Could he be involved in a trade to Clev.?
Or a Myers dump? Prefer "no" to both. I mean if we are in on Marte I can stomach the move as we are truly positioning for 2020-21. However, I liked the idea of having specs Olivares, Cordero, TT, Cordoba (believe some may be sleeping on him), Abrams (maybe CF), and Grisham to an extent to form the foundation of OF in the future (like 2021+).
I know we are focused on winning now, but I think it may take two waves of contention to get to the promise land. I would really to get one more top / near MLB OF prospect. Certainly willing to give up a Morejon / Weathers type + for that player.
Count me in as seeing the big upside remaining in Allen Córdoba. Strong hitting prospect with STL who effectively lost 2 years of development in 2017 (Rule 5 pick by the Padres) and 2018 (devastating injury for auto accident).
Not just a hitter, but athletic ... SS in the STL system and now being used at 3B/LF in LE but also CF/RF/SS.
2019 with LE ... after readjusting in the 1st half ... he produced a 2nd half (266 AB) 323/395/436 (831) and does not strikeout a lot (less than 20%).
Just turned 24 ... RHH ... poised for a breakout year in AA (probably LF) ... easy to project him as a “super utility” ML player as a floor but with starter upside ... it is this hitting potential that sets him up in my view.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 15, 2019, 5:45 am3 moves I like to see between now and ST
1) Get Kubler ..2 yrs 20 and 21 option.. Makes smooth Gore for Ricjards in 21 and Patino for Kubler in 22 (can always buy him out if he sucks in 20)..obviously both Gore and Patino should get 10-15 starts before they transition to rotation full time
2) Trade Myers
3) Sign Puig 3/27.. Big persona goes well with Paddack/Pham and Tatis Jr ..the anti-Myers
Prospect cost minimal + $ in vs out say $10 mil differential
Leaves C Mejia/Hedges and 2B an army of Swiss knifes in ok shape but upgradeable by July or next off-season.. Nothing major but 3 moves that make us +5 WAR + better than we are today

Quote from fenn68 on December 15, 2019, 6:00 amAlso, think we are giving up too soon on Morejon. The kid is still just 20 and possesses a mid to upper 90s FB. Had the “stuff” out of Cuba to warrant a big bonus but injuries have limited his 3 minor league campaigns to on about 150 innings.
Padres thought he had upper rotation potential and even with this very limited minor league work added him to the ML roster (and called him up) in 2019 ... so Padres still see his potential.
Injuries are a fact and a concern but at age 20 still a lot of time to put those behind him.
He is has way too much upside to use him as a throw-in for a trade ... and conversely other teams are not going to give equivalent value to his upside given the injuries. Padres should hold on him ... deal with the development risk for their own use or as a much better trade chip. Now, he is that player who would be ‘selling low’.

To me Morejon is the "tease" guy.. All world stuff..yet a frail built .. Very low IP so far ..and besides injuries .. What he has between his ears is somewhat concerning to me.. He dominates he is 👌..but a call doesn't go his way or someone gets a bloop hit or anfielder makes an error behind him and he becomes a mental midget and implodes almost every single time.. Not a good sign.. Trade him as a high upside P now while he still has value.. I don't see him unseating Gore\Paddack/Patino or Lamet anytine soon and we need MLB talent in the worst way.. If I am AJP I am leading with Morejon on every trade

Quote from fenn68 on December 15, 2019, 6:31 amWould not make a 3 year commitment to Puig .... not with money needed for a Yates extension and a plethora of OF prospects arriving (Grisham, Trammell, Cordero, Naylor, Ona, Olivares) who he (3 years) and Pham (2 years) would block.
Add that at some point in that period the Padres will likely be looking to buyout the arbitration years and FA years for Tatis and Paddack (using up front bonuses) that will need some upfront money (BIG money).
side note: Puig is currently in Japan with his “fans” and has been working out for fun with SUMO wrestlers. Puig is entertaining.
=====
1. Trade/DFA Hedges
2. Trade Myers (if the cost in prospects is acceptable)
3. Add Kluber (if the cost in prospects is acceptable)
4. Sign Adam Jones on a 1 year deal (apparently considering Japan) IF he is willing to become part time RF platooning with Cordero. High character teammate and community guy with the Baltimore connection ... plus from SD.

I am pretty sure Jones signed with Japan a few days back
As far as Puig blocking anyone.. Until we have an OF ready to avg .823 OPS per season (haven't had one in over a decade in SD) he ain't blocking anyone..

Just don’t see another team valuing his upside (for all the reasons you suggest) enough to give any quality in return ... and unless the Padres get quality no need to make a trade.
Padres HOLD ... continue to work on developing the upside (If for no other reason developing a better trade chip). If he does not develop ... that is not worse than getting a non factor return for him in a trade.

I probably agree. However, if a team does value him then I say move him (not as a throw in but as a big upside spec).
I am not sure he has the "stuff." In AA he was good but not great. In MLB he was atrocious. Both changes got mashed and his FB is not nearly as dynamic as a Patino or Bolanos. In MLB, I think the Patino / Dustin May FB movement indicate a plus FB. Otherwise the FB must pair with offspead, by deception or tunneling, to elevate both pitches.
To me, when I put Baez and Morejon side by side it is not even close. Baez was good in AA, and looked dominate at MLB in periods. I would not trade Baez. His change up has great depth and because he has length it is even more difficult to pick up. Rather than having two change ups and four pitches that look great on paper, his offspead generates whiffs consistently at every level.
