OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 14, 2023, 12:12 amQuote from fenn68 on November 13, 2023, 2:52 pmDid listen to some radio guys suggesting that they can see Preller being creative and working a 3 team trade with Soto … basically:
Soto to team X for prospects
Those prospects go MILW
Burnes to SD
Logic: A). MILW appears to want to rebuild and lower payroll … Burnes has one year control at est. $15MM. B) Padres still want to contend in 2024 … have a big need for a TOR SP … and moving Soto ($33MM) for Burnes ($15MM) gets both that SP and opens more payroll space to fill other holes. Burnes for $15MM is way better than anything on the FA market plus does not clog up the future with another big contract
More than likely some other players would be involved going to/from SD … but that is the basic idea. Makes sense for the Padres in a win in 2024 mode without hurting the top internal prospects for the future.
Hole in LF and still at DH … that $18MM difference in salary would go a long way in filling both.
Funny I was thinking of Milwaukee as a good trade partner if AJ decides to keep Soto and trade prospects for pitching like I expect him to. If the Brewers commit a little stronger to selling we could try to go after Peralta and Houser to help fill out the rotation at a lower cost. They have some older cheap relievers like Payamps and Milner that would be useful too. They have a surplus of young outfielders that could be interesting too. With Yelich locked into LF and Chourio on the way they need to figure out what they're going to do with Frelick, Wiemer and Mitchell. There could be a chance for a blockbuster that fills a lot of our needs and keeps payroll down.

Quote from fenn68 on November 14, 2023, 7:13 amJeff Passan is reporting that the Padres are “actively” trying to trade Scott Barlow ($7.1 MM in est arb, last year of control) before the non-tender deadline. Although he seemed to hedge on whether the Padres would actually non-tender him.
A lot of teams need a decent RP addition and if those teams look at his end of 2023 with the Padres and the previous two years … they might be willing to take the contract. Padres gave little to get him … so something similar should be expected as the return with the primary benefit coming from avoiding the $7.1MM to redeploy to a greater need.
If the Padres believe similar RP can be found at a much lower cost … makes sense.

Quote from fenn68 on November 14, 2023, 7:21 amQuote from Randy Manese on November 13, 2023, 8:28 pm40 man's get set tomorrow - maybe some interesting transactions leading up to deadline? Been really quiet so far.
As it stands the Padres only have 34 on the 40 man … unlikely to add more than 1 or 2 for Rule 5 … so Preller should be lurking on the fringe to pick-up some bodies as other teams deal with tighter 40 man rosters. Even if the adds are just for a “look” into ST then DFA them if not impressive we should expect something.
Side: we may actually see the Padres make a Rule 5 claim (or two) this December with the currently open 40 man … again on a “look” basis into ST and maybe get lucky or just return the player as a low cost gamble.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 14, 2023, 6:45 pmOn 29 December 2020, Padres traded RHP's Luis Patino and Cole Wilcox (#3 draft choice in 2020) plus Catchers Francisco Mejia and Blake Hunt to Tampa Bay for Blake Snell. 3 years later, Snell is a FA but gave the Padres some memorable games and likely the Cy Young Winner in 2023. Patino was purchased by the White Sox this year after a lackluster career so far. Mejia elected FA after similar spotty results as a part time player for the Rays. Hunt was traded to Seattle at the end of the season and is Rule 5 eligible. Wilcox was left unprotected on the Rays 40 man and is also Rule 5 eligible. At one time, these former Padres prospects were thought to be very good with high potential. Shows why trading for an established player with prospects typically works out for the trading team that gets the established player.
Wouldn't mind taking a chance on Wilcox in Rule 5. Think Niebla can get Wilcox' talent to the surface in the bullpen, if not as a SP. Noted that the Twins left Ethan Salas older brother, Jose (20 years old), unprotected for Rule 5. Unfortunately, Jose hit less than .200 in 370+ plate appearances in High A Midwest League, so unlikely to be drafted. Fully expect Ethan Salas to hit much better whether it is at AA San Antonio or back at High A Fort Wayne, which he essentially skipped over last year.

Quantrill will be tricky. He might get claimed via waivers … or he might get traded before he hits the end of the waiver period (7 days). His shoulder injury last season and his projected $6-7MM ARB might keep some teams away … so a decent chance he hits FA but given his previous success / and his workload some team might just take that waiver gamble.
However, given the Padres payroll issue, Padres may need to wait until FA to get him at a lower price point. Lauer at the right price would seem to fit.

Quote from fenn68 on November 14, 2023, 7:07 pmPadres protected Iriate … he was the only protect.
They also DFA Knehr who will miss all 2024 with TJ and apparently will release him. Just guessing but money may be the issue … if they kept him on the roster he would go IL and get paid league minimum …
Roster remains at 34 … a lot of room for tinkering and frankly a number of that 34 are comfortable DFA options if needed.

They had as "best fits": Dodgers; Mariners; White Sox
"nest tier": Blue Jays; Brewers; Tigers
the return target for CINN appears to be pitching (same as SD) ... maybe different level depending on how someone rates India v Cronenworth and/or what if anything CINN/SD adds to the deal or the buyer adds to the deal.
Trading Jake to the Tigers would make sense , he is from a small town about 30 minutes away and Jake going home would be a feel good story .

Quote from fenn68 on November 15, 2023, 6:16 amI guess we have to start considering any potential changes in direction in a post-Seidler era. The business of baseball / Padres continues on its own timeline.
Would think Eric Kutsenda (Siedler Equity Parnters) who has been point with Seidler’s illness would … for now … continue. No idea on his (or the rest of Seidler Equity) view of owning a MLB franchise or how to run it. Then no idea on Peter Seidler’s will and how his assets are distributed (and the thinking of those getting his estate). Not likely we will see the status quo.
In the short run … who is making the calls and to what extent? Are Kutsenda and Greupner directing Preller in his moves? Can’t see Preller being given free rein … so could see a directional change from Peter Seidler’s view. Impact manager selection? Impact on trades, FA signings beyond just the budget issue?
In somewhat a longer view … the future of Preller. Preller and Seidler were close … not likely the two Erics are as tied to him in the same way. Don’t see a change until well after the ownership structure is settled and after the winter mechanics of baseball is concluded … probably he gets the 2024 season before the issue is addressed.
If this winter was going to be fraught with uncertainty regarding the financials … now exponentially more uncertain with the unknown surrounding ownership / leadership.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 15, 2023, 7:17 amNational media types think that we will proceed to have a "fire sale" and even those with no trade clauses will want out.
Lol
I have a feeling the opposite will be true.
I just can't see Seidlers' family dismantling the thing he loved more than anything....to give up on his dream to bring a Championship to SD at the very time he passes away.
I could see still trading Soto for the right deal but nope...no fire sale....I see them trying to win it all again at least for 2024.
Win it for Peter makes more sense....am I the only one who believes this?
