Strasburg at $165/5 ($33MM AAV) would seem about right but could see $180/6 from Washington ($30MM AAV) since WASH really likes him and works well with Boras (who always seems to get top dollar) plus all reports are that Strasburg does like WASH.

At Strasburg’s age getting that 6th year (even at a lower AAV) creates a better total contact value and a form of insurance against declining performance.

You guys pushing for Dickerson must be tickled to see MLBTR predict him signing with SD.

I forgot he won a GG. I would for sure sign him at 2 yrs $7.5 AAV.

They have Hamels going to ATL for $30 mil over 2 years. I'd match that.

What do you think of Kyle Gibson? Wonder if he is in line for an Arietta type run given his pedigree, production when healthy and history.

As you my at have guessed, I don't see Cole or Stras signing in SD. I want AJP to target 2nd tier SP. Top end in both FA and trade too dear for now. Maybe next off season.

To add more grist to the board discussion, how about Chirinos on a two year deal to pair with Mejia? Deal Hedges.

2 years at $15M, sounds good for SD. Wouldnt touch the Hamels deal, let ATL waste their money. Kyle Gibson, I would rather take Odorizzi instead. Chirinos I would pass, I'll take Lucroy if we trade Hedges, his offense is better.

Saw where MLBTR made their annual FA predictions. Interesting fodder for sure. they have WAS resigning both Rendon and Stras. I dont see WAS having that kind of money. They do have Stras at 6/180, and Rendon at 7/235. So who do they pick, that will be the key to landing Stras in SD.

The power arm on Odorizzi is fun. Just don't like injury history. Hamels offers what the Pads have paid for before (xp Hosmer).

Lucroy was -1 WAR last year. Chirinos 3.8.

Not a big fan of WAR, so dont really care about that stat between the two. I dont think that Chirinos wants to be a back up quite yet, and I think that Lucroy realizes that is his role now. The two of them have about the same BA last year, Chirinos did a better OBP. Lucroy is probably cheaper as well.

Julio Teheran was not tendered an offer from Atlanta......29 yrs old and pitched 170 + innings. Solid middle to back of rotation guy.

The 2020 team is so many pieces away from being a legit contender but starting pitching is always a great place to start....if the price was right he brings some game and could always be flipped. Atlanta didn't want to pay him the 10-11 million due for next year but could he be had for less and enjoy SoCal instead of Hotlanta. Never can have enough Pitching.

As expected the MLBTradeRumors are quoting the Padres as going to pursue Steven Strasburg.

Well he has checked off a World Series and WS MVP so maybe he would jump to SD (he still lives here as I recall) if the contract is right. With Boras as the agent (I think) this may take a while to get settled especially if WASH makes a legit pursuit of him v Rendon.  I would guess a minimum of $150MM/5 years ($30MM AAV) maybe a  bit more.

Given Boras’ creative contracts with WASH ... could see either a back loaded deal or a lot of deferred money (which may make the total higher to compensate for the cash flow lag). The cash flow (to both the Padres and Strasburg will be key).

Have to work that with the other Padres who may not be going away soon while considering there will be a point when the Padres will have to deal with major arbitration decisions (then extensions) for the likes of Tatis, Paddack, et al. So look to the cash flow being a factor in the contract structure.

If they go into 2020 with Strasburg - Paddack - Lamet - Richards - plus one of Lucchesi, Lauer, Quantrill ... set-up two trade chips for offense. Then Richards is out in 2021 and probably Lucchesi or Lamet become trade candidates to make room for Gore and Patino ... maybe both and Morejon arrives.

Preller was quoted that pitchers are like gold ... everyone wants and needs them. Could either get some quality for the current roster OF or do what Preller seems to do best and add some blue chip prospects for the “next wave”.

Still expect a Strasburg signing would given more impetus to cull the roster of other high cost pieces ... but given Boras’ style of waiting .... Padres need to make those moves before the call on Strasburg.

Strasburg sold his house in Santee this year. I'm sure if he comes back he will be wanting to get a bigger one anyway, probably on the beach. I truly hate Boras and how he draws everything out! He is going to end up screwing multiple teams who are forced to put their plans on hold while waiting for Cole, Rendon and Strasburg. Oh well, Strasburg would be worth it. Like you said fenn, he would free up a lot of our young, tradeable pitching. 3 young, cheap starting pitchers with years of control? They and our 2nd tier prospects should be able to get us a LOT of offense on the trade market. Boras just ruins everything. We cannot sign guys like Akiyama and Dickerson(who I would really like to get) if we are going to need the money for Strasburg. Conversely, if we start trading our young pitching for offense and then don't end up with Strasburg, we could end up short on pitching. I know, that is exactly what Boras wants: to force teams into a corner so we are desperate and have to overpay.  Good luck AJ! Fingers crossed you make the right choices! I do not envy you your job.

For the life of me I don't understand why Strasburg would sell his house in Santee and make a move up to Newport Beach. I mean really....what does Newport Beach have that Santee doesn't ?

On a serious note.....unless this team is ONE guy away from taking the NL West from the Dodgers ( which they aren't ) you DO NOT do these stupid 3 or 4 or 5 for 1 trades for one guy who is nothing more than a rental for a year when it isn't going to make a difference and you sure as heck DO NOT give up any of your young arms that project as starters for the next 4-8 years. Strasburg at the top of that rotation would be awesome...expensive but awesome.

Develop this young pitching staff and then enjoy watching them own the NL West and beyond for years to come.

I am sure the house in Santee was his starter house. That is where he grew up. From what I had read he sold that one because he had decided to move his family to Washington full time.

I absolutely think that we should hold on to our top prospects, especially pitching. Our infield is set for the future on offense and defense. Our outfield is a different story.  We have only 1 true difference making outfielder in the minors who is close to coming up and that is Trammell. He can be our future in center or left. I think we have to hope that Renfroe can keep his first half production from this year going for the whole year next year if he is going to be part of our future. Even so he will need some platoon help from a lefthander. That means we still need 1 outfielder who is productive on offense going forward. That is really the only major hole in our offense with nobody on hand to fill it. That should be the only thing we should even think about trading any prospects for, and that only if absolutely needed. None of our top 6 and ideally not Morejon or Baez either. I think just signing Dickerson like mlbtraderumors says and maybe someone like Teheran will get us where we need to go for now. Keep the prospects to take over if and when any of our young guys don't turn out like we hoped.

Did also note Stammen (at #35) is placed with the METS ... $10MM/2. Like him but not at his age and that price.

However Dickerson (#25, $15MM/2) and Akiyama (#45, $6/2) seem the right targets. So combined adding $10.5MM/year in AAV. Hopefully one (or both) can secure full time roles rather than platoon options. Their profiles suggest they may fit with Tingler’s comments of getting more like WASH/HOU with better bat to ball skills and hitting to all fields ... basically more “old school” hitting.

Does suggest that some of the incumbents get traded ... likely Renfroe or Myers as corner OF ... Margot stays since rely on Akiyama yet for a full season. Martini gets DFA to make room for one.
