The kid is still just 20 and possesses a mid to upper 90s FB. Had the “stuff” out of Cuba to warrant a big bonus but injuries have limited his 3 minor league campaigns to on about 150 innings.
Padres thought he had upper rotation potential and even with this very limited minor league work added him to the ML roster (and called him up) in 2019 ... so Padres still see his potential.
Injuries are a fact and a concern but at age 20 still a lot of time to put those behind him.
He is has way too much upside to use him as a throw-in for a trade ... and conversely other teams are not going to give equivalent value to his upside given the injuries. Padres should hold on him ... deal with the development risk for their own use or as a much better trade chip. Now, he is that player who would be ‘selling low’.
To me Morejon is the "tease" guy.. All world stuff..yet a frail built .. Very low IP so far ..and besides injuries .. What he has between his ears is somewhat concerning to me.. He dominates he is
..but a call doesn't go his way or someone gets a bloop hit or anfielder makes an error behind him and he becomes a mental midget and implodes almost every single time.. Not a good sign.. Trade him as a high upside P now while he still has value.. I don't see him unseating Gore\Paddack/Patino or Lamet anytine soon and we need MLB talent in the worst way.. If I am AJP I am leading with Morejon on every trade
Just don’t see another team valuing his upside (for all the reasons you suggest) enough to give any quality in return ... and unless the Padres get quality no need to make a trade.
Padres HOLD ... continue to work on developing the upside (If for no other reason developing a better trade chip). If he does not develop ... that is not worse than getting a non factor return for him in a trade.
I probably agree. However, if a team does value him then I say move him (not as a throw in but as a big upside spec).
I am not sure he has the "stuff." In AA he was good but not great. In MLB he was atrocious. Both changes got mashed and his FB is not nearly as dynamic as a Patino or Bolanos. In MLB, I think the Patino / Dustin May FB movement indicate a plus FB. Otherwise the FB must pair with offspead, by deception or tunneling, to elevate both pitches.
To me, when I put Baez and Morejon side by side it is not even close. Baez was good in AA, and looked dominate at MLB in periods. I would not trade Baez. His change up has great depth and because he has length it is even more difficult to pick up. Rather than having two change ups and four pitches that look great on paper, his offspead generates whiffs consistently at every level.
“He was atrocious” in his whole 8 innings pitched in mlb with a sore shoulder? He was brought up too early, he was injured and he was hardly given a chance. Morejon was the best pitcher in Cuba. Baez was an afterthought that same year. Just last year Baez dropped out from the Top 100 prospects list because his fastball had dropped to 94 and his breaking pitches weren’t breaking. This year he looks like a dominant bullpen weapon with dominant starter upside. Maybe we should give Morejon the same chance. His fastball consistently grades higher than Bolanos and at least even to Patino. In fact, his “pure stuff” grades better than Gore at this time. Frail build? The guy is 6’1”, 210 and very strong.
People want him in trades yes, but they want him for cheap. Like how the Rays got Glasnow before he put it together. Let’s give this guy a chance. He has ACE type upside. He is as close to a Julio Urias clone as you can get, just with a MUCH better body. If any of our “golden boy” pitching prospects get hurt or don’t turn out and he does, we could be regretting it forever.

Yes, a 10+ ERA is atrocious in my opinion. I hear you that it may not reflect his potential, but for the 2019 sample size, it is a fact that he got mashed. I stand by my assessment that a 10+ ERA is atrocious.
His AA 4.25 ERA isnt great either. That sample size is larger and involves sub MLB hitters (albeit with MLB potential).
His stuff didn't seem to be nasty. To be honest, I started watching him last year so maybe he has more in the tank that I haven't seen. He clearly has some stuff, but at least last year he didn't seem as strong as Baez or Bolanos at the ML level. For instance, Baez had a low 2 ERA in AA and a low 3 at the ML level. Baez seemed to really display poise, but admittedly this is only an anecdotal observation. I dont really care about "grades," if they fail to translate. Case in point, Tatis who appears to have far greater speed than his grades would seem to suggest. After watching him, it was immediately apparent that his speed was elite.
I am not saying Morejon is trash. And I may be wrong about his upside, but I would move him for a difference maker is all. And maybe I would regret the move -- could certainly happen.
Maybe it was his injury though too idk. I certainly think he was brought up too early. He is really young. It was an odd move to force him into such a tough position. I really hope he gets a fair shake this year. He needs to be in AA with Gore and Patino I think.

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 16, 2019, 8:24 amMorejon without a doubt was "the" guy the vets were griping about re: the discussion of MLB being used for development last yr.
It was the one promotion all year that was ?!?!? He hadn't done anything really yet in AA, could have just protected him after season? Don't know what the rush was if limiting his IP anyway? Just didn't feel right.
I'm more concerned about his physical build; height, delivery, ability to hold up as a SP. But there have been "heart/head" concerns whispered too. He's a lot younger than Baez, emotional maturity can come with age. Don't see the sense in selling low.
Needs to stay healthy & try to hit 100 IP in AA this year.

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 16, 2019, 1:23 pmMy Rx for rest of Pads offseason:
- Sign Ryu to simultaneously add/subtract a 5+ WAR, 1.00 WHIP SP to us / away from LAD. (see Trade ideas post re this)
- Trade Myers + Lucchesi to save $$ (15 MM/yr?)
- Minor Trade or Claim of a RH "Nick Martini" type OF minimum salary to band aid as a platoon RF vs LHP / 5th OF until Olivares or Ona arrive
- Optional: Can still pursue any of the 5 MM next year +/- trade candidates; but not the 10 MM+ guys like Marte or Lindor. If need $$ can (separately) trade Kinsler with a prospect attached
Rotation: Ryu (L), Richards, Paddack, Davies, Lamet 6th/swing: Quantrill Coming attractions: Gore (L), Patino, etc.... specifically set rotation up so Lamet (not Davies) precedes Ryu ; colossal "5th" SP advantage & power/finesse MPH contrast
LF: Pham CF: Grisham (L) / Margot RF: Naylor or Cordero (L) / "new guy"

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 16, 2019, 1:58 pmI'm thinking if the Padres thought Ryu would be a 5+ WAR starter in 20' they would have already signed him.
However....they still have to move Myers and those discussions may be holding any and all other moves up at this point.
I'm also guessing they don't think they are going to be able to move Myers or they would have made that deal with Clev for Kluber or signed Ryu thinking they would get Myers moved at a later date.
OR...they really are talking to Clev about Lindor about some blockbuster that includes Myers.....which would then mean it would also include an absurd amount of prospects. To get Lindor AND get them to take Myers would cost.....alot!

Dont you think there is a reason LAD have not resigned Ryu. They know him better than anyone and have not heard any rumors about him resigning Ryu. I dont think he holds up for a long term contract.
And personally, I dont see why you would want to waste any money on Ryu. Yes, he was good the 1st half of last season, came back to Earth the 2nd half. 2019 was the first time he pitched over 160 innings since 2013. I see a Ryu signing as a bad deal waiting too happen.

If it only took Luchessi to rid SD of all of Myers contract, that trade would have been made the day after the WS. I was listening to XM this morning, and Jim Duquette said he wouldnt even take Myers at $10M per season. Then they discussed a Myers and prospect deal such as the Cozart/SF trade, and he thought it would take 4-5 prospects to rid SD of his contract. So........probably why nothing has happened so far to this point.
Naylor your starting RFer!! There is NO WAY a team makes it to a .500 record, let alone WC contention with Naylor as the starting RFer. IF he is our starting RFer for more than 5 games next season, might as well just set up shop in the NL West basement again.
Better off just staying with Myers at this point.

Oh I don’t think they are.
The fact they don’t want Myers is why we didn’t get Kluber.
Was just throwing it out there as we probably can’t make any additional moves until Myers is moved.
Rumor is we are talking to Clev about Lindor.
Not sure how this could be possible unless Myers is involved(which would cost HUGE #’s of prospects) or we have Myers going elsewhere.
Which also seems unlikely.
So pencil Myers into RF and forget all about getting Lindor.
