I still think moving Myers with some incentive pieces but not asking for anything in return is the most feasible to keep the additional trade chips down and potentially allow the buying team to take more salary. Add that a lot of potential buyers that will be motivated taking on Myers and prospects really don't have trade chips they want to move or the Padres probably want.

Once it is clear that Myers is gone ... payroll space is opened ... and a clear reset on remaining prospects ... the Padres have the tools to target further upgrades from teams that have no interest in Myers.

I think if I was the Mariners I would take Myers for Haniger if I gained a couple good prospects and only added $10 mil per for 3

They aren't winning in 2020 anyway...take a chance Myers rebounds(no guarantee Haniger will either) and add to Farm system for 21-

If AJ even has interest in Haniger....same could be said for Pit and Marte.

Just depends on the level of prospects they would settle for.

We aren't giving 2 top 10 guys or even one top 5 from "our" system.

But one top 10 and a top 20 plus Myers....sure.

At this time, I am not sure I unload our pitching assets only to save money by unloading Myers. Such a move could result in losing controllable pitching with upside for in a best case scenario a Ryu or Madbum acquisition (expensive, long contract)? As some have mentioned, I think standing by is possibly the best move, or a trade -- where a corresponding acquisition is guaranteed. If a trade, I would only consider a gold piece at this point. Something like positional player or SP on a friendly deal who is a premium player (Whit or Gray something like that).

Here is the main reason I hope that SD does NOT chase MadBum. Our main objective is to get to the playoffs, and you have a better chance to do that if you win the division, meaning beat the LAD. Last season v the LAD here is MadBums record. 0-4 with an ERA of 3.35 and 5.67 innings per start. Even worse, after his 1st start against the Duds. He went 0-3, with an ERA of 4.01 and only 5.4 innings per start. I dont see how committing $20M+ to him helps us with our goal. Now he might go old school MadBum once he is in the playoffs, IMO not worth the risk.

I think Myers is just so disappointing to me because I really think that not playing for Andy Green is going to be the best thing for him mentally. He clearly did not like to play for Andy (unintentionally voicing his frustration to what became public). I don’t know about you guys but not enjoying working for a manager can be mentally draining and can really alter performance, regardless of compensation. So while we need the payroll flexibility to fill holes, I think eating a lot will come back to hurt us. His talent has come in flashes over the past few years. We have shifted him to new position after new position. Let him be in an environment where he can relax and focus on his job and see what happens. The issue is we don’t have that luxury. They should have canned Andy when they signed Manny. That was one more build year and could have had that round of building to build around the new voice.

As for Pham, he is the type of player we need big time. Edwards is a big time pay. I think we saw one really good half season from Renfroe. While I agree we need a couple home run hitters in the lineup, he just didn’t hit enough to even be our Greg Vaughn. His defense was good last year, sure, but overall he was just not good. We’ll see how much of it was injuries but I think Pham will be good for this team provider he plays 130 -150 games

As for Madbum, I actually was hoping we would sign him before the dominoes started falling on these pitching deals. IMO they are ludicrous. That Stras deal is going to be fine for maybe 2-3 years and then the last 4 years are going to be painful. It’s just a lot of money these guys are guaranteed with zero guarantee for the teams. In regards to Madbum, how much of his issues was in relation to the atv accident? Will he be able to get his velo back up? Time will tell but personally, I am now unsure what to think of the market and would hope the padres could get a starter by trade or just stick with who we have. I think gore and patino and Lamet are going to be the future of the rotation with possibly Quantril in the conversation as well

The deal for Rendon may be interesting to Padre fans because Manny does have that opt out after 4 more seasons.

If he has a monster season in 2023 he could very well be gone for $40+ mil for 5 years.

A $10 mil a year raise for 5 seasons is $50 million....he would be crazy not to take it.

But...we certainly don't want the alternative which would be him not playing well enough to leave.

This is why I hate player opt outs....it only benefits the player.

Our only hope is that he is playing great and we are winning.....so he either doesn't want to leave or would re-sign with us.

If the Padres can get 4 good seasons out of Manny and he opts out ... I am OK with that with just enjoying watching some quality (and potential playoff ball) in the Pads.

In 4 years contract inflation will very likely move the AAV of a top flight 3B past the $30MM plateau. Might actually want Machado to opt out ... maybe Tatis has physically matured and becomes more suited to 3B ... maybe Arias is all we want him to be and is still around to assume the SS role ... maybe we need that $30MM from Machado to extend Paddack, Tatis, et. al.

I don't think he has a no trade ... could even see him dealt before that option is exercised.

4 years is a long time in baseball years.

Plus, who knows what happens with the CBA after 2020?

Most seem to think the UNION will want to blow the lid off the luxury tax .... their less elite members are getting really squeezed since the elite are taking the money and the middle veterans are being shut out in favor of league minimum guys to balance the budget.

Listened to a brief interview with AJP on XM this morning. It was with Mad Dog Russo, so not the best interview. The one thing I took from the interview was that AJP thought that the team was closer to being the 1st half team, versus the team after the ASB. He thinks of Davies as a more experienced back of the rotation guy, than closer to the front or middle. So, basically a more reliable Lauer, a good upgrade. It appears that he thinks they are closer to WC contention than we may think they are. With the adds of Pham and Davies, more of an intensity to help with the swoon we saw in the second half.
