Seattle has 3 pieces I would find intriguing In Haniger + Dee Gordon 2B and Marco Ginzalez (200ip in 19 inning eater..

Wonder if we can match up somehow for 1 or more of these guys while shipping Myers north (remeber Seattle inquired about Leake for Myers last off-season)..

Padres would have to add a ton of prospects to go with Myers heading to Seattle ... that $61MM owed to him is not something Seattle is looking to take on at this point.

Haniger and Gonzalez are low cost / longer control pieces ... not much incentive to deal either one.

Gordon only has one more year (at about $13MM) ... plus another year at about the same amount IF he gets 600 PA. Given his recent injury history and Seattle’s ability to manage his PA (he had around 400 in 2019) he likely will go FA after 2020.

More likely they would trade Gordon for prospects just to clear that $13MM. Gordon past is a bit more that his recent performance ... basically has dropped to a below average hitter (wRC+) and maybe a 1 WAR type. Padres would be better off going after Villar.

So, a deal of Myers to Seattle would still follow the same model as with Detroit, et al and require including prospects. Side: if the Padres took 3B Seager may be different but no one wants him at his contract plus he is a 3B only.

======

My original thought was something like Myers + Joey + France + Morejon + Bolanos + Arias + Thompson and Nix

And it would be more like $48 mil since we are taking on 13 mil

Gordons OBP concerns me.

The last thing we need is more players who can't break the .300 OBP plateau.

I'm all in on Haniger though.....but that doesn't necessarily have to be contingent on them taking Myers.

They don't need C or 1b...jurys still out on SS and a couple OF spots.

Their DH is like Schwarber....good power,no Avg/high K rate.

So we may "have" to take Gordon to get any kind of Haniger deal done or make them an offer they can't refuse based

around pitching and maybe Renfroe/Naylor/Miller?

I am using Dee as an offset ($13 mil) I mean he is a singles hitter with speed (below .700 OPS) he woukd bat 9th and be a bridge player for 2021..  Joey for Marco is almost a wash with Marco being more of an eater and slightly > Haniger (who AJP has asked about before) is the real prize here .. And why along with Myers I am willing to fill a boat with prospects to get him and get rid of him ..Haniger and Myers that is

If such trade were to happen

Vs RHP

1. Tatis Jr

2. Grisham CF

3. Machado 3B

4. Haniger RF

5. Hosmer 1B

6. Mejia C

7. Naylor/Renfroe

8. P

9. Dee Gordon 2B

Ive been trying to find scouting reports and evaluations of Grisham and his defense. Im still not sure if he is a CFer or LFer? All the reports agree he can play all 3, but the arm is weak for RF. And some say he doesnt get great reads and makes up for that with his speed. And Im not saying that he can not improve on his reads. But where do most on here think he is going to play. At first, I thought CF, but know I am am wondering if he is Dickerson and going to be our LFer?

I would guess in 2020 he is penciled in as the CF (with Margot) given the current mix. Remember the Padres used Myers in CF ... so defense is not the primary issue. Doubt he will be "that bad" to get bumped off just due to defense. Note that Cordero ... even if healthy and hitting ... also has a reputation of questionable defense.

Now down the road ... if Grisham develops as a hitter ... see him in LF with potentially Trammell in CF in 2021 or J.Rosario in CF in 2022 plus maybe Abrams is converted and in CF in 2022-23.

So Fenn, you are envisioning additional moves for the OF going forward still? Would I be correct in thinking that you now feel that CF is taken care of between Margot and Grisham? Leaving LF and a platoon partner for Renfroe to be addressed.

With Grisham and Davies in the fold taking care of the a LHH option for CF and that veteran quality SP addition ... basically filling out the "length" of the 26 man roster, maybe Preller just needs to focus on impact adds for an offensive minded corner OF and a TOR arm.

Looking at the realistic trade market and the FA market .... trade focus should be aggressive toward the corner OF since no real "impact" FA. Have to come with measurable upgrade from Myers, Renfroe, Naylor ... any could be used as part of a deal.

The TOR arm is more likely via FA .... might be able to trade for a good SP but he will not be true TOR so why if sitting with Paddack, Lamet, Davies, Richard then sort among Lucchesi, Quantrill, Gore, Patino, Bolanos. Price to trade probably exceed the upgrade in SP.

Preller certainly has already reached out to all the other teams on the comfort with deals for his targets and agents for FA ... now formulates a game plan. This is where what we as fans see as a reasonable move, Preller may already know is a no go and moves we don't see are more viable. The real wild card is the payroll ceiling for the Padres and the salary cost of that impact corner (if available) and / or that TOR SP (if he can be signed). Until those two spot upgrades are clear to Preller ... may not want to go with a higher cost 2B upgrade.

With a healthy Richards and Lamet, plus the add of Davies over Lauer, I personally dont think SD really needs to be after another SP to be honest. The more I think about it, I do not see even Wheeler being that much of a difference maker for SD especially for the dollars he will want, and I dont think we have the dollars to chase Stras or Cole. We should be able to have a very good rotation with Richards, Paddock, Lamet, Davies, Luchessi, Quantrill, and still have on the way Gore, Patino, Nix, Morejon, and Nick Vicious.

I would still look into signing Dickerson and finding a platoon partner for Renfroe (maybe Cordero) and then use a combo of those guys and mid level prospects to clear Myers salary.

That should be their objective .... a major impact bat. If that can't get done ... maybe a Dickerson FA type signing.

Padres had one of the worst OF offenses in MLB ... really not contender quality ... and only Grisham has been added but he is still unproven. I have no issue with dealing any of Myers, Renfroe, or Naylor if in the end they have a better corner OF. Under the right circumstance, deal Margot and gamble on Grisham in CF for the "right" upgrade.

Don't know who is truly on the market but can speculate on players who would be significant offensive upgrades ... but they will cost in terms of players / prospects. The more prospect needed for that upgrade the fewer prospects are available to move Myers if that is needed to make payroll space to get that TOR arm in FA.

Conforto (NYM) would be a good upgrade as a full-time corner. Build a deal starting with Margot, Lucchesi, RP?

Marte (PITT) for a corner or CF. Build a deal around Renfroe and prospects?

Mancini (BALT) for a bad fielding corner but offense. Renfroe or Naylor and prospects?

Others may be available. Note that Myers is not of use in making these deals but Renfroe may have the better trade value given control / cost and the belief if out of SD may display even more effective power.
