OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from fenn68 on December 22, 2023, 12:38 pmRumor is that the Padres will hire Victor Rodriguez as the new hitting coach.
He is currently the assistant hitting coach in Cleveland and before that the assistant hitting coach in Boston. Long runs at both stops.
Hopefully he got a good recommendation from Niebla who would have been with him in Cleveland.

Interesting … still only 24 but just not good in his ML work (or minor league work) since traded from SD. He is out of minor league options but maybe if they end up DFA him at the end of ST he clears and ends up in the Padres’ minors. (Sort of a long shot he finds his potential and bumps someone off the 26 man out of ST).
Given the “open” 40 man roster over the winter and the Padres really liked his potential when in the system … clearly worth a shot on pure talent.
Patino will probably get the same chance as Avila and Groome, the other out of options candidates. Unfortunately, if he doesn't win a spot out of spring training Niebla won't have much time to help him.
(Auto correct had changed Groome to Groomed. Could have been big trouble.)

Quote from Randy Manese on December 22, 2023, 1:36 pmAfter that first year with Tampa Bay, Patino's command deserted him resulting in very high BB/9 and HR/9 rates. Longshot at best, but I still remember the kid who was so engaging when interviewed and full of confidence that he could be just as good as Gore. Baseball is a tough business!

Being overly optimistic here but Padres usually have workouts at PETCO prior to ST … IF Niebla is there and a couple of the pitching candidates are there (including Patino) … might have nearly 3 months before the start of the season to work out his issues. Given today’s scouting and technology the Padres likely have a big database on Patino’s past and current form … so maybe already have an idea on what to suggest.
Still a long shot … but worth the shot.

True. The Padres have an open spot or 2 in the bullpen. If he can show any improvement in his command by the end of spring training, he is worth a bp spot at least. Then it's up to Ruben.
Patino has the stuff to be a closer if he has even average command. He doesn't need to be. If he is just good enough to be able to hold the last spot in the Padres bp, then he has the chance to be rebuilt. Maybe even back into a starter eventually. Long shot, but it's one I like. Props to AJ.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 22, 2023, 3:43 pmAs Mr. Padre mentioned, Patino has had shoulder problems and he's also had an oblique strain. Way back in 2021, Tampa was thinking explosive mid-90's fastball, plus slider and a developing 11-5 curve ball that had a chance to be at least average; change-up was acknowledged as a work in progress as was command and control. If fully healthy, Patino has a chance to rediscover himself, but we've been through Espinoza and Honeywell, both of whom were once thought of very highly until injuries so until I start getting some positive feedback on him, just going to cross my fingers and wish the young man best of luck to reach his dreams.

In 1985 Rodriguez actually played for the Padres AAA team in Las Vegas. He had decent stats and thought he might have a chance as a middle infielder, but it turned out those stats were likely inflated by being in the PCL and he never made it to the majors with the Padres. He did play a few games with Baltimore and Minnesota. Over the last couple of years, the Cleveland team has improved its offensive output so hoping he has a positive impact on our team. He's also worked with Bogaerts in Boston, so there's a familiarity there too.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 22, 2023, 5:04 pmWorking with Patiño to make him a late inning reliever makes sense.
Facing 3-4 hitters as opposed to seeing a hitter 3 times.
Also only need to perfect 2 pitches to be successful.really hope that is the plan

Quote from fenn68 on December 23, 2023, 4:25 amI don’t know the cause of this … what seems to be very slow FA signing level so far but past a couple of very high profile signs and moves by a couple of teams … basically nothing.
Of course it may just be that the depth of FA is not compelling to teams … maybe the price tags are too high …or ???
As of yet 5 teams have not yet signed a FA to the ML roster … not even a fringe bench type. Those 5: SD; MIA; MINN; SEA; TOR. Another 6 have only signed 1 “fringe type” and 2 teams have signed only 1 but as a re-sign (PHI with Nola and Colo with Blackman). 5 more teams signed only 2 “fringe types”.
Still a lot of FA on the market … so maybe more than Preller looking to wait it out and get players who need to sign at a bargain.
On the other hand, the lack of movement MIGHT signal some teams would prefer the trade route to avoid the bigger / longer term commitments that some of the “mid-tier” FA appear to be commanding.
Probably two more months of “dancing” with the FA and things get done before ST … but maybe at the last moment.

Not yet seeing the cash flow … but Yamamoto has two opt outs (don’t know when) so gives a lot of flexibility to Yamamoto. If he gets injured (TJ) he does not opt out …. LAD on the hook. IF he is lights out and has an opt out in 5 years (age 30) he does opt out to push for a new deal for more than 7 years and well more than his new salary. Remember Cole has a much higher AAV in his deal.
So, LAD could be on the hook for the worst case and Yamamoto has the upper hand on the best case.
Saw an article that says Yamamotto's contract is back loaded meaning he would have to opt out of a much higher salary than the 27 million average .
