Vegas would take this off the board for betting.

What would be the Padres payroll with Strasburg - Rendon - Machado - Hosmer - Myers - Kinsler - Richards - (and the dead money for Hector Oliver’s) all under guaranteed contracts? Between $150-160MM for seven active players ... the add all the arb guys that are not just discarded ... plus the rest of the roster fill ... pushing $180-190MM?

I still am not sure about hitting $150MM ...

IF you could convince Strasburg and Rendon to take $25M each the first year, about $145M between for the 8 of them. Might as well call BOS and take on Betts and his salary and push the luxury tax at $205±.

If the pursuit of Stras and Rendon doesn’t work out, I guess I’ll settle for G. Cole and Betts. 😄

Never in my lifetime did I think my Padres would land a star in their prime on a mega deal. Now they are being talked about for  big name after big name the last 3 years. This ownership group is certainly making it fun to be a fan of the Padres. Now get us two more stars and bring that first title to San Diego.

It's fun to think about and to dream....and you would think signing Machado would make this seem "more" possible...but it just as well could make it "less".

I will be astonished if we add another $200+ mil contract.

We gave out the biggest free agent contract in history(at the time) just last year. This after a lifetime of being a 4A club that traded every star we had for trash before they got expensive for us. Now we expect them to reset the market every year? We are not suddenly going to turn into the Yankees. I am still incredibly happy to have Machado! We have an ACE and his name is Paddack. We will have another one by the end of next year with Gore. So we don't TRULY contend until 2021-2022. At least we have a chance to make a World Series competitive team! Just a reasonably priced outfielder or two. Can't we be happy with that? If we cannot be happy when ownership goes out of the way to make us happy, they will stop trying.

This is not my idea at all, so dont slay the messenger. Connor Grossman on Sports Illustrated, gives his crazy off season prediction that SD signs both Strasburg and Rendon! I would imagine in this crazy scenario that he imagines Rendon at 3B, Machado at SS, and Tatis at 2B. I cant imagine that SD could or would want almost $87M alone tied up into 4 INFs.

I would have to think in this scenario Rendon would play 2b.

Which he played as recently as 2015.

Otherwise you are moving Tatis to a position he's never played before....and Machado to one he may not be as good at as he once was(I know he's still very capable).

But...Rendon is a free agent so I would have to think if we were to sign him(.001% chance btw) he would have to be OK with his position.

So if he wanted 3b and 3b only....I guess that could happen.

.001%

So you're saying there's a chance!

Really not far fetched at all.. Rendon +.Stras .. Minus Myers + Kinsler + Perdomo + Hedges ...maybe only + $20  mil in payroll.. Think of it as a trade.. Cause we probably would have to part with Q + Arias + Weathers + Potts for someone to take 100% of Myers.. Payroll would be what $153 mil after signing a Dickerson type OF... Lets Go!

The website thescore.com (not familiar with the site at all) is predicting the Padres sign Stras and trade for Thor. A staff of Stras/Thor/Paddack/Richards/Lamet, Joey or Cal would scare the crap out of the NL. A rotation like that would definitely make the Padres contenders in 2020.

I used to love Thor because of his stuff and his performance history. Now I think he is on the decline, overpriced, spoiled, full of himself, immature and toxic. Please don't get him!

As bad as our offense was last season I can’t imagine adding 2 top starters.

One  yes.....but we need to add offense.

We have the arms or have them close.

Gore and Patino are two of the top pitching prospect in the minors ... both have appeared in AA and by all accounts are “close” to the ML ... both are under control for 6 ML season at a low cost. Now consider:

Gore pitched 104 inning in 2019 ... Patino pitched 94.2 innings in 2019 ... then look back at Paddack who pitched 90 innings in 2018, made the ML as a starter in 2019, and pitched 140.2 innings through some smart innings management (that worked out pretty well). Should we be looking harder at one (or both) being on the opening day roster as starters? Maybe already be better than Lucchesi and Lauer ... and maybe Lamet and Richards. Why wait on them .... get their 1 year done in 2020 and have them running full bore in 2021 in a real year of contention.

Take that route (and gamble) ... makes Lucchesi, Lauer, Quantrill, and maybe Lamet up for trades. Given the need for any kind of pitching (Preller calls pitching “gold”) ... maybe better trade chips for impact ML bats than an array of minor league prospects.

Mix and match the “excess” SP and the “excess” existing OF and might come up with an OF of Merrifield - Marte - Conforto which might just help the offensive output.
