Really?
Edwards ceiling is like 760 OPS just saying dude has Zero Power I love his hit/speed/D combo but basically a 3 tool player.. Cronsworth 5 tool player ..ready for MLB fits window .. Fangraphs had Edwards #12 in our system Consworth #17 in TB.. Likely like #13-#14 innours if not higher.. Age 25 (was drafted at 21 yrs old) sort of reminds me of a young Whit and with teams only carrying 13 potxhers has tremdoua value as a 14th P..
Not every baseball player has to hit homeruns to be productive.
Using OPS to judge a player like Edwards is foolish IMO.
OBP,steals and runs scored + defense.
I get that we are in "win now" mode...I've been saying it all along that these prospects aren't gonna do Preller any good if he's out of work in 1-2 years.
So I get it.
I just wish we could have given up someone else besides Edwards.
Everyone has a prospect or two they are anxious to see in S.D.
We need to win in 20-21' or we may regret losing Edwards once he hits Tampa....plus Pham will be gone.....all I'm saying.
Before the offseason started, I thought the most likely Top 100 MLB prospect we would consider trading was Edwards.
No way on Gore, extremely unlikely for Trammell, only for a MLB TOR/all star caliber player now for Patino...
Abrams 1st look was phenomenal & too far away to have a lot of value, and Campusano broke out & POSSIBLE due to C depth, but more likely to trade lesser prospects ahead of him in system (did with A. Allen). That left Edwards.
When we traded Urias I figured keep Edwards, but didn't think he'd be ready O.D. 2021, so even Profar didn't bridge to him. I really feel like LH Cronenworth perfectly solves that issue b/c he might be ready NOW, definitely by 2021. Has always gotten on base & hit last year better than literally anyone in AAA!
I have also thought all offseason that Pads are REALLY high on Arias, and while not untouchable, they would really like to hold onto him, b/c he clearly might be a better defensive SS than Tatis in a few years, and Tatis' bat can really play anywhere.

Quote from fenn68 on December 6, 2019, 10:46 amI would go Tatis #1 and Pham #2 .... Tatis is a free swinger and a terror in the base paths ... putting him 2nd with Pham on base may impinge on his best talents. Pham is the veteran who probably has more patience and bat control to enhance Tatis' base running skills.
Machado probably at #3 although could make an argument for Hosmer vs RHP ... not the power but breaks up RHH Tatis / Pham and sitting Machado at #4. Keep Machado at #4 and vs LHP Myers goes to #3 and Hosmer drops (or is platooned). Hosmer does hit RHP, pretty good in the clutch and gets RBI ... with men on base ahead of him and Machado behind him might get some good productivity.
#5 might be a surprise spot for Mejia ... may not like him as a catcher but the guy clearly was a very good hitter (switch hitter) in the second half on 2019 with some power and some OBP.
#6 maybe the flip spot with #3 for Myers / Hosmer (L)
#7-8 could be dependent on the pitcher / player development ... Grisham (L)/Margot platoon and Profar (#) / TBD ... all have something to prove offensively so starting them at the bottom of the line-up to see who they really are might make sense.
Still ... a proven offensive upgrade over Margot / Grisham in CF or Myers / Naylor (L) in RF still needs to be considered in a win now environment.
Offense has a chance ... even now ... to be significantly more productive taking them out of the pits in MLB. Could see Preller shifting his aim at another SP upgrade. Keep in mind an upgrade should be judged against Lucchesi and/or Quantrill (not a big hurdle).

Here's the quote for me about Edwards..."Edwards has the chance to be a star;he has the superlative athleticism and bat control to make his game work without power, and his ceiling if he adds exit velocity is huge".
Considering he played the entire season at 19 years old means he could certainly add some strength.
It also worries me trading with Tampa....they almost always win their trades.Just ask St Louis(Pham) and Pittsburgh(Archer)!

The author also said that there is no clear winner/loser in this trade. He likes both prospects, and mentions that he also thinks that Cronenworth is the safer bet, while Edwards still needs to "gambled" on because he is a slap/speed guy. I get your attachment to Edwards, but heres hoping that we see both sides do well with this trade.
You can always go see Edwards in TAM, isnt it a short trip for you MrP?

Quote from hoffy51 on December 6, 2019, 11:36 amEveryone has a favorite prospect they don't want to trade. But it was clear from the Padre front office that prospects were going to be traded to improve the product on the field. We can disagree on which prospects need to be traded, but so far, we have kept Gore, Trammell, Patino, Abrams, Campusano, and Morejon. I am happy about that. I am also happy that I don't have to see Hunter Renfroe strike out so much and be a hole in our lineup (with the occasional home run).
Here's the quote I love from Blake Snell, "Tommy's the man, bro. It's just hella (???) stupid. I'm just upset that we gave away a huge piece of our team. He was the swag of our team. He lifted a lot of our position players up with just his presence and made other guys more swaggy."
At least he is a professional hitter, and will not be a hole in our our lineup. We still have Arias, if Pham costs us Edwards, so be it.

Quote from fenn68 on December 6, 2019, 11:46 amI would add that with Pham we are not talking a platoon player since I do like some stability in a line-up and there are never enough quality platoon options to go around and cover 8 slots.

Quote from fenn68 on December 6, 2019, 12:04 pmI guess Cronenworth’s 2019 performance and versatility in the INF with a RP option is getting him well into the conversation as the “perfect” 26th man on the expanded rosters. Decent bat, LHH, SS/2B with the RP “extra” does sound that way ... we should see in ST if AAA translates into ML.
With Profar a lock for the roster (and let us give him 2B for now) .... if Cronenworth makes the 26 man ... should be only one more INF among Kinsler, Garcia, and France unless they shave an OF and take only one of Grisham, Naylor, and Cordero.
Coming moves should alter that mix but the bubbles seems about to burst for some familiar names (even if it means relegated to EP for France, Naylor, Cordero).

SO awesome! He was NOT happy about the trade! Did you see/hear the "we traded Pham for Renfroe & a slapd**k prospect?!" 🙂 Ouch! ... Awkward 1st day of ST less than 3 months away! Fans not thrilled either, so positive signs there!
Mr P, before they announced the prospect back, I thought we overpaid too, but J.C. looks like the PERFECT albeit "inferior" replacement to Edwards. Think there's a real chance we're all thrilled not just Pham but JC too: Don't see how AAA batting champ can have a hit tool any lower than Edwards, power is better, arm is better, defense has been good enough to remain at SS through highest level of the minors of our competition for the deepest Farm system in baseball (I admit exchanging Edwards for Cronenworth, Rays have us slightly beat now), speed much worse than Edwards- but not "bad"/below average.... and he's plug-in ready AND LH which are both huge keys.
Edwards lack of power a pretty big concern: only 27 XBH incl 1 HR across 547 PA in 2 leagues. Before trading him I felt strongly Preller/Pads should return him to Elsinore to work on driving ball more for at leastt 1/2 season before advancing him to AA....
Hoffy is right; at the end of the day we have to be willing to part with SOMEONE in our top 100 prospects to try to get better.
