- I am warming up to the idea of a platoon of JBJ (redsox) and Margot in CF for 2020.. JBJ would be really easy to get from Red Sox as they try to shed Payroll.. He is a .750 career OPS guy vs RHP and thats about 100 points higher than Margots vs RHP splits.. Margot is like 140 points higher vs LHP than JBJ.. Together they could easily generate 5 WAR from CF by platooning and playing their normal excellent defense combined.. At $15 or so mil combined not a bad platoon tandem

Quote from TatisJr on November 3, 2019, 12:59 pmI’d be on board with Puig being added. I’m really interested to see what he gets offered in FA. I think Puigs free agency is a very interesting storyline this offseason.

Dickerson is the only guy I see filling an immediate need. Is AJP really going to hand him a big money, multi year deal? I just don’t see it. Naylor, Cordero, TT are 3 young potential LH sticks that will have their opportunities soon and I think 2 of the Margot, Renfroe, Myers RH OFs will be returning. I could see AJP doing a Bolanos, Reyes, France for Mazara type deal. Mazara isn’t the most exciting, but could be a change of scenery candidate and he’s still only 24 with light tower power potential from the left side. I think we are underestimating just how poor the production from second base and catcher was last season. Mejia getting the ABs instead of Hedges and production from Urias at second will improve this offense.
Puig destroys RHP .. Calhoun is a good fielder with some OBP skills and pop.. Dickerson and Shogo (JPN) fit this team like a glove.. Grandall could come in here and elevate C position to elite offensive levels.. There are even runors out that we could ssacrifice D at ONE COF and go after Castellanos or JDM believe it or nor (Mlbrumors)... If we want an offensive uograde or 2 there are plenty of FA available
I do not think Grandal would be the best use of our limited financial flexibility. Lots of teams want him. We would have to outbid them. We have tons of catchers already. Why spend on Grandal if we already have Mejia? I think we MAY have enough money to get a 2nd level FA hitter like Dickerson and a 2nd level FA pitcher like Odorizzi or Hamels. If we want a true ACE we will probably have to overpay in a trade for one. If we do manage to sign a Strasburg, I don't see us spending any money on any offensive upgrades. We aren't going to add $30 million to our payroll every year. We got the top free agent last year. I am sure ownership was hoping that would be all that was needed to put us into the playoffs. IF they decide to spend big again this offseason, you can be sure it will be the last time. That means that any big pickups we make this year is going to be our base from here on out. We need to be sure we get the RIGHT people, not just whoever is available.

Quote from fenn68 on November 3, 2019, 1:27 pmAs expected the MLBTradeRumors are quoting the Padres as going to pursue Steven Strasburg.
Well he has checked off a World Series and WS MVP so maybe he would jump to SD (he still lives here as I recall) if the contract is right. With Boras as the agent (I think) this may take a while to get settled especially if WASH makes a legit pursuit of him v Rendon. I would guess a minimum of $150MM/5 years ($30MM AAV) maybe a bit more.
Given Boras’ creative contracts with WASH ... could see either a back loaded deal or a lot of deferred money (which may make the total higher to compensate for the cash flow lag). The cash flow (to both the Padres and Strasburg will be key).
Have to work that with the other Padres who may not be going away soon while considering there will be a point when the Padres will have to deal with major arbitration decisions (then extensions) for the likes of Tatis, Paddack, et al. So look to the cash flow being a factor in the contract structure.
If they go into 2020 with Strasburg - Paddack - Lamet - Richards - plus one of Lucchesi, Lauer, Quantrill ... set-up two trade chips for offense. Then Richards is out in 2021 and probably Lucchesi or Lamet become trade candidates to make room for Gore and Patino ... maybe both and Morejon arrives.
Preller was quoted that pitchers are like gold ... everyone wants and needs them. Could either get some quality for the current roster OF or do what Preller seems to do best and add some blue chip prospects for the “next wave”.
Still expect a Strasburg signing would given more impetus to cull the roster of other high cost pieces ... but given Boras’ style of waiting .... Padres need to make those moves before the call on Strasburg.

Strasburg sold his house in Santee this year. I'm sure if he comes back he will be wanting to get a bigger one anyway, probably on the beach. I truly hate Boras and how he draws everything out! He is going to end up screwing multiple teams who are forced to put their plans on hold while waiting for Cole, Rendon and Strasburg. Oh well, Strasburg would be worth it. Like you said fenn, he would free up a lot of our young, tradeable pitching. 3 young, cheap starting pitchers with years of control? They and our 2nd tier prospects should be able to get us a LOT of offense on the trade market. Boras just ruins everything. We cannot sign guys like Akiyama and Dickerson(who I would really like to get) if we are going to need the money for Strasburg. Conversely, if we start trading our young pitching for offense and then don't end up with Strasburg, we could end up short on pitching. I know, that is exactly what Boras wants: to force teams into a corner so we are desperate and have to overpay. Good luck AJ! Fingers crossed you make the right choices! I do not envy you your job.

Quote from fenn68 on November 4, 2019, 4:17 pmFinal 4 to the 40 man:
Mejias-Breen cleared waivers and assigned to EP
Edwards cleared waivers and declared as a FA
Nix DFA ... I guess in waiver limbo
Yardley DFA ... I guess in waiver limbo
A minor surprise is that Martini survived ... at least his cut.
====
Next round by the 20th if they protect some prospects from Rule 5.
====
I could see a Jankowski type deal for Nix and / or Yardley ... or just lost on waivers since pitching is always a need.

I heard he closed a deal for a mansion on Newport Beach... so he is right here- 45 minute drive for Home games-- maybe rent a Condo by Petco (or buy one) for April-October
otherwise a nice stretched Rolls with a driver, pretty cool way to get to Petco

Quote from JasonE135 on November 4, 2019, 4:33 pmSo what does everybody think? Will the Padres be willing to go to 7 years $238 million? I can maybe see it as the FINAL big monetary move to bring us into contention. We will still lose Myers and Hosmers contracts before Tatis and Paddack go to free agency, and 7 years from now (Strasburg's possible contract) should run out just in time for time for our next wave of free agents (Gore, Patino, Trammell).

Hell NO....
Strasburg is NOT getting 7 yrs.. by anyone... He be lucky to get 5.. 4+1 or if need be someone gives in and goes 6.. as far as $$ Stras (age and all) Maxes out at 5/165.. with a Mutual $20-$25 mil option --$5 mil buyout type 6th... $238? no way... Cole will get 6+1 (because he is 2 yrs younger) or 7 yrs.. Probably 7/231 or so...
