Here's the quote for me about Edwards..."Edwards has the chance to be a star;he has the superlative athleticism and bat control to make his game work without power, and his ceiling if he adds exit velocity is huge".
Considering he played the entire season at 19 years old means he could certainly add some strength.
It also worries me trading with Tampa....they almost always win their trades.Just ask St Louis(Pham) and Pittsburgh(Archer)!
The author also said that there is no clear winner/loser in this trade. He likes both prospects, and mentions that he also thinks that Cronenworth is the safer bet, while Edwards still needs to "gambled" on because he is a slap/speed guy. I get your attachment to Edwards, but heres hoping that we see both sides do well with this trade.
You can always go see Edwards in TAM, isnt it a short trip for you MrP?
I'm ready to win now so as I said I'm OK with the trade....just wish we gave up a couple other guys instead of Edwards.
And while Tampa is just a 4 hour drive Edwards is no longer a Padre!

I am sure that if we could have traded a couple of other guys we would have traded a couple of other guys but the reason the trade was made was because Tampa Bay would accept just a couple of other guys.

Quote from TatisJr on December 6, 2019, 1:52 pm“Mr P, before they announced the prospect back, I thought we overpaid too, but J.C. looks like the PERFECT albeit "inferior" replacement to Edwards. Think there's a real chance we're all thrilled not just Pham but JC too: Don't see how AAA batting champ can have a hit tool any lower than Edwards, power is better, arm is better, defense has been good enough to remain at SS through highest level of the minors of our competition for the deepest Farm system in baseball (I admit exchanging Edwards for Cronenworth, Rays have us slightly beat now), speed much worse than Edwards- but not "bad"/below average.... and he's plug-in ready AND LH which are both huge keys.”
Brian, that’s exactly how I felt. I went to bed thinking the Padres gave up too much, but once I read the deal involved Crenonworth I felt like the Padres end of the deal was better. As others have noted Crenonworth is a legitimate 2 way player. I know it sounds gimmicky, but the guy can actually hit. I really like his short compact smooth swing as LHH. Supposedly his curveball is nasty and he touches 94-96 with the fastball. Sounds like he’s got the stuff to be in relief. I love that Preller is just loading this roster with stud athletes. Losing X sucks and Renfroe will likely do very well in TB, but Pham didn’t seem attainable to me and Crenonworth is worth being excited about. We will see, but I think this is a win-win deal for both teams and I’m very happy with the Padres return. Still can’t believe we got Tatis, Pham, Manny as the 1,2,3.
I think Pham’s personality and what he brings to the clubhouse is underestimated. Pham is a leader, competitive as they come and plays extremely hard. I’ve heard Pham described as a pit bull. His attitude and fire seem to rub off on other players. Pham is measurably the much better player, but it’s also the stuff you can’t measure that really makes this acquisition so exciting. The Padres usually seem soft and a little too easy going. Pham will bring a needed edge and toughness to this team. We needed a pit bull and AJP got us a pit bull with an excellent OBP. Love the deal, love this Padres offseason and can’t wait to see what AJP does next.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 6, 2019, 2:12 pmBefore last season Cronenworth was pretty average in every way.
Very little power....a little speed.....hitting .270 ish.
Hoping last season isn't the anomaly and buying high.
I realize he isn't the prize of the deal or anything....but let's not get ahead of ourselves either.
Is he really that much better than Owen Miller?
Miller hit better in AA and I imagine he will also dominate AAA and is 2 years younger.
I'm not complaining......I'm just gonna hold off getting excited about the minor piece is all.

Quote from TatisJr on December 6, 2019, 2:34 pmI don’t think Cronenworth is better than Owen Miller. AJP trading Urias and X shows he’s happy with his potential future 2B options. I feel Cronenworth isn’t just some gimmicky thrown in. He might be a very useful player in 2020 and his LHH hitting stroke is short, compact and smooth. The stroke looks good to me. Pham is the very clear headliner, I just think Cronenworth is worth some attention. IMO The huge difference between Pham and Renfroe isn’t equalized by Edwards-Cronenworth.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 6, 2019, 2:52 pmSo apparently the Pirates are looking for a top Catching prospect in any deal for Marte.
Are we willing to deal Mejia or Campusano plus, in a deal for Marte?
Say Margot/Campusano/Bolanos?

It will be interesting to see where they wind up ranked relative to each other. Cronenworth is much older, and I do kind of wonder why he wasn't a Sept callup (but Rays were a playoff team).
But 4 things jump out to me putting him > Miller. The single biggest is that he's LH hitter. 2) Not just SS capable, but has remained at the position in an ultra-deep talented system; zero questions about the arm, 3) IL is not the hitter's league PCL is. Juiced ball = stat boost? I'm sure. But I don't know if Miller's a lock to be top 10 in BA in PCL next year. 4) Small sample, but Miller did struggle in the Arizona Fall League this year; but he did rise through sytem incredibly fast

Well, we've GOT to be the best trade fit: cheap CF backfill, loaded @ C, loaded with SP prospects. I might do that deal. Marte is a huge improvement over Margot vs RHP
To me it might hinge on if ownership is willing to add +10 MM Net WITHOUT trading out Myers, opening another hole? Or have we all had enough of Wil & that might be addition by subtraction? Tough call

I havent thought a lot about it yet, initially I am more inclined to trade Mejia and keep Campusano. Just seems like the more complete player. Although Mejia is a switch hitter, which I like a lot. Its too bad we dont have a LHH back up catcher type player that is/or close to ML ready in the system (sarcasm). I think its easy to find that veteran back up catcher usually on the cheap. And with the younger pitching staff, and improved offense in other positions, maybe its beneficial that we stick with Hedges (cant believe I am typing this) for his top level catching skills.
Mejia, Margot, and Morejon for Marte.
