Quote from MrPadre19 on November 29, 2019, 10:12 amMancini...Benintendi....Haniger are about the only LH hitting outfielders I'd be interested in that could be available.
Signing Dickerson to platoon with Renfroe works too.
I can't imagine adding Grisham will be the only add to the offense.
Flies in the face of the "heads will roll" comment.
The only way to improve the team enough....without adding more offense....would be to add Cole or Strasburg.
If that isn't happening(10%?),then adding more offense is on the way.

The more I think about it, I do not see even Wheeler being that much of a difference maker for SD especially for the dollars he will want, and I dont think we have the dollars to chase Stras or Cole. We should be able to have a very good rotation with Richards, Paddock, Lamet, Davies, Luchessi, Quantrill, and still have on the way Gore, Patino, Nix, Morejon, and Nick Vicious.
I would still look into signing Dickerson and finding a platoon partner for Renfroe (maybe Cordero) and then use a combo of those guys and mid level prospects to clear Myers salary.
Agree on passing on big money on a TOR SP this winter ... always risks but a solid SP staff with great near term upside for a TOR arm in Gore and Patino to me is the better gamble and, in turn, focus those dollars on offensive upgrades ... not a strong suit at the ML level or near term prospects. Looking for someone elite. Since I see 2020 as a season of improvement but maybe not playoffs may be more contained in jumping on some moves.
I find Myers a tricky issue ... sort of walking the line of WILLING to trade him (and his contract) but not going to overpay (in term of prospects) just to create the payroll room unless I have a real need for that space. Good chance can use those same prospects to generate some relatively low cost upgrades to fill out the 26 man roster or even get some higher ceiling prospects for the future.
Also, if they stay away from a pricy TOR arm .. they will have more payroll space of both upgrades in the OF and 2B (Villar?).

Haniger and Mancini are RHH who hit RHP better than Renfroe.
Not sure either will be on the market ... Seattle would be selling way low after 2019 on Haniger ... BALT would be asking for a ransom on a quality bat that has control and low cost.
Bottom line is that do expect Preller to explore all options to upgrade the OF. Probably some names we are not even considering.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 29, 2019, 10:26 amThe names that have been bandied about are Betts and Lindor and to a lesser degree Kris Bryant and Devers, depending on what Boston is going to do with Betts. Don't see the Padres in on any of these without first dumping Myers salary. Then, significant prospects would have to flow that may possibly include Patino and Campusano.
I do agree that if we want a real thumper in the lineup who is consistently good, we don't have anyone coming up in the near future that has that kind of combination of power and average. Trammell and Abrams will be good, but don't expect 30 HRs from either of them.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 29, 2019, 10:30 amI agree, I dont think any of the three are at all readily available. As you mentioned, Haniger with the busted nut and down year make SEA want to hold onto him, Mancini is relatively cheap and more a 1b/DH than OFer especially in the NL West parks, and I think the only way you get Benintendi out of BOS is if you take all the salary of either Price, Sale, or Eovaldi.

If you are correct and internally Fowler has told Preller, you can have 2020 to get to just above .500 and chasing the 2nd WC spot all the way through the end of the season, and Fowler will consider that a successful season.
In that scenario I can see AJP approaching ANA for Brandon Marsh. Maybe a one for one where either Hedges or Luchessi or Quantrill is traded for Marsh.
Then you could maybe live with an OF of Myers in LF, Margot/Grisham in CF, and Renfroe/Marsh in RF and then see if a change of manager helps Myers. Then Myers either builds up his trade value or is worth the money we are paying him.
NOTE** I also think that AJP will be looking to MIN towards possibly getting either Kirilloff or Larnach. That will probably require a larger package than the one for Marsh.

More?.....Sure.
Better?.....Not me.
But if it was a definite that Strasburg would be ours that could make the difference. So it matters more “who” we are saving the money for.
I’m not losing Gore/Abrams/Patino/Trammell/Edwards just for the luxury of losing Myers.
“If” Strasburg has already put pen to paper and the only caveat is we have to move Myers......I could handle losing Myers and any number of guys not listed.
But to lose any of these guys just to save money and then not end up with Cole or Strasburg....or Rendon, doesn’t do anything for me.
- I must again agree with Mr. P. Teams are built through the draft, with prospects. Atlanta already had Smoltz, Glavine and Avery before they signed Maddux. We have one guy currently who may turn out to be in that class of pitcher: Paddack. Gore is close to a sure thing, but not a true sure thing because he is a prospect. Patino is pretty close to a sure thing. What if Gore gets hurt or doesn't turn out? We will sure wish we had Patino. You don't trade likely or even possible stars to get rid of money. You hold on to them like your life depends on it, because that are what great teams are made from.
- Atlanta ruled mlb with teams built on great pitching. The had Smoltz, Glavine and Avery homegrown before they traded for Maddux. We have our Avery in Chris Paddack. Glavine is knocking on the door and his name is Gore. Do we trade our Smoltz for salary relief? Where would the Braves have been if they had done that? Let's grow our big three first, THEN trade for our Maddux. Myers salary is nothing compared to the six years of essentially free possibly premium pitching we may get from Patino.
I’d argue we currently have four arms Paddack, Lamet, Gore and Patino that could reach ace status.
Agree... but it takes years in MLB to do so. These 4 make on paper an extremely strong core of a rotation, but Gore could be in 2nd year of MLB, Patino essentialy a rookie in 2021. Do not remember any deep playoff teams with rotation not anchored by a more veteran guy.

Completely agree Brian! That’s why I was in favor of pursuing Thor and I wouldn’t mind if the Padres splurged on acquiring an ace. I’d like to see a top dog penciled in ahead of Paddack and Lamet this year. Acquiring that stud is just way easier said than done. I have a feeling the FA starter market is going wild. My dream is the Padres let FA starters come off the board and end up as one of the few teams in the G. Cole sweepstakes. I’m sure that’s just a pipe dream, but if Myers contract in unloaded I don’t think it’s out of the question. More realistically the FA starter market goes wild and AJP elects to go the trade route for upgrades to the offense and rotation. I think AJP will line up at least two more big trades and this roster will be looking playoff ready by the time he’s done working this offseason.

Quote from fenn68 on November 30, 2019, 1:16 pmRosenthal reported today the Pomeranz’ signing bonus of $8MM is “deferred” and will be paid between 11/20 and 11/23 (unclear as to in a lump or in installments) and if the payment schedule been agreed to or up for negotiation.
So, for this winter, the Padres have maybe and additional $8MM of cash to deploy since the bonus is not due.
Anyone know the logic surrounding constructing a contract with a bonus element yet deferring the bonus ... rather than just shaping the cash flow? I can see that when luxury tax is an issue but that is not the Padres.
IF the bonus is pushed out until 2023 ... it is post-Myers and easier to swallow. I guess the Padres stay on the hook for the bonus even if Pomeranz gets traded down the road which may be easier with a lower base salary.
Padres have more cash now ... still easier to deal in the future
Pomeranz plays along to get 4 year deal at $34MM

If pushed out until 2023, then Myers is only going to cost $1M, and Hosmer drops from $21 to $13M, saving SD about $29M. So if I were SD, I would push it out to 2023 in a hearbeat.
