Next (if anything) for 2021? $7MM is a big budget hit but if they were considering the likes of Tanaka / Sugano in the lower teens .... Profar / Musgrove puts them in the same range ... but is that all?

Now considering we have Kim/Cronenworth to cover the entire INF .... Profar who can be the emergency fill in the INF (while OF primary) ... Mateo becomes more at risk as an INF/OF who can run but not hit.

Unless the Padres think Profar can handle CF in short spurts (not sure Mateo can either ... question on O'Grady) .... would adding a low cost legit CF option (see Maybin) make sense vs Mateo? Maybe a net +$1MM?

I would think that Marisnik maybe a better option over Maybin. 5 years younger, still a true CFer, and with his numbers, has got to realize that he is now a platoon player at best. Plus, has some playoff experience with HOU.

While Lamet only throws a fastball slider, in effect their 4 different pitches. He throws both a two seam and four seam extremely well (completely different action I don’t get why they’re not considered throwing two pitches) and he throws a hard biting sliding and a bit of a slower one that acts more like a slurve.

So two “pitches” but in effect the batter sees for different actions, straight, horizontal, diagonal, and inside run.

Lamet can be an ace type for years if he can stay healthy

GREAT breakdown JCP!  Makes me feel WAY better about Lamet if he even has 3 pitches.   Throws the hard slider so often, don't remember much of the "slurve".   Over a full season maybe up it to 5-10% use?

Padres To Re-Sign Jurickson Profar

The Padres have agreed to re-sign infielder/outfielder Jurickson Profar on a three-year, $21MM contract, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan (via Twitter).

=====================================================

Love him or not .... he is the Padres for 3 years .... super-utility - DH - LF.

Not a huge fan of this deal at this time. I think its way too much money for a 40 day window of barely above average hitting.

With Kim signed for 4 years, and Profar for 3 years, I wonder if this leads to a trade of Cro for a controllable OFer. Im not sure how MIN is set for INF prospects, maybe a Cronenworth for Kiriloff or Fenns favorite target, Marsh from ANA?

I doubt at this point the Padres will deal for a "prospect" and equally unlikely they deal Cronenworth as they build for a 2021 run.

Side: really don't think Cronenworth has much trade value even after last season ... generally 2B are not considered mega trade chips. Now if some team (and I doubt it) sees Cronenworth as their SS of the future ... maybe a better return but not in the Kiriloff zone. Also, a Kiriloff / Marsh type is very unlikely to get traded unless it is for a major ML SP under control.

Padres are probably pretty happy with either Kim or Cronenworth backing up the entire INF to provide insurance against injury / rests. Profar is more a N-2 disaster protection in the INF. Have to think Profar as OF first, DH as needed, PH. The 3 year deal gives some longer term coverage post Pham and when the DH arrives. Less pressure to make signings / trades to fill both those slots (still may want to but not from behind the eight ball).

With a 162 game (6 month) season .... depth is important especially with nothing of ML quality ready in AAA/AA.

This makes me happy.

This guy was a big part of the chemistry of last years team and really improves the bench along with Kim.
I would guess we’re probably done now other than maybe a couple minor league deals offered just before ST.

Although I would be extremely happy if we re-signed Rosenthal!

Details still coming out on Profar's deal.  EXTREMELY player friendly:   2 player opt outs after each of 1st 2 years?!

Lets Profar walk (or renegotiate) if he breaks through, leaves Pads "on hook" if he regresses.

I'm really happy he's back, but he's NOT an everyday LF.   Let's not remake the club & trade Cronenworth just yet....

Probably smaller chance of an opt out after the first season as he will be in  more of a utility role.

But he could be our everyday left fielder in 22’ and  with a good season he could be gone.....or resigned at even more $.

Either way....I’m glad to have him as it’s only money(and someone else’s in fact).

Probably true ... but at what cost give the minimal use either would get over the season. Maybin at this stage is more a $1.5MM type ... Marisnik more of a CF who could start somewhere (a few teams need CF) so likely much more costly.

It is utterly insane that we literally have 6? MLB capable SS's:  Tatis, Machado, Jake, Kim, Profar, Mateo

.... when we didn't have ONE for years!!

Boy the annual opt outs are the rage but in a sense the team may be happy to concede an opt out (or renegotiate) ... that would mean he had a very very productive season and help win the 2021 World Series! Guessing the Padres view is that the "downside" performance with Profar is not that much less than the $7MM.

I think this also is some protection early against the DH in the. NL in 2021. Whether it is Kim DH (and Profar backing everywhere) or Profar the DH with Kim backing the INF ... Padres have some flexibility for strategy. Moreover, given the MLB thinking these days .... of "resting" regulars as the DH ... a combo of Kim / Profar filling back-up keeps a good bats in the line-up.
