OFFSEASON 2023-24

According to Andy Martino, the NYY and SD have progressed far enough in trade talks to start exchanging player names. With SD asking for players such as Dominguez, Volpe, King, and Schmidt.

I did a suggested trade yesterday of Cortez, Schmidt, and Pereira for Soto as well yesterday.

I dont understand the Volpe ask, unless he becomes the major piece in getting Cease from CWS.

Would you pull the trigger on the following trade.

Soto, Grisham, and Carpenter to NYY for Cortez, Schmidt, and Pereira?

No if the return is Cortes (29, 2 years control, ERA 4.5), Schmidt (27, 4 years control, ERA over 4.00) and Pereira not showing his is ML ready in the OF. Frankly in 2024 a very good chance Grisham is more valuable that Pereira. Have to be able to find a better return from NY or another team … that would just be a giveaway.

I would bet one of Hampton, Thorpe, Warren (all top prospects, league minimum, 6 years control) could deliver the same performance as either Schmidt or Cortes but with upside.

As for asking about Volpe the strategy may be ask for multiple of their “better prospects” knowing they will not get them all BUT in the negotiations one may fall through the cracks … so maybe ask on Volpe and get Dominguez … or a stronger set of prospects in the four player return. Just negotiations.

Cortes with two years of control, understand.

Schmidt, you used to suggest him, whats changed your opinion of him? However a 4.0 ERA in the AL East is not bad at all really, even Snell had a 3.40 ERA in the AL East, and that was aided by a outlier 1.89 ERA in his Cy Young year.

Pereira only got 100 ABs last season in ML, so way too little to make a judgement. However his MiL numbers suggest a good blend of power and speed, along with a very good OBP.

The pieces may get tweaked a little, but maybe close.

I was in on Pereira and would take Schmidt … not so much Cortes BUT I would not consider any of them impact lead pieces in a return … so while the individuals have some appeal (maybe as the #2 or #3 in a deal) collectively they fall way short of a good return.

NYY have better and should be willing to move those better parts. The one good aspect of the Padres and Yankees exchanging names gives the impression of a deal could be close … and then maybe some other team (SEA???) gets more engaged and becomes a legit party to a trade along with boosting the return.

In the end, Preller deals when he thinks all the alternative deals are on the table and he takes whichever.  Do think that will play out quickly before the Winter Meetings.

Now if the NYY offer Pereira, Schmidt, Cortes AND a premium prospect (e.g. Dominguez or Jones or Thorpe or ….) that might push the deal over the top.

What were they talking about beforehand? Exchanging names seems like it would be the key component of trade talks. I'm not sure how that is a sign of progress. That just seems like another lazy report from the NY media to me.

Could be a step from general discussions of who may / or may not be in play (from both sides) … the “level” of return Preller would want … then this may be the next step in putting specific names in combination for a deal.

Once Preller has an idea of who is in play from initial discussions … he goes back to his scouting folks to make “final” evaluations of the options and what combo(s) give them the return they are OK with.

So if they can’t get Dominguez … who in the Padres mind is an equivalent value as a return piece and build around that. We may like A over B … guessing Preller has value judgements on all the players and just needs a combo of parts that meets his valuation of Soto.

Sort of if Soto is valued at “10” by Preller … and Dominguez is a “6” need to fill out the rest of the deal to total “4” (or more).  If Dominguez is out of the discussion and replaced by Jones who may be a “5” they shift the other parts with a better player substitute .

Also keep in mind that, from a foundational standpoint, it's quite different to receive a trade offer with names attached than it is to ask for specific names. To my mind, that's a news/note worthy escalation over simply listening to potential offers with clubs at large.

Some excerpts from the report in question. So they've exchanged names he just doesn't know which names. The asking price is high and the Padres probably want top young talent. Absolutely nothing of substance in my opinion. Anyone could write that report.

Talks between the Yankees and the San Diego Padres about a Juan Soto trade have progressed to the point of exchanging names on players, league sources say. San Diego’s initial ask was very high -- understandably so -- and the teams are not close to an agreement.

While the exact names are not known, the Padres are said to be looking at top prospects/rookies like Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe, young major league pitchers in the Michael King/Clarke Schmidt category, and more. That is standard behavior at the beginning of trade talks for a superstar player. It was also standard behavior for the Yankees to say no, but want to keep talking.

Rosenthal has a MLBTR piece on fits for Soto ... not trade predictions per se but just the logic for a fit.

6 "best fits": Blue Jays; Cubs; Mariners; Rangers; Red Sox; and Yankees. He sort of identified a need / want along with the payroll that could handle the salary (at least by some logic). No suggesting of any return pieces.

5 "next level": Angels: Braves; Mets; Orioles; Phillies. Not likely but not out of the question.

The 6 best fits should be the best speculation candidates ... Rangers were a bit of a surprise given their offense and winning with that offense in 2023. Doubt that one pans out. Don't see the Red Sox having the trade assets to outbid the others. We have speculated recently on the Yankees and the Mariners ... but probably under played the Cubs (that rumor has been in the background for some time) and basically ignored the Blue Jays who at one time I saw as a bidder (especially given their team and how strong they were in the AL East) ... they do have strong pitching (ML and prospects) so maybe a mystery bidder?

Note the competitive AL EAST having the Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays potentially interested should up the return ... Soto benefits the buying team and is kept away from the competition.

Plus just Rosenthal writing this now might suggest he see a trade sooner than later and needs to get an article out before it becomes irrelevant.

Posting this because Dennis Lin retweeted the article, which usually means he's hearing similar.

Earlier Wednesday, SNY’s Andy Martino first reported that the Yankees and Padres had been exchanging names in what could amount to a blockbuster deal for Soto, a 25-year-old lefty hitter who would bring instant power and star power to the heart of the Yankees’ order.

A source tells The Athletic that the Yankees are reluctant to surrender upper-echelon young talent in terms of prospects (such as righty starting pitcher Drew Thorpe) or recently-arrived big-leaguers (such as Jasson Domínguez and shortstop Anthony Volpe).

San Diego is believed to be targeting starting pitching that could help in the majors as soon as next season, and the Yankees could offer righty Clarke Schmidt, who’s currently in New York’s rotation, or righties Will Warren or Chase Hampton — a pair of highly regarded prospects who could reach the majors next season.

The expectation is that any team that lands Soto — if he is, in fact, traded — won’t have much of a chance to sign him to a long-term extension prior to next season, considering his agent, Scott Boras, has a history of seeking the biggest possible contracts for his stars in free agency. MLB Trade Rumors projects that Soto could earn $33 million via his final year of salary arbitration in 2024, and the Yankees are believed to be among the few teams who could absorb that kind of financial commitment in a single player while also offering quality MLB-ready or near-MLB-ready pitching in a deal.
