OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from WindsorUK on November 15, 2023, 7:38 amQuote from BoosterSD on November 14, 2023, 5:33 pmQuantril has been DFA'd today by CLE, and Laur has already been cut from MIL, both should be on Prellers radar for back end of the rotation options.
I'd happily bring back both former #1's.

Quote from WindsorUK on November 15, 2023, 7:40 amQuote from Randy Manese on November 14, 2023, 6:45 pmOn 29 December 2020, Padres traded RHP's Luis Patino and Cole Wilcox (#3 draft choice in 2020) plus Catchers Francisco Mejia and Blake Hunt to Tampa Bay for Blake Snell. 3 years later, Snell is a FA but gave the Padres some memorable games and likely the Cy Young Winner in 2023. Patino was purchased by the White Sox this year after a lackluster career so far. Mejia elected FA after similar spotty results as a part time player for the Rays. Hunt was traded to Seattle at the end of the season and is Rule 5 eligible. Wilcox was left unprotected on the Rays 40 man and is also Rule 5 eligible. At one time, these former Padres prospects were thought to be very good with high potential. Shows why trading for an established player with prospects typically works out for the trading team that gets the established player.
Wouldn't mind taking a chance on Wilcox in Rule 5. Think Niebla can get Wilcox' talent to the surface in the bullpen, if not as a SP. Noted that the Twins left Ethan Salas older brother, Jose (20 years old), unprotected for Rule 5. Unfortunately, Jose hit less than .200 in 370+ plate appearances in High A Midwest League, so unlikely to be drafted. Fully expect Ethan Salas to hit much better whether it is at AA San Antonio or back at High A Fort Wayne, which he essentially skipped over last year.
Didn't Wilcox have Tommy John surgery?
I'd happily bring him back as well.

Lol
I have a feeling the opposite will be true.
I just can't see Seidlers' family dismantling the thing he loved more than anything....to give up on his dream to bring a Championship to SD at the very time he passes away.
I could see still trading Soto for the right deal but nope...no fire sale....I see them trying to win it all again at least for 2024.
Win it for Peter makes more sense....am I the only one who believes this?
Same they did for Kroc in '84.

Quantrill will be tricky. He might get claimed via waivers … or he might get traded before he hits the end of the waiver period (7 days). His shoulder injury last season and his projected $6-7MM ARB might keep some teams away … so a decent chance he hits FA but given his previous success / and his workload some team might just take that waiver gamble.
However, given the Padres payroll issue, Padres may need to wait until FA to get him at a lower price point. Lauer at the right price would seem to fit.
Could we offer something to Cleveland in return for Quantril?
What that look like? Someone in A ball( Elsinore or FW)?

Probably a A ball body ... but the estimated $6.6MM is the Padre question. On one hand, getting a couple years of Quantrill (the Quantrill from 2021-2) at that price is maybe a bargain knowing the need for SP BUT how do you evaluate his shoulder injury and poor 2023. Paying $6.6MM for that performance does not sit well in a budget tightening. I would add other teams likely will take that gamble given the need for pitching ... there may be a limited bidding war ... so?

What about an Ornelas for Quantril?

I doubt a "fire sale" is imminent (sort of depends on one's definition of a "fire sale").
We have heard for months the looming $200MM payroll will cause changes to the roster ... especially if they plan to contend in 2024 and recognize a flawed 26 man roster that would really struggle to contend.
I would think they would stay on this path ... not going to spend more but not clean house.
So is trading Soto a "fire sale" or good strategy to use his $33MM to bolster the SP/bench? That question will sit on any major contract traded. For me it is only a fire sale if the team's payroll drops into the low $100MMs and no quality players are added.
We have already heard rumors that Preller might consider trading Cronenworth or Bogaerts ... maybe Kim in his last control year ... that was not considered fodder for a fire sale but strategic to build a better roster (and maybe get to that $200MM payroll smartly).
Next winter may be more of the issue ... by then, the new ownership structure will be clearer and their vision will start to emerge. The are so many ways this could go ... including Seidler Equity Partners selling the Padres ... take the gain ... and move that money into their other businesses.

Doesn't solve the $6.6MM issue but that would not be a problem player-wise for me.

Seidler said he wanted the team to be a part of his family long after he was gone. I think he wanted the Padres to be a part of his and his family's legacy. My guess is his widow, the Eric's and his brother (who works for the team) will work together to carry on his Padres legacy. His kids can grow up in the organization and assume leadership roles when they get older. He desperately wanted to win a championship for the city. I'm with you I think win it for Peter is the mantra going forward.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 15, 2023, 9:12 amJust saw an interesting note that MLB tendered a status check to the KBO for Lee and Woo Suk Go. It also notes that they are brother's in law. Go has been one of the best relievers in the KBO. Kim wants Lee in SD. If Go gets posted maybe we can bring them both over in a package deal.
