OFFSEASON 2023-24

PreviousPage 114 of 184Next

Wondering if it would be possible to get Moniak (LHH) from LAA for CF. They have Trout for CF, but he does have an injury history, so they would need a back up. But they are a bit heavy on OFers. Not sure what they need, but they do want to compete this season.

Wonder if we could make something work around Moniak and Azocar and Suarez.

I can't imagine Chapman's market being very big? He may end up having to " settle" for less.

Had 4.4 WAR last year.

Same as Bogaerts and is 30 years old....he's gonna get paid

Somewhat a question as to who is looking for a major 3B add as their priority?

Chapman's selling point is defense ... his offense over the past 3 season has only be slightly above league average ... so some question how to value that combo given his platform year as just OK. Many are projecting a decline in 2024.

No idea what he is asking for ... but projections had him at 4 years / $80MM ($20MM AAV). Would think he gets that from someone but doubt a herd of teams pursuing him.

Chapman the pitcher, not so much - maybe 5M max.  Chapman the 3b, probably some team will hope that he can get to .250 (hasn't done that in past 5 years) and his power stroke in the upper 20's will return.  Still can play a very good 3b so somewhere in the 12-15M range seems possible; might have to take a 1 year lower bounce back deal to show that it was only his finger injury that caused his power decline.   Don't think he'll get that close to 20M even in these inflated salary times.

That would be a great Musgrove type of story: Local boy returns to play CF for his hometown Padres.

Unfortunately I think that the Angels will have a high asking price, and this year was the first year that he has had above average offense since... highschool, in 2016. He has Grisham with slightly inferior defense written all over him. Worth a chance, but not worth anything of quality in trade.

Dear Santa,

I have been good this year and I am not greedy. At this point, all I want for Christmas is a CF with average offense and defense, and another cheap starter that can give my Padres 150-IP with an ERA under 5.00. Without giving up any of their top 9 prospects. That's not to much to ask, is it?

MLBTR just reported that as would imagine, that this year was the highest in CBT taxes paid in ML history.

Whats funny is that 8 teams paid in, and the top four which was $192.3M did not have one playoff win last season. $192.3M in penalty taxes and not one playoff victory.

I would not get too excited about Moniak’s 1/2 season with the LAA … not that I would not like him in the OF mix … just would not trade any quality asset for him. Then add on the LAA depth chart he is penciled in as the starting RF so I guess their OF is not as deep as thought.

====================================

Just speculation on a series of inter-related moves that would benefit both 2024 and the future (albeit with some gambles). First the base:

1. Build a plan that ensure the Padres do not cross the luxury tax threshold at the end of 2024.

2. Padres will need a #3 level type SP to lengthen the rotation and looking at all the current candidates for #4-5 .. a lot of potential but very limited (if any) work as a ML SP … might be fine for one slot but not two. Few remaining quality SP on the FA market and they will cost in higher AAV.

3. CF is important but

A. Azocar is not a ML starting CF over the course of a season

B. Few want the reigning gold glove RF Tatis shifted to CF

C. Most seem to think Marsee is not best suited for CF

D. The FA market is Kiermaier, Bader, and Taylor for CF … all plus defensively but somewhat limited offensively and, maybe, in the $8-12MM range for multi-year … and signing one would take away from signing a plus SP and the other two bat needed.

So, time to set some priorities and make some gambles … so consider a trade with STL.

STL has added Gray, Lynn, and Gibson to support a strong offense with the intent to contend but have two upgrade needs … SS and closer / end of game RP.

Not in a 1 for 1 move but might consider dangling Kim or Suarez … first moving them expands the money available to get a better #3 SP with money still left over. If Kim betting that Merrill can step in now. If Suarez … just betting the field.

In the return, might they target AA CF Victor Scott … 22 LHH with 80 run / 70 defense yet hit (282 AB) in AA 323/373/450 (better than Marsee in AA). Good chance his speed / defense equals the FA and a chance in offense will not be worse. Get him at league minimum with 6 years control. Currently in the system Head maybe the the next real CF option and maybe that is 4 years out. Zavala and Bush may be 3 years out (and question on being CF).

Make that trade … move the available money to $30MM … sign a $15-20MM SP … still $10–15MM to add a LF bat and maybe a 1B bat (if not ready for Merrill).

Disregard...thought it was another signing,  but same guy.

Again with the opt outs!

It’s never in the Clubs best interest so why does AJ keep offering them?

Maybe I’m wrong but isn’t it unusual to do these player options all the time?
