Quote from BoosterSD on December 2, 2019, 11:47 amIt appears that AJP should be happy with his INF, CF, the Bullpen, and IMO Catcher, and 1/2 way there with RF and Renfroe. IMO still need LF figured out, and maybe a platoon partner for Renfroe that can handle RHP better. And for the right price, a TOR SP.
All things considered, that we have not even reached the Winter Meetings yet, its been a decent off season so far.
My choice is still Dickerson for LF. Kluber for SP? And Conforto for RF with Renfroe.

Quote from fenn68 on December 2, 2019, 12:05 pmOn Profar not much more than signing him as a FA for 1 year without having to negotiate against other teams. Was not high on Allen.
Did see a comment that Preller will give a shot a 2B but is still seeking 2B options via trade.
Profar ... as a super utility ... is maybe a better back-up SS option to give Tatis a day off now and then plus switch hitter gives more LHH options. Also, since he can play some OF maybe they keep France, Garcia, and Kinsler with Profar and drop to only one reserve OF. Not good for Naylor or Cordero in the short run.
Still, $5.6MM is “pricey” for a bounce back candidate with a marginal career profile.

Quote from sportwarrior on December 2, 2019, 12:13 pmAustin Allen strikes me as... unnecessary to give up for a guy like Profar? We've got plenty of depth at C, but it surprises me we gave up anything of note at all for Profar...

I think Naylor and Cordero both need time in AAA to start 2020 anyway, so not overly concerned in that aspect anyway.
I agree $5.6M is a bit high for a super utility guy. I guess there is a possibility to negotiate a two year deal, and reduce the commitment for 2020 until Oliveras and Kinsler monies drop off. Then two years of Profar as insurance until the arrival of Edwards is a safe bet. Maybe a 2 for $9M deal would work for both sides. Maybe $4M this season and $5M next season?

Unless Oakland had other trade options ... so if Preller wanted Profar he had to pay something. Not seeing a big ML future for Allen ... so OK.

Quote from TatisJr on December 2, 2019, 1:20 pmI like the Profar addition. He wasn’t very good last year, but I noticed projections for 2020 have him hitting .250 with a .331 OBP, 18 homers and being 2.2 WAR player. If he can produce like that, I’ll take it. Obviously he hasn’t lived up the tremendous hype surrounding him, but AJP knows him well and has coveted him for years. Parting with Allen isn’t a big loss. He can be a solid bat off the bench, but I don’t ever see him being a ML regular.

Quote from TatisJr on December 2, 2019, 1:33 pmJust noticed Profar had 17 Home runs as LHH, but hit an ugly .192. He only hit 3 homers as a RHH, but owned lefty pitchers for a .305 BA and .378 OBP.

Quote from dusty on December 2, 2019, 2:13 pmPoint blank, I like the move. I think it is another upgrade that didn't cost the moon. He can play 2B, SS and 3B so gives us some depth. I think this means we will likely see a non tender/trade of Garcia or France. I am not sure they will send France back down but that is also a possibility. Also, for those thinking we gave up a lot for Profar, it is just more clearing of the excess of good fat. Did I think we could get more for one of our catchers? Sure. But obviously I, and not just me, was wrong as Preller has had a long time to move some of these guys. Allen, simply didn't have a spot on the future of this team with Mejia, Hedges (say what you want about him until we find a taker for his value, yes he still has value), Torrens, Campusano, and Hunt all in the picture to a degree. The move also clears off a catcher from the 40 man...we have too many catchers on the 40 man...someone needed to go. Now if we get the Preller after April, and that seems very likely given the large sample size, then 2B is improved dramatically. The left side of the infield will also improve dramatically from last year's Tatis-less Padres.
I guess the question that remains unanswered is where do they go from here? I am sure Myers is still being shopped, possibly Hedges as well. Again, I have a bad feeling Myers just hated playing for Andy and will be rejuvenated one way or another just by not playing for him. So will it be with us or not? Basically I think adding another outfielder determines if Myers is moved...same with starting rotation. I think that we still see us add to both areas just the quality/caliber of each position is TBD based on Myers.
Naylor and Cordero to begin the season in AAA for sure. I think Miller surprises everyone and makes the team out of Spring Training. Gore a legit possibility as well if he kills it in spring training. However, I do think they give him a month or so in Amarillo to limit innings a tad and get a little more prep/possibly work with Balsley and Hoffman. Time will tell. Whether you agree with/like the moves, the action is exciting once again from the new ownership group and Preller & co.
