Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 4, 2020, 2:05 pmQuote from onlypads on January 4, 2020, 1:34 pmBednar, Guerra, Morejon, Cal, Bolanos, Baez...will be interesting where and how these pieces fit in 2020
Guerra is out of options so he is either on the 26 or Traded-- doubt they DFA him (too valuable)...
1- Closer Yates
2- Pomz
3- Stanmen
4- Strahm
5- Munoz
6- Johnson
7- Castillo
8- GUERRA
Thats it -- Can only carry 13 P on the 26 and with 5 SP that means 8 BP...
With Perdomo/Bednar/Trey/Bolanos/Q/Baez/Morejon (in AAA) our El Paso BP may be > than 1/2 the Bullpens in the Majors

Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 4, 2020, 2:09 pmWho gets DFA'd from the 40 to make room? I am of the thinking AJP has a trade agreed on that will send 2 or more 40 man roster pieces for 1 40 man roster piece in the works to create 1 open (or more) spots on the 40 -- When can Espinoza be transfer to the 60 Day Injured List to create an opening (now, New Year? or when ST starts?}

Quote from WindsorUK on January 4, 2020, 2:11 pmQuote from BoosterSD on January 4, 2020, 1:05 pmI just think this signing is the foreshadowing of an upcoming trade. Way too many bullpen guys for us not to make a deal of some sort.
Hell, I thought the Pen was full when we signed Johnson!
I have no idea how AJ plans on sorting this out other than moving a few guys in a trade.
I don't want guys like Baez, Quantril, Reyes, Castillo, Bednar spending more time in the minors just so we can carry a load of older so so veterans.
Don't quite understand the way we're spending money this off season.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 4, 2020, 2:30 pmI lost a lot of confidence in Stammen last season.
This move is surprising.
While you can’t have too much pitching I am of the belief some of our young/cheap arms could do the same job as Stammen.
I get that he’s experienced and a workhorse....but he was a victim of the long ball last year and gave up quite a few leads.
I’m hoping that moving him to the 6th inning and limiting his workload the next 2 years will bring him back to his 2018 productivity.
Plus this forces another move and as was stated....may force a tough decision on Guerra.
I’m just not sure what kind of trade could be in the works...unless BP arms are just a “piece” of a larger deal.
I just don’t see any deal involving BP arms we would want to lose that would bring back anything of value?

I think Espinosa can go to the 60 day IL late in ST ... more of a move if they want to add a non-roster player.
If a trade is not imminent ... may DFA call would be Margevicius who I never really understood as a roster add in 2019 and still not much upside.

Quote from fenn68 on January 4, 2020, 2:44 pmGiven the pen adds of Pomeranz (31), Stammen (35), and Johnson (28) to go with “veterans” Yates, Strahm, and (maybe Perdomo) ... looks as though the win in 2020 is leading them to veteran options and minimize risk with the unproven kids. All three signed multi-year deals ... that surprised me more than the signings.
If it works ... brilliant. If it does not work some nice trade deadline chips to move. The “kids” get to develop out of the high leverage situations in the ML either as earlier innings options our on the shuttle between AAA and the ML.
Might also signal that non-RP upgrades are not really there to be had at any common sense price.

It is always advantageous to have too many people as opposed to not or barely enough. All of those guys outside of Guerra can go to the minors. Morejon isn’t ready yet. He, Baez and Bolanos all need more development as starters. Even Quantrill could possibly use some more. Anyway, now instead of being relied upon they can continue to develop in the minor leagues. That is a win. Bednar(and possibly Perdomo I am hoping) can be stashed in the AAA BP for call up as needed.
Guys WILL get injured. In both the rotation and the BP. It happens every year. Now we filled both with quality players and effective replacements ready to in the minors.
I don’t see the need for us to trade any of these quality pieces. If we need another roster spot that is a separate issue. Perhaps some team has been offering a spec who doesn’t require a roster spot for one who does. We don’t know. Our BP is in a great place right now with all of these extra arms. Let’s not be so quick to trade them.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 4, 2020, 3:00 pmAlso have to remember relief pitchers have to face a minimum of 3 batters now.
So there won’t be any guys going 25-30 inning in a season.
Need guys who can get RH and LH batters out cause they won’t just be going in to get one guy out any more.

Well said fenn68. I absolutely agree. Overbuilding a BP seems to be a recent method of roster construction that has worked well. We might as well do it when we can.

Quote from WindsorUK on January 4, 2020, 3:13 pmAnother positive is that it keeps another possible quality reliever off the Duds.
Their pen was certainly a weak point last year and they've done ZERO to improve it. Pomeranz, Johnson, and Stammen all would have been upgrades for them.
I guess I'm glad they found their way south.
