Not yet seeing the cash flow … but Yamamoto has two opt outs (don’t know when) so gives a lot of flexibility to Yamamoto. If he gets injured (TJ) he does not opt out …. LAD on the hook. IF he is lights out and has an opt out in 5 years (age 30) he does opt out to push for a new deal for more than 7 years and well more than his new salary. Remember Cole has a much higher AAV in his deal.
So, LAD could be on the hook for the worst case and Yamamoto has the upper hand on the best case.
Saw an article that says Yamamotto's contract is back loaded meaning he would have to opt out of a much higher salary than the 27 million average .
Rosenthal used the term “somewhat” backloaded … no idea how big “somewhat” is and have yet to see the cash flow. Opt outs after 6th and 8th year. So could get another FA at 31. If he is really good … part of that opt out decision is getting additional years beyond the 6 remaining … AAV may be less the decision that adding 1 or 2 more years (to age 39) … maybe a Darvish move to age 41 adding 4 years.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 23, 2023, 6:49 amI think the moves will pick up now as the top two dominoes...Ohtani and Yamamoto have fallen.
The losers on these two will act fast to not lose out on their 2nd choice IMO.

Maybe not as intense on the next level as might be thought. Apparently a number of teams consider Ohtani and Yamamoto “special cases” and made runs at them but not as compelled to chase the next level arms (and anything near their demands) … but it only takes one team to bite.
Did hear that NYY and NYM are cool on pursuing the next tier SP. The market for Snell, Montgomery, Stroman has be quiet. I guess SF and LAA are “interested” in Snell per reports.
They will all be signed … but maybe the remaining teams are not that desperate for a top SP … at least at the price they seem to be valued at. How long with the agents keep their demand high?
Sort of the same on Bellinger … whose ask is now over $200MM. He may be the only real quality bat out there but are teams just not interested at that price point. Not sure who is the bidding except SF and the Cubs.
Would expect in January we start seeing those $10MM or less fringe players start getting signed at less than they expected. Better to have a home and get paid that not having a team (and pay) based on ego. That may panic the more costly players to also start being more flexible seeing lower cost (but inferior) players taking up roster slots and payroll money on various teams. Unless you are a Boras client.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 23, 2023, 8:50 amThe Giants in particular will be making a few "largish" moves at some point.
There is no way they don't spend this off season.
Haven't heard much about Chapmans' market.....where's he going?

Quote from WindsorUK on December 23, 2023, 9:04 amI can't imagine Chapman's market being very big? He may end up having to " settle" for less.

Quote from WindsorUK on December 23, 2023, 9:10 amI think the lack of interest in Snell( a TWO time Cy Young winner!) really brings home all the thoughts and concerns that we've shared here over the past 3 years.
Shows up in camp totally unfocused, spending the first half of the season to find his groove. Averaging 5 innings per start, if you're lucky.
Obviously, when he's "on", there isn't anyone better. But is anyone going to spend, what, $25-30 million a year on a guy who isn't locked in all 162?
Angels are desperate for pitching so maybe they'll throw large sums at him?

Quote from WindsorUK on December 23, 2023, 9:12 amHas anyone heard anything at all about Profar or Jankowski returning to SD?
Their money demands certainly would fit into our budget!

Nothing in the rumor line although many agree that at some point Profar will be signed.
My guess is that Boras is still Profar’s agent and we know what happened last winter … so if signed will not be a quick sign. A risk is that Boras holds out too long and Preller may spend his budget elsewhere before Boras comes down on his demand.
Jankowski is probably in the category of whoever gives him an offer … he signs but that may be the end of January.

Essentially that was the commentary as to why the NYY are not interested in Snell at his price.
Also given his history … the 6-7 year deal at age 31 might be the real barrier.
As for Snell to SF … makes sense … BUT do we really know if Melvin (after 2 years managing Snell) wants to add him vs focusing on Montgomery or Stroman?
Everything has a price but maybe not a premium price.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 23, 2023, 9:34 amNow that Yamamoto has signed, Boras really controls the top of the market. He's got Snell, Montgomery, Bellinger, Chapman, Martinez and some second tier guys in free agency. He also has Burnes and Cease on the trade market. Some guys like to have things figured out by Christmas or the New Year. Boras has never been afraid to let things drag on to get the best deal for his client though. I'm hoping the pace picks up a little bit. I'm not sure it actually will.
