Not any other "power" outfielders left in free agency....

Eddie Rosario, LHH LF who hit 21 HRs last season. He would have been 4th on last years team for HRs and RBIs. Defense can not be that bad compared to Soto last season.

I wouldn't be upset at Rosario but he's 3-4 years younger than Duvall so probably gonna get a 2-4 year deal.

Duvall (35) may be had for a 1-2 year....length of commitment may be a difference maker right now with this team

But then again....who knows what Preller has rolling around in his head?

More likely Preller is holding to a 1 year deal … going with the my other post on the uncertainty of  TV revenue and only Kim, Profar, and Higashioka clear FA not lowering the payroll all that much while at the same time opening three more offensive holes.

Although don’t think they will try to extend Kim … they may want to leave the payroll space to do so as an option and do further upgrades plus deal with what we hope is a decent size ARB increase for King.

Not convinced any of the FA are worth multi-year deals (vs the one who will end up signing for one year) … there will be more FA next winter.

Doubt Preller can fill all the holes to our satisfaction to start the year (although may be deemed right by mid-season if the prospects / trades work out). Preller will be flexible based on how the options shift over the spring … and really don’t know what slots are most critical to Preller. IF it is pitching and the best options are Lorenzen and Ryu … he may be reluctant to spend on other slots until he has landed (or pulled out) either one.

I agree, in all honesty with the TV deal in shambles, the passing of Siedler, and the awkwardness of the progress of the prospects in relation to the start of the year most/all wont be ready until later this year or 2025. This is going to be an rough start to the 2024 season.

Probably best to ride it out, reset the CBT penalties, let the prospects develop at the right pace, and be reloaded for 2025. The passing fan will not understand/appreciate this scenario, but its probably best for long term health and direction of the team.

Wow.....OK.

So this leaves SS open for Merrill in '25 if Kim not extended.

I doubt they move Xander back to SS with Merrill available....unless Merrill is deemed a full time outfielder by this time next year?

Or,dare I say,unless AJ acquires another shortstop......lol

Or given the current Padres approach … De Vries becomes the 2025 SS … 🤯

The move for 2024 makes sense as the better defensive alignment … so first take that on face value.

It is possible that Kim (if he repeats 2023) might actually get that extension OR Kim’s trade value soars for the trade deadline. Merrill would seem the only logical 2025 replacement for Kim even if not considered plus defensively.. However, this move does increase the odds of an extension in my mind.

Heard some comments from Kim (translated) … he seems very very happy in SD and suggested he questioned he would be as well receive by the fans / team if he move to a different team.

Does sound as though he (his agent) will not play hardball on an extension … just a “fair deal” … don’t think a mega discount. Clearly something to work with by Preller. Depending on other moves (or lack of other moves) I see a “fair deal” fitting into the sub CBT budget for then next several years … so that may not be a problem.

Want good publicity … get a deal done before the Korean series. That also would solidify Merrill to the OF (LF or CF) and he can mentally lock into that role.

If they extend Kim before the season … gives Preller the opportunity to establish a “target” 2025 line-up based on projection (hope) and work backwards towards creating a 2024 line-up that does not get in the way of 2025. The “risk” components are Merrill, Marsee, and Pauley and will they be ready to start 2024 with the club … mid-season add … 2025.

That approach would clearly lean into any needed adds to start 2024 would be “throwaways” at the end of the season (or mid-season). If the 2025 “target” is in question at the end of 2024 … have a new FA crop.

2025 “target”: Merrill (LF) - Marsee (CF) - Tatis (RF) - Pauley (DH) - Machado (3B) - Kim (SS) - Bogaerts (2B) - Cronenworth (1B) - Campusano (C). 5 RHH / 4 LHH … and a strong defensive unit.

I guess my main issue with this whole INF situation is Crone staying at 1B. That is to me, a square peg in a round hole. Even if he was the best 1B in MLB defensively, it is a waste due to his bat. There is little value with Crone at 1B offensively.

I guess best situation is he does well this season, and he can be moved to a team that needs a 2B, and we can figure out how to get a more typical bat at 1B. And maybe/hopefully that is Morterella or Pauley.

If Merrill,Marsee and Pauley all pan out like we hope we could afford to have Crone as an "expensive" super utility player for that matter.

Rotate Manny and Bogaerts in to DH each once/twice a week and move guys around to accommodate.

We would have 4 guys at league minimum if these three all produce...not likely all three do.... but maybe?

Either way...IF this happened and everyone stayed healthy also it would be a good problem to have

GO PROSPECTS!

I too would prefer Crone at 2B but they do like his defense at 1B so he could be more of a Brandon Belt type 1B than a Adrian Gonzalez type maybe?
