While all 3, Paddock, Gore, and Patino all have #1 or #2 guy written all over them. It would make me nervous, both in amount of innings and quality of innings. I understand your point in a year of experience in the ML is great, but only if they are mentally strong enough to handle the potential pitfalls of getting shellacked as a 20 year old.

And I think that I would rather have an OF of Dickerson. Marte, Conforto. Although have read multiple times that neither Marte or Conforto can handle CF anymore. For the prospects, I think I would pass on Merrifield, probably better at 2B than the OF anyway.

Many on here believe that with a full year of Urias and Mejia, that we have at least given ourselves a chance to fix the holes in the offense that we had at the start of last season at 2B and C. Leaving mainly the OF to upgrade. Lets not talk about Myers at this time.

In a perfect world, you would have 8 players that can hit LH and RH picthing, but we have to live with what we have. So if we count 5 OFers, I think we that we have 2/5s of the OF in Margot and Renfroe. If that is the case, then we have CF and RF against LHP. So we still need a CF and RF that can hit RHP, and a LF that can hit both. Many on here believe that Dickerson is the answer in LF. Many hope that Cordero is the answer in RF. Dickerson only costs money, and Cordero is already ours, just needs to stay healthy. Leaving only a CFer that can hit RHP left to find. I went back to MLBTR and looked at FA CFers.

Of the available CFers, the following are LH, Akiyama, Dyson, Gardner, Jay, Tilson, and Hamilton (SH). Akiayama is an unknown, Dyson hits Lefties better than Righties, Gardner is not an option (back to NYY), and can Jay still play CF, and Hamilton is .250/.307 against RHP. Whats the story with Tilson?

Of the available CFers, the following are RH, but have a good track record against RHP. NONE!!

So it looks like the only chance that we have to upgrade CF against RHP is either Margot gets better or Akiyama can handle ML pitching.

I’d prefer they keep Gore and Patino together in AA and keep their innings limited thru the first few months of the season.

That way if we need them late in the season for “meaningful games in September” due to injury or poor performance at the ML level....they would still have innings left.

Maybe even for the playoffs.

I know they’re rookies and counting on them for playoffs is expecting a lot but if they’re needed then they would obviously be better than what we would have.

Then in 2021 they would be ready from day 1.

In a perfect world that is....maybe not in a “Padre” world.

I agree. Let the pitchers develop the right way. They only had a few starts in AA, and Gore at least had a 4.50 ERA. Let's wait until they are able to dominate AA on a regular basis before we move them up. We have lots of starters. I expect significant improvement from Quantrill at the very least. Likely some from Richards and Lamet as well. Let's not forget that Richards has always been a #1 with some of the best "stuff" in baseball. Our pitching is very well off. We do not need to be over aggressive with our prospects. What we need is offense.

Especially if we are gonna add a TOR starter.

While I would love to see Gore start the season ala Tatis....if he won’t be able to finish the season due to innings limits  it makes less sense IMO.

Getting a Strasburg just pushes everyone down a notch and makes it all better. Richards; who was a #1 in ANA, becomes the 2. And so on, and so on. Agree MrP and J135, give Gore and Patino time to get ready. We have the arms for this year.

And then, 2021......Wow. Strasburg, Paddock, Gore, Lamet, Patino. With Luchessi and Quantrill lying in the wait in the bullpen for long relief or spot starts.

Betts/Hicks/Marte/Inciarte/Eaton/Reddick/Doc Pederson/Malek Smith/ JBJ  are all rumored to be available at the moment.. via tradee.. just saying... and thats just off the top of my head

Was reading down the thread with intention mentioning Smith. One good year though. Hate to say it but JBJ makes too much sense in a platoon with Margot. Then hopefully Trammell is ready in 2021.

JBJ is a plus fielder who cannot hit. We already have one of those in CF. JBJ's problems aren't just with left-handers either. If we are going to use prospects for trades, let's just save them for one or two trades for very good players. JBJ doesn't really help us much. People saying Akiyama is just a 4th OF have no idea. Nobody does until he actually takes the field here. I personally find it hard to believe that one of the best players in Japan can be no more than a replacement here. He may not be a star, but he should be able to play.

Not JBJ's agent or anything. Just saying it feels like a move this FO will make.

I'd be a little more circumspect when referring to the McDaniel comment on Akiyama.  A good source on prospects, which is what Akiyama is vis-a-vis MLB.
