Hader is a PROVEN elite RP (although some may be wary of his gradual decline based on how MILW has used him).

This is the biggest concern about any trade involving Hader. MILW has rode him like a rented mule. You would think that arm has to be held together with duct tape and bailing wire. While the idea of Hader is intriguing, and we know that Preller has had interest, does it really pay off?

As with any move it depends on the cost.

We just have to believe Preller knows what he's doing so if he "does" make a deal he must be confident it's at the right cost.

Of course he could even overpay if he truly believes he's the one missing piece to a championship....but I doubt it would be by that much.

With Mil as playoff contenders it would probably "have" to be an overpay.Or they would have to really want what's being offered more or to also save some $$.

Preller has done so many amazing things recently there are those that actually think he is trying to expand this deal to include Yelich!

lol...I guess it's his own fault for making Padre fans believe that with AJ Preller "anything" is possible!

It appears that Danny Santana is healthy and looking to sign a deal. He is a speedy SH INF/OF. I am really hoping that SD chases and gets him. I think he is a much better bench option over both O'Grady and especially Mateo. I would feel more comfortable with him as the back up CFer than the current options.

Looks like Santana signed with Boston.

I don't know him but it looks like he had a really good rookie campaign then fell off a cliff?

Dude has tools. Hope he finds success with the Sox.

Like I said, I think he would have made a real nice 26th man on this roster. Has a fair amount of time in CF, and is a switch hitter. Oh well.

A couple years ago he would have been big get for us.

I still like him and would have had no issue if we signed him.....but he would just be a fringe acquisition at this point on “this” team.

Our needs are few and far between...

Which is a great thing for Padre fans!

Think a big factor in his opting for BOST (assuming others were interested) is the Red Sox presumed starting OF: Cordero - Verdugo - Renfroe. He has to see a clear shot at making the ML roster ... getting significant playing time and maybe even starting. Building a resume for next winter’s FA run.

Mr. P. and Fenn I agree, there is no way he is coming to SD and getting a starting job. I just think he is a bench upgrade over Mateo. And yes, our needs are finally finishing touch pieces instead of glaring holes and hoping that Johnny Retread Veteran has a bounce back year.

Checked Cot's contracts.  Some interesting info:

  • No update on timing/if Tatis' Signing Bonus is "split".  Cot's has details of much smaller bonuses like Profar's, so they should eventually emerge.  Tatis has full no trade protection in his contract UNTIL he hits 10 year mark as a Padre, at which point he gets it as a "10 & 5" player.  But, if he did consent to a trade down the road he has partial (13 teams) no trade clause > 2028.  Bottom line: He can’t be traded as a Padre; unless he wants to be.  If he ever did get traded he would have partial no trade clause ’29 on with the new team (i.e. would give up full no trade if he ever left Pads).
  • No update on Kim's annual salaries.  My guess is his contract is likely backloaded to help “absorb” the 5.5MM+ posting fee paid.  Something like: 4/6/8/10, not straight 7 MM/yr.
  • Melancon's entire 2 MM Max incentives are ALL tied to Games Finished.  He would have to at least be sharing Closing duties to earn any of it.
  • Kela’s contract is interesting.  1)  Earns $200K if in Minors.  He has 2 options left.  Strongly implies he might either start off in Minors due to arm issues last year (slow roll into MLB like Strahm?) and/or get optioned at some point simply b/c he’s one of the few guys who can be.  2)  Very specific Pads club option for only 800K in ’22 IF he has TJ Surgery.  Strongly implies it’s a serious risk, as this would only make sense if it happened early enough in season for him to be available to pitch next season.  3)  800K in Games PLAYED incentives AND 1.5 MM in Games Finished incentives.  The games finished incentive is “mutually exclusive” to Melancon’s: they can’t both close.  If he stayed healthy & in MLB all year, probably makes 2 MM = Melancon's '21 salary before incentives.  If as full time closer, he could reach 3.5 MM total.
  • Darvish & Snell also have “mutually exclusive” Cy Young vote escalators in their existing contracts; they can’t both win it!  Darvish’s salary in ’22 & ’23 can rise based on getting CY votes.  Only Snell’s ’23 salary can rise.
  • Finally, Brian O’Grady got 650K with a 300K Minors salary.  Significantly > most guys with < 1 year MLB service time.  Only Paddack & maybe Tim Hill likely to get > 600K in pre-arb salary, though Nola, Gresham, & Cronenworth may be close.  Pads definitely wanted him.

The issue with chasing a guy like Danny Santana, is it is a marginal upgrade at best over what we have now.  With no DH,  baring an injury, its hard to see the Padres carry a 5th OF unless its... Mateo for the late inning speed, or O'Grady if you are worried about the defense.  Santana would get MAYBE a handful of starts over the entire season.  Not worth it.
