OFFSEASON 2023-24

Claimed off waivers from the Cubs 10 days ago. Might be someone to keep an eye on. He hasn't spent much time in the big leagues and struggled in the minors last year. It looks like he was pretty dominant in the minors from 2021-22

Padres have signed Cal Mitchell to a MiL deal. LHH COFer that was a top 30 prospect with PIT. Hit very well in AAA his first time there, and then after a short call up with PIT, which IIRC included a series in SD, did not fair as well in AAA last season, with a big uptick in K's.

I remember thinking he had a nice LH swing, and he is SD native graduating from RB High School. Probably ends up being nothing more than a AAA back up plan.

MLBTR has on piece quoting Heyman the the Padres, Dodgers, and Giants are “interested” in signing Snell … key here is “interested” (who isn’t) but no real sense of level of commitment. In fairness the piece did lay out the need within those three teams vs the counter point of budget or other priority adds (see Ohtani).

So does open a roster design question for the Padres … trade Soto (save $33MM) and get some players in return and sign Snell ($25-30MM) to anchor the top of the rotation with Musgrove and Darvish? Does that make the 2024 Padres a better all around team? Does that help the Padres stay relevant beyond 2024 with the best guess that Soto departs via FA?

Take that another step … make the 3 way trade that lands Burnes from MILW ($15MM) and “saves” $18MM …couple that with the $18MM I have the under … sign Snell ($28MM) and they are still $8MM under the target but with a SP staff of Snell, Burnes, Musgrove, and Darvish … and still have not moved any other key pieces … and retained Barlow, Carpenter, Grisham (combined about $17MM). Maybe get lucky and tie Carpenter to the Soto deal, trade  Grisham / Barlow and then sit with pot at maybe $25MM for the replacements which at that point are maybe a couple of OF and a catcher upgrade. Severely complicated to pull off BUT could be a legit path to the playoffs and beyond.

I like the thought of this!

Somehow creating 2 #1's out of Soto? If Preller were able to pull that off, I'd give him a reprieve from the chopping block.

I imagine we'd have to move someone to Milwaukee in that scenario. Obviously Soto should garner 2 top prospects, but would that be enough for 1 year of Burnes?

I guess if 2 prospects are all that Soto returns, Burnes possibly be the same?

4 Padres got NL MVP votes:

#6 … Soto (106 points) … nothing higher than 5th on any ballot

#13 … Snell (16 points)

#14 … Tatis (5 points) … one 6th place vote

#15 … Kim (5 points) … five 10th place votes

A good sign on the national view of Soto given he was performing on an underperforming team … on most ballots and netting 6th is a good showing.

Also Kim showing up on 5 ballots by itself is great recognition for a guy usually overshadowed by Soto, Machado, Bogaerts, Tatis, Snell, Darvish, Musgrove, Hader.

Wow this guy has been great for his entire minor league career other than giving up a strangely high number of HR balls last year.

Seems like a fluke compared to the rest of his career.

3/1 K/BB ratio and only 86 hits allowed in 117 IP for his career.

Figure out that glitch with the long balls,or maybe he was just unlucky, and could be a great find

Have to wonder why the Cubs put him on waivers. Maybe they noted most of his success was in A/A+ … has not pitched a ton of innings considering he has been around since 2017 … does not have good control … and in 2023 (in AAA) just was ineffective with much to do with control as with the HR.

Fixable … maybe … and a good gamble by the Padres … RP have a history of suddenly going from a non-factor to an impact arm … so?

Interesting MLBTR piece on MILW and Woodruff. One of the best pitchers in recent years but had shoulder surgery this offseason and may (or may not) be available in 2024 but mid-season at the earliest. FA after 2024. MILW appears to want to reduce payroll.

Today is the non-tender day and MILW is looking for a trade match on Woodruff. Hard to see a buyer for his estimated ARB price of $11-12MM. Big money gamble on a guy that even if he does return mid-season ... would he be effective?

So, this is where the Padres come in. IF Woodruff is non-tendered and becomes a FA, do the Padres make a 2-year offer (low 2024 and a high 2025 when he is assumed healthy)? Think they took at approach with Clevinger. Might fit the 2024 payroll with a potential benefit in the playoff run / playoffs then in 2025 (still in need of SP) the bigger payday fits post Soto, Barlow, Kim.

Quality SP is hard to come by at a reasonable price ... gambles have to be taken ... this is shoulder not elbow ... might be a strategy IF Woodruff can land a better deal.

I don't see the trade route since MILW wants to lower payroll (so will not take a "bad contract") and the Padres should have more productive uses of their limited payroll.

On the gamble of SP, COL has just traded for Quantril. It looks as if they sent a MiL catcher that according to MLB.com was not on COL top 30 list.

Looks as if CLE was just looking to clear the salary.

I agree, I dont think I work a trade for him since this year is such a big gamble with the health.

However, I would totally take a risk of a two year deal should he reach the open market. And then if he can make it back this season, it would be a bonus.
