Listened to a brief interview with AJP on XM this morning. It was with Mad Dog Russo, so not the best interview. The one thing I took from the interview was that AJP thought that the team was closer to being the 1st half team, versus the team after the ASB. He thinks of Davies as a more experienced back of the rotation guy, than closer to the front or middle. So, basically a more reliable Lauer, a good upgrade. It appears that he thinks they are closer to WC contention than we may think they are. With the adds of Pham and Davies, more of an intensity to help with the swoon we saw in the second half.

What else could he say....his job is on the line.

Does anybody really think that Pham, Profar and Davies are going to put us over the top into the playoffs ?  There is a reason these guys were available

We started last year with a rotation of Paddack, Lucchesie, Lauer, Strahm and Margevicious. We have replaced the last 3 with Richards, Lamet and Davies. That is a TITANIC upgrade! Richards has a lifetime ERA just over 3.00. He has the highest spin breaking balls in the sport. Davies has an ERA a half run better than Lauer. And Margevicius vs. Lamet? C ‘mon!

We were competing for a playoff spot in the first half last year. Our rotation is MUCH better. Our bullpen is better. Our offense is better. Not a ton better, but definitely more experienced and competitive. We have a noticeably better team now. All they have to do is keep up their first half performance without fading.

Do think all the pieces are in place to hit that .500 mark without players having "breakout" or "career" years ... good base to work from.

100% on the same page ... so ... what's the over/under for 2020 wins?

My first gut feel was ... 83 ... and rising!

Here's a line ... https://www.thelines.com/mlb-win-totals-pointsbet-2020/ ... 84.5 ...

Would I bet the "under 84.5" right now?  No 🙂

But if Manny is playing so well he can get $40 mil we would certainly benefit from keeping him for $30

That's why the player option sucks...if he's no good you are stuck paying the $30 mil.

If he's "real" good...you lose him.

Now a "Team" option....now THAT's what you want.....lol

If all we did was add Pham,Davies,Profar and Grisham to the team we started last year with then no...not enough.

But,with Tatis back full time and the rotation "much" better and adding a couple guys who can now get on base at the top of the order...that's big.

How many solo home runs did Renfroe and Franmil hit last year?

I know exactly....too damn many.

I am predicting Lamet has a monster year for us.

I think All Star rep or at least worthy, but probably overlooked because Padres.

I would like to see one more bat added to the middle of the lineup.

Not sure how we can afford or get one that would be a difference maker but I really don't want to see Hosmer as our #4 hitter.

Thinking if we don't trade any more Starters there just won't be a spot for a surprise add of Gore on the Opening day roster.

Unless there are additional moves involving Luchessi or Quantril etc...or God forbid injuries.....I'm guessing no matter how well he or Patino do in ST they will be in Amarillo.

What else could we do with all these Starters otherwise?

I don't see any other than maybe Quantrill going to the Pen.

I know he is not great, but he did drive in 99 runs last season with a poor OBP team. Good for 12th in the NL last season.

I'm with you but apparently according to all those new fangled statisticky thingies he grades out as almost dead last offensively for first basemen?

I still use my eyes and experience more than relying on new metrics and don't think he's as bad as they say....maybe not $21 mil worth but he is what he is I guess.

I just think he'd be an awesome #6 hitter...meaning we would have better options at #4 and #5.

I agree MrP. I dont think he is worth $21M, maybe more along the line of $16-18M, but nothing we can do about it now. I do think he is important to the clubhouse, the guys seem to gravitate to him. I know a couple of guys out here in AZ that I umpire with have met him multiple times during back field ST games, and they say its real, just an awesome guy. I think I met him once during Royals fantasy camp.

But yes, if we had the guys that could push him down to the 6th or 7th spot in the lineup, that would mean we have a really nice line up.

I will be honest, the thing I am most shocked/disappointed is with Hosmer, is the OBP. I thought he was a more discerning eye than what has shown in SD. And the glove was shakier last year, so hopefully a bounce back year for Hosmer is in store for us in 2020.
