OFFSEASON 2023-24

Fenn, where did you see the rumors about trading Bogearts? Not that I dont like him as a player or even a SS, just thought it was an odd signing considering the composition of the team at the time. Even with moving Tatis to RF, Kim is a great SS, and a fan favorite.

A trade of Bogearts would go a long way to solving many issues. Allow Crone back to 2B where he has more value, Kim to SS (with a contract extension), and allow SD to keep Soto for the start of the season, and still sign some additional pitchers/players.

Did they list teams that may have interest?

Bob Nightengale claimed that outside GMs thought Preller might try to trade Bogaerts or Tatis to avoid trading Soto in an article a while back. I wouldn't put much stock in it.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2023/11/05/shohei-ohtani-free-agency-bidding-war-begins-gm-meetings/71461163007/

Preller will listen on everyone … but not likely trade everyone. Maybe semantics but there is a big difference in Preller “looking to trade X” or “willing to trade X … for the right price” or just “listening” on offers. Plus need to not look only at the individual player but look at the best mix for the team.

When they have Kim, Cronenworth, Bogaerts, and soon Merrill as middle INF but holes in SP/OF … with a budget constraint … Preller has to be “willing to trade any one them … for the right price”. Not sure doing that to keep Soto would be high on my list (probably not even feasible) but just for roster balance.

A lot depends on what other teams value … and the return. My guess will not find a trade partner for Bogaerts (contract too big) unless the Padres take a bad contract back or eat some of the salary. Kim is the best bet as a trade chip to get value back even with only one year control. Cronenworth’s contract and 2023 makes him a tough player to move. For the Padres, no real upside in dealing Merrill with minimal cost and 6 year control.

I did find another rumor on Sports Illustrated and they mentioned that SD could try and send Bogaerts back to BOS (where he could play 2B), but that SD would have to include some money.

BOS offered a shorter deal with a higher AAV, 6 for $180. Whereas he signed in SD for 11 at $280M. Thats $100M, now I dont think that was BOS final offer, but Preller did over pay more so in years v. AAV. Lets say that BOS would have gone 8 at the same AAV as SD (which is close to the AAV that Swanson got from the Cubs), that would mean the difference between BOS and SD is about $75M±.

So, would it be worth it to send Bogaerts back to BOS along with $50M ($5M per year over the final 10 years), putting Kim and Crone back to their correct positions, and still saving $20M± that can be allocated towards other needs? I would think so IMO.

Especially if that meant being able to keep Soto for this seasons playoff run.

Padres claimed RP Logan Gillespie from Boston … just a long shot pick-up on a 40 man roster that is pretty open.

Most scouting suggests he has a mid 90s FB and some other decent pitches … control an issue. He does have a MiL option so for now more a depth play. Not impressive MiL stats but it is about the scouting of “stuff”. Plus he has an appealing backstory bouncing as a non-drafted player who bounced through Indy Ball.

Padres signed veteran INF Tyler Wade (LHH) to a minor league contract on the 10th. Has about 4 years of ML time (NYY/LAA/OAK) as a utility type … not much of a hitter. AAA insurance / roster filler in AAA.

Non-tender deadline coming up on Friday, November 17th.  Might see a few more guys on the Padres' current 40-man join the Free Agent List after not being offered a contract.  Could see Tim Hill, Morejon, Nola and even Barlow non-tendered although Barlow might have some trade value.  Same thing with Grisham.  Next wave of Free Agents coming; Padres have a lot of roster spots open now and may have even more after Friday.

I would be surprised if Morejon was non-tendered since his ARB estimate is less than $1MM (so maybe only $100-200K over minimum) plus has two years control, minor league option. Padres need pitching and he still has some potential even as a call-up LHRP (consider the current alternatives).

I would even put Hill and Nola on the bubble … only $2-3MM in ARB vs having no real alternatives in house. Some depends on how they see Nola’s future after his work this Fall.

Barlow is the more debateable … $6-7MM is getting up there but based on his 2021-2 (and the end of 2023) a fair price … just does that fit with the Padres budget and alternatives? Preller probably has the insight of potentially trying to find a trade partner (per rumors) … and if he couldn’t might go the non-tender route.

On the other hand, if they do tender him … they would still have the entire off-season / ST to trade him as other teams’ priorities change or, if the Padres find out Suarez his an injury. I would guess some other teams will not trade now hoping a non-tender situation and swoop in later or trade for him later. Also, think the rules have changed but think the Padres still have to a certain date where they can release him and not be on the hook for the full contract.

Padres only have 35 on the roster (so room) and by my estimate the current 26 man projected roster is around $182MM with these guys at their ARB levels … so starting point is $18MM+/- under. Depending on Preller's plan for the rest of the roster / players … he could know whether they can handle the pay for these four and/or their projected replacements.

MLBTR has on piece quoting Heyman the the Padres, Dodgers, and Giants are “interested” in signing Snell … key here is “interested” (who isn’t) but no real sense of level of commitment. In fairness the piece did lay out the need within those three teams vs the counter point of budget or other priority adds (see Ohtani).

So does open a roster design question for the Padres … trade Soto (save $33MM) and get some players in return and sign Snell ($25-30MM) to anchor the top of the rotation with Musgrove and Darvish? Does that make the 2024 Padres a better all around team? Does that help the Padres stay relevant beyond 2024 with the best guess that Soto departs via FA?

Take that another step … make the 3 way trade that lands Burnes from MILW ($15MM) and “saves” $18MM …couple that with the $18MM I have the under … sign Snell ($28MM) and they are still $8MM under the target but with a SP staff of Snell, Burnes, Musgrove, and Darvish … and still have not moved any other key pieces … and retained Barlow, Carpenter, Grisham (combined about $17MM). Maybe get lucky and tie Carpenter to the Soto deal, trade  Grisham / Barlow and then sit with pot at maybe $25MM for the replacements which at that point are maybe a couple of OF and a catcher upgrade. Severely complicated to pull off BUT could be a legit path to the playoffs and beyond.

Snell wins Cy Young convincingly 204 votes to Webb’s 86. Snell had 28 of the 30 1st place votes (two second place votes). The other two 1st place were one for Logan Webb (by a CHICAGO writer) and one for Zac Gallen (by an AZ writer … old friend Barry Bloom).
