I can see that when luxury tax is an issue but that is not the Padres.
If pushed out until 2023, then Myers is only going to cost $1M, and Hosmer drops from $21 to $13M, saving SD about $29M. So if I were SD, I would push it out to 2023 in a hearbeat.
That was my view if the choice is fully the Padres. I guess the flexibility (if it is a lump not installments) allows the Padres to look at the each year vs their other options to make the call. If they trade Hosmer in 2021 they might want to insert the bonus to keep 2023 open for a new FA signing (or a major extension for Tatis and Paddack with their bonus).

Signing Dickerson to platoon with Renfroe works too.
I can't imagine adding Grisham will be the only add to the offense.
Flies in the face of the "heads will roll" comment.
The only way to improve the team enough....without adding more offense....would be to add Cole or Strasburg.
If that isn't happening(10%?),then adding more offense is on the way.
2b/LF/RF?
Haniger and Mancini are RHH who hit RHP better than Renfroe.
Not sure either will be on the market ... Seattle would be selling way low after 2019 on Haniger ... BALT would be asking for a ransom on a quality bat that has control and low cost.
Bottom line is that do expect Preller to explore all options to upgrade the OF. Probably some names we are not even considering.
Of course.....brain cramp.
I do know this waiting and wondering is getting too me.
I know we’re adding more offense.....and/or a TOR starter still.
But who?
WHO?
WHEN?
lol

Quote from dusty on November 30, 2019, 4:55 pmI really am hoping the Padres can save as much as they can on Myers' contract, but I have this real pit in my stomach that Wil just really did not want to play for Green as evident in the video of him bagging on the guy with Asuaje and he will have a really stupid bounce-back year. Worst-case scenario is we eat a lot of money to move him and then he just blows up

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 2, 2019, 7:55 amWas wondering if our signing of Pomeranz may have in the smallest way also been to keep him from the Dodgers?
Surely the Dodgers don't go into 2020 without improving their bullpen.....again?
With Will Smith gone and now Pomeranz a Padre....they are losing opportunities to add.
I see where the Brewers are listening to offers for Josh Hader.....do the Dodgers go there?

I'm thinking he is not offered a contract.
Don't really envision any non-tenders from the Padres ... none of he arbitration players have unwieldy projections.
Perdomo is only projected at $1MM ... still has a minor league option ... 3 control years .... only 26. He has had his flashes of effectiveness in the pen so still can be a depth piece as an experienced swing guy between the ML - AAA. May also have some value as a trade chip given the need for RP (more the 2nd or 3rd piece in a deal).
So no reason to non-tender him now .... no immediate need for the roster slot and just string him along as the next moves evolve. Plus, for that last RP slot (or the AAA call-up slot) no sure I have all that much confidence in the next up at this point ... maybe after ST.

They could and some other teams could be calling. Hader has 4 control years and projected at only $4.5MM (Super 2). Given the FA prices of Smith and Pomeranz ... he should cost a lot in talent.
Not sure what MILW is trying to do while trying to contend. Moving Davies for a less effective Lauer (just to get an upside bet on Urias) then potentially dealing an elite LHRP in Hader for ????. Neither Davies not Hader appear to be payroll issues. Walking a high risk line.

I'm thinking he is not offered a contract.
I'd be surprised if he's non-tendered. Only 500K > a minimum guy & can be optioned. Good depth at least. Could give him a take it or leave it deal for slightly less, but honestly, Perdomo's agent might tell him to "leave it" to be able to choose his destination more as a FA, if Pads did that.
