OFFSEASON 2023-24

I would assume any team that trades for Woodruff would be doing it on the condition that he signs a 2 year deal. He could try to play hard ball and try to force his way to the open market or a preferred situation, but I think Milwaukee will be able to get something for him.

One thought was a team ... with money ... would deal for him now with a non to mid range prospect ... be OK with him missing the half season on the bet he would be himself in the 2nd half for a playoff push, then offer him a QO and if he turns it down get that draft pick (which may be similar to who they gave up). Still a $$$$ gamble.

Yankees picked up 2 OFs from Brewers in ex-Padre Jake Bauers trade.  Prelude to trading a higher ranked OF in a subsequent Soto trade?  Brewers OFs not close to Yankees top OF prospects, but at least adds to minors depth.  Still think Soto to Yankees is the best option for Padres and should be done early in this off-season period before pitching FA that fit their budget or pitchers that might be available in trade within their budget are gone.  Want as many options as possible.

Well we unloaded Barlow and his contract to the Guardians and are bringing back De Los Santos

Seems like a solid cost cutting move to me. Barlow at his best is probably better. Santos is cheaper, has 3 years of control and was better than Barlow last year.

The return of Enyel de los Santos!  Padres traded Barlow to Cleveland for him, potentially taking 5-6M off the books.  I always liked de los Santos and his last two years in Cleveland were pretty good.  We got him way back in 2015 for veteran RP Joaquin Benoit and then traded him a couple of years later to Philly for one of those forgettable shortstops who played for the Padres before Tatis, etc. - Freddy Galvis.

De Los Santos is arbitration eligible for the first time this year and under control until 2027.  Fastball in the mid-90's, has a wipeout slider and an average change-up; could be primed for a breakout year in San Diego.  Let's see what Niebla can do with him.

I saw that Nick Senzel was non-tendered. I seem to recall him being brought up as someone they targeted in trade talks years ago. He obviously hasn't lived up to his former top prospect status, but he hits lefties well and can play all over the field. Maybe they'll take another run at him.

I guess for me this is a head scratcher from Cleveland’s perspective … never a team that liked to spend money.

Barlow est $7.1MM with 1 year control

De Los Santos est $1.2MM with 3 years control

Yes, Barlow has the resume of an effective closer but the past two seasons of De Los Santos has been effective in the ML. Somehow does not seem balanced unless the scouting on De Los Santos detects some real flaws that limit his value.

De Los Santos is only about 28 and, when he was in the Padres’ system he was a SP (and decent) and he was converted to the pen after he left. Given the SP quandary with the Padres … think they take a shot at him returning to SP or just long RP (he has no minor league options).

Seems a good Padres move if for no other reason than the $5.9MM saved … and that can be redeployed for a more critical upgrade.

MILW non-tenders Woodruff … a chance for the 2 year contract from the Padres?

Note: only considering the Barlow - De Los Santos move … have the Padres now $25MM under the $200MM cash limit for the 26 man payroll. Plus are about $12MM under the 2024 CBT threshold which would free them for penalties in 2024.

If that $25MM is used for a TOR arm (e.g. Snell, Yamamoto) … can the Padres stand pat with Soto and be a contender?
