current stewards backing that concept with cash then it's just a romantic notion without business backing.
