I’m hoping that moving him to the 6th inning and limiting his workload the next 2 years will bring him back to his 2018 productivity.
Plus this forces another move and as was stated....may force a tough decision on Guerra.
I’m just not sure what kind of trade could be in the works...unless BP arms are just a “piece” of a larger deal.
I just don’t see any deal involving BP arms we would want to lose that would bring back anything of value?
A lot of pitchers gave up more HRs than normal last year, so no big deal. I agree, he will probably be in lesser important games/innings, like the 6th inning when behind or maybe up big.
And I would imagine that if a BP arm is included in a trade, that it would be the final piece of a larger package.
I agree with Fenn, I would look at DFA'ing Marg prior to giving up on Guerra, to free up a roster spot.

Quote from fenn68 on January 4, 2020, 5:02 pmI guess we will see how the league sets the rules surrounding the 13 man pitcher limit and the “two way” player pitcher / position player. Padres have two options that could be used two way ... Guerra and Cronenworth and with a 26 man roster on a team that may not platoon that much ... could set up some interesting roster selections.
Hosmer - Tatis - Machado - Myers - Pham will likely play 90+% of the time ... that is 5 spots. Mejia / Hedges split the catching duties ... that is 2 more. Grisham / Margot split CF and provide one back-up OF ... that is 2 more. So have to cover 2B and three bench positions. At least 2 of the bench options will get very little playing time .. makes keeping a two way as the 26 man rationale if he can be used to pitch even under some limiting rules.
If a “starter” goes out ... maybe better a call-up is better than someone who has been wasting on the bench.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 4, 2020, 6:55 pmGuys like Guerra could at least give you a PH option in extra inning games and Cronenworth could give you an inning or two in same scenario or in blowouts.

Quote from fenn68 on January 5, 2020, 5:41 amSort of under the radar but the Padres have really added to their Payroll this winter ...now over $150MM. Consider:
$8.6MM ... Pham
$6.0MM ... Pomeranz (plus $2MM bonus)
$5.7MM ... Profar
$5.0MM... Davies
$4.0MM ... Stammen
$2.5MM ... Johnson
So over $30MM of adds while only dropping a couple of million by dealing Renfroe. Padres are now in the top half (last I looked) of MLB payrolls. Considering I did not expect them to breach $130MM ... pleasantly surprised.
=====
In 2021 the Padres will drop about the same amount with FA Yates, Profar, Richards and dead money dropping off for Kinsler, Olivera, Loup, and Warren.
So IF $150MM is the new payroll limit (target) ... room next winter for some strategic adds and/or the extension of Yates. Much will depend on how this ML roster does in 2020 along with the development of the prospects.
Sort of under the radar but the Padres have really added to their Payroll this winter ...now over $150MM. Consider:
$8.6MM ... Pham
$6.0MM ... Pomeranz (plus $2MM bonus)
$5.7MM ... Profar
$5.0MM... Davies
$4.0MM ... Stammen
$2.5MM ... Johnson

This move is surprising.
While you can’t have too much pitching I am of the belief some of our young/cheap arms could do the same job as Stammen.

Yeah Stammen killed us in high leverage situations. His ERA does not reflect the impact of the runs he allowed. His best asset was willingness to take the ball. We probably dont need that anymore. I mean at times he looked decent and he has shown it before, just seems like a lot of money to spend for a 6th inning guy that could have been cheaply replaced by many of our arms.

Fowler admitted on 97.3 months ago that BP arms are volatile and that older arms are especially vulnerable to injury. Is anybody else at least concerned that we spent so much money on veteran arm's when it was at least debatable as to whether so much payroll capital needed to be expended for that purpose?

Stammen was wayyyyy over worked in 2019..he won't in 2020.... And they have a ton of young arms to back up their investment

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 5, 2020, 9:08 amBut that’s the point.
We have all these young arms...signing a 36 year old who is pretty obviously declining f0r $9 mil seems a waste of resources to me.
Hopefully he gives us two more good years....just seems doubtful to me.

Your math skews a little high. Assuming Stammen @ 4 MM no signing bonus in 2020, and still counting Kinsler's likely reduced or at least "stretched" 3.75 MM in 2020, I have 2020 payroll incl 8 minimum guys @ 600K each at: $145 MM.
Pomeranz' '20 salary is only 4 MM + I added 2 MM of bonus (assumed split evenly over 4 yrs) = 6 MM total. Did you back out Renfroe's salary?
But point taken... even if Kinsler were "$0", Pads are definitely > 140 MM total payroll right now. Could shave tiny amounts by trading Perdomo, extending Yates with 2020 slightly < projected arb amount. Other than that can only make a dent trading a "medium" asset like Hedges, or of course Myers + ?
